RACHEL HOLLIDAY

Our mother, Rachel Holliday sadly died on Monday 22 June at the age of 93 peacefully at Hereford Hospital.

After leaving Hornby 3 years ago she went to live with her son Scott in Hereford where she spent her remaining years being well looked after.

She enjoyed her many years in Hornby after moving from Farleton after the death of her husband and was very appreciative of the friend- liness of the villagers that made her so welcome.

DO YOU HAVE SOME LAND SUITABLE FOR BEES?

I'll be soon moving to the area, and I keep bees!! Unfortunately, I can’t keep them in my garden as my garden will not be suitable.

I'm looking for a small plot/piece of land where they can be of no nuisance to people or animals, and they won’t bother them either. I will require easy to access.

I'm looking to move them wintertime, not straight away.

In return for some honey of course! If you have such a place unused, then please contact:

Another Success Thanks to Kath, Bibby's and the weather gods for giving us another very enjoyable trip in July through some very beautiful countryside to Kirkby Stephen, Barnard Castle and Windermere. A good time was had by all. And so, to the next one:

Kath's Korner: The Hornby Trippers' next outing is to Boundary Mill in , and we'll have fish and chips at Banny's Restaurant whilst we're there. We'll stop at Skipton on the way. It's a 10am start, picking up at the usual places, and back around 6pm.

Government recommendation is to continue wearing facemasks inside buildings and on buses, so we'll have to adhere to that. I'll check with Bibby's how many we can take and will be taking bookings by phone (015242 21845 or 07597774681) from the end of July. I will be in Hornby Institute to collect money on the 3rd and 4th of August from 10am to 12 midday - Regards, Kath.

Looking Forward? We will be having a committee meeting at the be- ginning of August. Among other things, we will be discussing the pro- posed planning of post-pandemic events for the daytime rather than during evenings. So please let me (Annie) know, as soon as possible, whether you think that is a good idea or not by ringing 015242 21100 (please leave a message if I don't answer your call). Thank you.

We really do want to know what YOU think, so that we can plan events that most members will want to attend.

We are still hoping to hold our AGM in September, followed by a social event. Of course, it depends on how the pandemic goes, so details will be published only in next month's newsletters. In the meantime, take care, stay safe and enjoy the summer.

We are pleased to see that the bridge is being repaired and are also grateful for the generous weekly payments that the council have offered for parking and using the car park. 10

HORNBY SCHOOLS (PART 2) (Andrew White)

The school known as ‘Admiral Tatham’s School’ survived until 1872 when work began on a much larger building, now the Nursery, which opened in 1874. The school was a result of the Education Act of 1870, which extended education to all children. It was paid for by John Fos- ter, owner of the Castle and a very rich man, whose wealth was de- rived from Black Dyke Mills at Queensbury, Halifax, famous for its brass band.

As built the school had but one classroom, two cloakrooms and a house for the Headteacher. Classes were held back-to-back in the main room, with a junior teacher and sometimes pupil teachers. Later, in 1894, another classroom was added for infants and the school took children from the age of five to fourteen, although children could leave before then if they had achieved the right grades. In 1931 the older children, over eleven, were sent on to the school at Burton in Lons- dale.

During the Second World War evacuee children from Salford were housed at what is now Lunesdale Court (built as the Workhouse) and shared the school with the village children.

We know quite a lot about this school because the logbooks survive from 1900 onwards and give a vivid view of the curriculum, weather, national and local events, and a wide variety of accidents on the way to school and in the playground. Some of the entries have appeared in Contact.

There were relatively few headteachers at this school, several of them having long careers here.

Joseph S Birch 1873-83 John Simpson 1883-1883 Edward Illidge 1883-1914 F E Longbottom 1914-1944 F S Parkinson 1944-1961 Gordon Bullivant 1961-

Contd. 11

When Gordon Bullivant took over in 1961 there was already a plan to build a new school in the village on land just to the north of the Royal Oak, and this was done by 1963, becoming the present Primary School, although now much added to. The school was opened on 20th January 1963 and the old school was acquired by Lamb’s Garage as a car showroom. The new school had only two classrooms and was de- signed to cater for 50 children. The hall and the two classrooms could be divided into three by screens or used for indoor activities such as PE at full size. Subsequently an extra classroom has been added as numbers increased. One of the school’s great advantages is the more than one acre of playing field surrounding it.

The Headteachers of this school have included;

Gordon Bullivant Alan Webster Gordon Park Brian Wood Lindsey Kennedy Ann Blackwell Nadine Scott Kerry Stafford-Roberts

The end of year finance audit document was completed and agreed. The audit paperwork and supporting evidence will now be sent to the external auditors.

The Financial Risk Assessment document and the New Standing Orders were reviewed and agreed.

