The American Film Musical and the Place(Less)Ness of Entertainment: Cabaret’S “International Sensation” and American Identity in Crisis
humanities Article The American Film Musical and the Place(less)ness of Entertainment: Cabaret’s “International Sensation” and American Identity in Crisis Florian Zitzelsberger English and American Literary Studies, Universität Passau, 94032 Passau, Germany; fl[email protected] Received: 20 March 2019; Accepted: 14 May 2019; Published: 19 May 2019 Abstract: This article looks at cosmopolitanism in the American film musical through the lens of the genre’s self-reflexivity. By incorporating musical numbers into its narrative, the musical mirrors the entertainment industry mise en abyme, and establishes an intrinsic link to America through the act of (cultural) performance. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the chronotope and its recent application to the genre of the musical, I read the implicitly spatial backstage/stage duality overlaying narrative and number—the musical’s dual registers—as a means of challenging representations of Americanness, nationhood, and belonging. The incongruities arising from the segmentation into dual registers, realms complying with their own rules, destabilize the narrative structure of the musical and, as such, put the semantic differences between narrative and number into critical focus. A close reading of the 1972 film Cabaret, whose narrative is set in 1931 Berlin, shows that the cosmopolitanism of the American film musical lies in this juxtaposition of non-American and American (at least connotatively) spaces and the self-reflexive interweaving of their associated registers and narrative levels. If metalepsis designates the transgression of (onto)logically separate syntactic units of film, then it also symbolically constitutes a transgression and rejection of national boundaries. In the case of Cabaret, such incongruities and transgressions eventually undermine the notion of a stable American identity, exposing the American Dream as an illusion produced by the inherent heteronormativity of the entertainment industry. -

Attachment Anxiety: Parenting Culture, Adolescence and the Family Film in the US
Abstract Attachment anxiety: parenting culture, adolescence and the family film in the US Many authors have noted a connection between notions of childhood and understandings of parenting; however, debates have focused only on adults and their behaviour. This article interrogates the child’s position in contemporary parenting culture using the Hollywood family film to explore how the cultural constructions of childhood and parenting may influence one another. The article analyses the reception of the family film of the 1990s and its representations of families and children to note a cultural response to the previous decade’s “discovery” of the pre-teen demographic. This response highlighted the incompatibility of young adolescence and attachment parenting, constructing a new childhood ideal which returned the child to assumptions of vulnerability. Keywords: Parenting culture, attachment, childhood, adolescence, Hollywood, family film Over the past three decades, a number of authors have examined western parenting culture. Among the most influential is Sharon Hays, who identified a dominant ideology of “intensive mothering” and explained it as the result of a series of social developments beginning with “the earliest discovery of childhood innocence in Western Europe” (1996Hays, S. (1996). The cultural contradictions of motherhood. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press., p. 22). The relationship between changes in notions of childhood and changes in understandings of parenting has been noted by several other authors, who linked contemporary parenting culture with “the way society regards children. Babies and infants are seen as both intensely vulnerable and highly impressionable – above all to parental influence” (Furedi, 2001Furedi, F. (2001). Paranoid parenting: Abandon your Anxieties and be a good parent. -

Jordana Lauren Metz And They Lived Happily Ever After: The Effects of Cultural Myths and Romantic Idealizations on Committed Relationships ABSTRACT This study explored the impact of idealized relationships, present in our media and culture, on committed relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that relationships are impacted by real and idealized relationship discrepancies. In addition, this research provided an initial assessment of the coping mechanisms utilized by partners as problem solving responses to the discrepancies. Twelve participants, self-identified as in a committed relationship with a partner and living together for over one year, participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with questions focusing on how the participants’ relationships fit and do not fit into idealized notions of relationships, how their partnership is affected by this relationship discrepancy and the ways that they cope and respond to these effects. Findings indicated that many participants experienced feelings of discomfort, questioning and doubt in their relationship due to the prevalence of idealized relationships. -

SEASON CONTENT ART PRODUCTIONS & ADDITIONAL THEATRE EVENTS TICKETING & BOX OFFICE INFORMATION FILM & TELEVISION WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 SEASON! It’s July 2019 and I have just arrived in Tucson after a cross-country drive to begin an exciting adventure as the Director of the School of Theatre, Film & Television. As I write, our stages and rehearsal halls are quiet; our screening rooms and editing suites are dark; our working shops and classrooms are restocked and ready. Soon they will thrum with the creative life of a next generation of artists, young souls we faculty and staff are so privileged to guide for a few years on their journey to big lives of artistry – no matter their chosen profession. Soon, I will meet many of you and come to know the University of Arizona and Tucson as my home. For me it’s an exciting time of new visions, new relationships, and great work waiting to be done. Here, in the pages of this brochure, we invite Andy Belser, Director you, our treasured audiences, to witness our students as they meet you on stage, School of Theatre, Film and Television screen and page with their emerging skills of artistry and scholarship. At times of transition, I go to poetry. I offer this touch of Pablo Neruda’s “La Poesia” as a reminder for our students, and for us all, to begin each day and year wide open and ready for surprise. Anything can happen. and I wrote the first bare line, bare, without substance, pure foolishness, pure wisdom of one who knows nothing, and suddenly I saw the heavens unfastened and open. -
