HARTMAN RNEST GEORGE MERRITT, emeritus professor of physics at ECornell University and long-time member of that de- partment and personification of American physics, died June 5, 1948, in Ithaca, New York, after a short illness. He was born April 28, 1865, (two weeks after Lincoln’s assassina- tion) in Indianapolis. As a youngster he already showed an inclination toward his adult vocations of editor and scien- tist. By the age of eight or so, in Indiana no less, he had founded and edited two journals, Sea Breeze, and its succes- sor, The Mountain Echo, which he also printed and bound; and he had obtained a modest telescope which he housed in his small observatory. The Indianapolis Journal reported on “the boy astronomer (whose) eager study of the stars may some day make him famous.” In high school Merritt showed a talent for mathematics, winning a small prize. After one year at Purdue he went to Cornell’s engineering school, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. When the mathematical and as- tronomical inclinations disappeared is not clear. -

Among fungal infections (mycoses) zygomycoses are exceptionally severe with mortality rate exceeding 50%. Immunocompromised hosts, transplant recipients, diabetic patients with uncontrolled keto-acidosis, high iron serum levels are at risk. Zygomycota are capable of infecting hosts immune to other filamentous fungi. The infection follows often a progressive pattern, with angioinvasion and metastases. Moreover, current antifungal therapy has often an unfavorable outcome. Zygomycota are resistant to some of the routinely used antifungals among them azoles (except posaconazole) and echinocandins. The typical treatment consists of surgical debridement of the infected tissues accompanied with amphotericin B administration. The latter has strong nephrotoxic side effects which make it not suitable for prophylaxis. Delayed administration of amphotericin and excision of mycelium containing tissues worsens survival prognoses. More than 30 species of Zygomycota are involved in human infections, among them Mucorales are the most abundant. -

Read Full License Page 1/38 Abstract Our earlier paper had established the fact that new soil fungi known as Cunninghamella blakesleeana is potent enough to produce lovastatin signicantly. At present, there are no reports on the media optimization for the lovastatin production. Hence, the objective is to optimize the fermentation conditions for lovastatin production by Cunninghamella blakesleeana under Solid State fermentation (SSF) condition through screening the critical factors by one factor at a time and then, optimize the factors selected from screening using statistical approaches. SSF was carried using the pure culture of Cunninghamella blakesleeana KP780148.1 with wheat bran as substrate. Initial screening was performed for physical parameters, carbon sources and nitrogen sources and then optimized the selected parameters through PBD and BBD. Screening result indicated the optimum values of the analysed parameter for the maximal production of lovastatin by Cunninghamella blakesleeana were selected. Out of the nine factors MgSO4, (NH4)2SO4, pH and Incubation period were found to inuence the lovastatin production signicantly after PBD. -

SINNOTT N THE DEATH OF Albert Francis Blakeslee on November 16, 1954, I American botany lost one of its most notable leaders, a man re- markable not only for the high quality of his scientific attainments but also for the breadth of his interests and his friendly concern for the people around him. As a geneticist, he recognized the impor- tance of heredity in determining the character of an organism, but as one concerned for many years in the cultivation of plants, he also knew the necessity of good environment. He himself was fortunate in both these things, since he came from superior human stock and was brought up in surroundings conducive to the full development of his capacities. Blakeslee was born in Geneseo, New York, on November 9, 1874, in the home of his maternal grandfather. His father, Francis Durbin Blakeslee, was a Methodist minister and educator. Besides serving a number of churches, he had been principal of the East Greenwich (Rhode Island) Academy and of the Casenovia (New York) Semi- nary. His father's father was also a lifelong Methodist minister. Blakeslee's mother, Augusta Miranda Hubbard, was a remarkable woman, highly gifted and with a brilliant mind, and had a very great influence on the character of her son. -

This thesis describes the in vitro production of drug metabolites using fungi of the Cunninghamella species. The metabolites were characterized with mainly liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using ion-trap and quadrupole-time-of-flight instruments. A fungal in vitro model has several advantages e.g., it is easily up-scaled and ethical problems associated with animal-based models are avoided. The metabolism of bupivacaine and the selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) S1, S4 and S24 by the fungi Cunninghamella elegans and Cunninghamella blakesleeana was investigated. The detected metabolites were compared with those formed in vitro and in vivo by human and horse and most phase I metabolites formed by mammals were also formed by the fungi. -
