The brisk pace and the crosswinds splinter the peloton into four echelons. Less than 10 km into the race, 17 riders are up front, with two chasing pelotons behind them. Shortly after, Ganna leads the first chasing group to merge at the front. At km 13 of racing, the gap is 45”. At km 20 of racing, the gap is down to 23”. The runner-up of last year’s edition, Pogacar, is safely in the front group (approx. 60 riders). The peloton bunches up at km 27, and just eleven riders are left behind (1’ gap). The chasers eventually bridge across to the main peloton with 140 kilometres out. Forty-five kilometres into the race, the compact peloton is riding hard. Average speed after one hour of racing: 51.900 km/h. At the -120 km marker, the peloton is toiling against the side winds and is stringing out. With three kilometres remaining to the intermediate sprint, there is no sign of an early break. Within sight of the IS marker, Deceuninck Quickstep are in prime position. Intermediate Sprint (Habshan Camp – km 64.4) Almeida claims the stage ahead of Goldstein, Cattaneo and Mørkøv. Seventy kilometres into the race, the peloton has splintered again under the strong crosswinds, with two distinct chasing groups separated by 25” and 50”, respectively. -

Further, I thank Ove Nicolaisen for help with statistical analysis. i Abstract The major aim of this study was to investigate the timing of four Calanus species main phenological events and to establish their ecological niche in an area where they co-occur. The recently unveiled area of co-occurrence of Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and C. helgolandicus located in a Norwegian fjord, the Skjerstadfjord (northern Norway), represents an ideal opportunity to study the limits of each species’ ecological niche. For this purpose, I investigated the Calanus species composition and vertical distribution over approximately one year, from April 2017 to March 2018, using multinet sampling. As Calanus spp. are morphologically very similar, species composition was determined by the use of molecular markers to identify individual to species level. -

PRESS RELEASE| For immediate release Van Avermaet, Gerrans, Matthews, Wellens and Degenkolb headline an impressive field at the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal 2018 Montréal, August 23, 2018 – Now in their ninth editions, the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Québec et Montréal (GPCQM) are once again asserting their impressive pedigree on the UCI WorldTour calendar, the top tier of international road cycling. The challenging courses, deep field of competitors with a large number of titles won, suspense-filled racing, quality of organization, and the friendly hospitality of Québec have made these races choice stops on the tour that all riders aspire to win. With just two weeks to go before race weekend, the 18 UCI WorldTeams and three wild-card teams (Israel Cycling Academy, Rally Cycling and Team Canada) have announced which riders they are sending to the races, and once again this year each has entered a squad of first-rate competitors well suited to the spectacular parcours in Québec City (sept. 7) and Montréal (sept. 9). The peloton of 147 riders, representing 28 countries, includes skilled road warriors like Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), the reigning Olympic Champion, who also held the Yellow Jersey for eight days at this year’s Tour de France, won the Montréal GP in 2016, and has been on the podium in Québec City four times since 2012. “I love these two races; every year they’re among my main end-of-season challenges,” says the Classics specialist from Belgium, who will face tough opposition from several riders who are well versed in the traps of both city courses. -

st 21 February 2018 THE STAGE REPORT Stage 1 Al Fahim km 189 START: Albanese, Caruso, Trusov, Planet and Skujins race clear since the very beginning. The peloton lets them go: at km Cavendish (Ddd) abandons the race as a consequence of a crash during the transfer. At km 10, t -Step Floors and Mitchelton-Scott riders take relays at the front of the peloton. At km 42, the gap is 3 32 . Average speed after one hour of racing: 48.400 km/h. At km 50, the peloton is down the road. Intermediate Sprint (Liwa km 55.0) Trusov claims the intermediate sprint ahead of Albanese, Caruso, Skujins and Planet; the peloton is lagging behind. At km 61, the gap is down to at at Average speed after two hours of racing: 44.150 km/h. At km 97, the breakaway riders are up the road. Rolland has a puncture but manages to get back into the peloton. At km 109, the gap is at Average speed after three hours: 42.100 km/h. Intermediate Sprint (Liwa km 129.7) Skujins claims the intermediate sprint ahead of Albanese, Trusov, Caruso and Planet; the peloton is down the road. At km 136, the gap is down to . At first, Albanese and Trusov lose ground to the breakaway, but eventually manage to get back into the leading group. Four riders remain at the front, as Skujins sits up. At km 147, the four front riders are leading by over Skujins, and by over the peloton (which eventually reels him in). At km 152, the four breakaway riders are leading by just over the peloton; at km 158, the gap is down to . -
Sporting Legends: Axel Merckx
SPORTING LEGENDS: AXEL MERCKX SPORT: CYCLING COMPETITIVE ERA: 1993 - 2007 Axel Merckx (born August 8, 1972 in Uccle, Belgium), the son of the legendary Eddy Merckx, was a professional road bicycle racer since November 1993. In 1995 he joined Team Motorola as a team-mate of the young Lance Armstrong. Despite several strong years of racing, including winning the Belgian national championship in 2000, Axel is probably still more famous for being the son of five-time Tour de France champion Eddy Merckx than for any of his cycling exploits. Despite being overshadowed by his father's formidable record, Axel has repeatedly vowed to make his mark by accomplishing feats Eddy never managed - including a Tour de France stage win at the top of Alpe d'Huez and a win in the Paris-Tours World Cup race - but has yet to make good on these promises. He has a large number of fans in Belgium, and would undoubtedly engender a great deal more goodwill if he were ever to achieve either of those elusive wins. One place where he has overshadowed his father is at the Olympic Games. A good climber, Axel is probably at his best in the mid-altitude mountain ranges, notably the Massif Central and the Ardennes. His favorite race, and the one he feels best in, is Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He is also always aiming for a Tour de France stage win, and can often be found in long breaks. His work is inspired by the ever-changing landscape along the Norwegian coast, and his dramatic depictions of coastal landscapes have caused him to be described as a contemporary Romantic painter. The Norwegian Sea was painted during a cruise with the research vessel G.O. Sars in 2004. Ørnulf Opdahl accompanied a team of 60 researchers from 13 countries on a two-month expedition to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge as part of the MAR-ECO project. The purpose of the expedition was to enhance understanding of the distribution and ecology of marine animal communities. In previous centuries, before the invention of photography, artists often accompanied scientifi c expeditions to document their scientifi c fi ndings. Marine Current Energy Conversion Resource and Technology MÅRTEN GRABBE UURIE 309-09L ISSN 0349-8352 Division of Electricity Department of Engineering Sciences Uppsala, December 2008 Abstract Research in the area of energy conversion from marine currents has been car- ried out at the Division of Electricity for several years. The focus has been to develop a simple and robust system for converting the kinetic energy in freely flowing water to electricity. The concept is based on a vertical axis turbine di- rectly coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator that is designed to match the characteristics of the resource. During this thesis work a pro- totype of such a variable speed generator, rated at 5 kW at 10 rpm, has been constructed to validate previous finite element simulations. Experiments show that the generator is well balanced and that there is reasonable agreement be- tween measurements and corresponding simulations, both at the nominal op- erating point and at variable speed and variable load operation from 2–16 rpm. It is shown that the generator can accommodate operation at fixed tip speed ratio with different fixed pitch vertical axis turbines in current velocities of 0.5–2.5 m/s. The generator has also been tested under diode rectifier opera- tion where it has been interconnected with a second generator on a common DC-bus similar to how several units could be connected in offshore operation. The conditions for marine current energy conversion in Norway have been investigated based on available data in pilot books and published literature.