Four planning applications were discussed. There were no objections to two of the applications (21/00751/FUL – 3 Ingleborough View and 21/00145/FUL – West View). The Parish council noted that 21/00627/ FUL – 17 Station Road was a renewal of the original application previ- ously agreed by Planning. However, the Parish Council still stand by their original objections and concerns. The fourth application, 21/00792/Ful – Haweswater Aqueduct, is believed to still be in the very early stages of the application. The Parish Council are very keen to en- sure they are kept informed, particularly when a more detailed applica- tion is submitted.

The future costs involved in the maintenance of the playground was discussed. The Parish Council feel very lucky that the Lengthsman can maintain the playground at a considerably reduced cost to what has previously been quoted by external companies. When possible, the Parish Council will approach the Lengthsman to maintain what he is able, using external companies as a last resort. It was noted that future maintenance costs of the playground will need to be taken into consid- eration at the next precept.

More detailed minutes will be available after they have been approved at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday 9th September 2021 at 7:30pm at the Hornby Village Institute.

The agenda will be placed in the notice boards on Monday 6th Septem- ber, if you need any assistance, please contact the clerk.

Hannah Wallington (Clerk) 07815 604527 [email protected], 5 Monteagle Square, Hornby, Lancaster 18 TALES OF A PARISHIONER

Crafty….…. I’m not! Over the years I’ve tried many different kinds but am useless at them all. When I was at school we had knitting – even the teacher was annoyed when my fingers kept appearing from the wrist of the glove – and as for my tension, you could have used it for climbing rope. Then I managed to iron beautiful creases into the piece of material for sewing – and they took forever to get out again! Or when I asked the cookery teacher what would happen if I used icing sugar instead of flour (we took the ingredients from home & bought the rest at school). She looked and said, “I assume we are going to find out”!!! Not my fault Mum didn’t have any flour that week!

Then there was art! Not just bad at it, I hated it! Especially when I painted over a previously approved bench in a picture – Miss was not amused, and I had to do it again. But the next teacher said if I were quiet, I didn’t have to paint I could read, so it became my favourite sub- ject! Even with abstract art, I was useless – being colour blind leads to some interesting colour combinations.

Embroidery – perhaps I’m better at that as I have managed to finish a tablecloth. And ‘Santa Sacks’ for numerous children and grandchil- dren. We won’t talk about the half-finished pieces though secreted away. Always a book needs to be read and that’s a much better use of time.

As I grew older, I did try. Helping my mother-in-law make her daugh- ter’s wedding dress I thought I’d make the long train while she was out. It was perfect. Until she asked did you make sure the correct side of the material was on top? How was I to know orange peel satin had two sides – but thankfully it was, phew!

I’ve tried different crafts over the years but I’m no good at any of them and lose interest quite quickly. Flower pressing – Himself made me a brilliant press, it made a good step for high shelves. Then card making – the grandchildren made more than I did at times. Knitting jumpers for the little ones – the necks were so tight I had to open a seam and use poppers.

So, I stick to what I’m good at – reading books. And boosting Contd. 19

Amazon’s profits by sending craft items to little people. To my shame I do remember throwing my knitting on the floor and Mum asking who the boss was, me or the knitting. ‘The knitting’ I shouted crossly – ‘go to your room’ was my dad’s comment ‘and don’t shout at your mother’! No wonder I hate knitting, but I did get to read my book. Result!

And to answer your question – icing sugar isn’t a substitute for flour. It all boils up and goes over your best friend’s buns and you both have to make more. She didn’t speak to me for a week, and we never shared an oven again!

The congregation were surprised and delighted to have Michael our Vicar attending church at the beginning of July after his major surgery in May.

Michael will only be working part time for the rest of the summer. Rev. Steven Evans and Sister Judith OCMM will be assisting Michael in leading the services in St. Margaret's at 10.45 every Sunday during August. Do join us in church or online.

Grateful thanks to Simon Acomb, Rev. Steven Evans, Sister Judith, Peter Entwistle, Oliver Battersby, Neil Read, six volunteer preachers and the team of volunteers who are making the services possible.

The United Benefice Away Day is cancelled but will take place at a later date. Covid rules allowing, there will be a Memorial Concert for David Newton on Saturday 18th September. .

School’s out for summer! We have been so lucky to enjoy our last half-term in school without any virus-related closures. We’ve continued working hard in class and also enjoyed sports day, an outdoor adventure trip to and a Rounders Tournament (that we won!).

Children who will be starting in September have enjoyed some morn- ings meeting the teachers and getting used to being in school. How- ever, we were sad to say goodbye to Nell, Mia, Gracie, Grace, Gabi, Emily, Lucas, Ben, Ellen and Freddie who are leaving us for QES and the Lancaster Grammar Schools.

We were also sad to say goodbye to Cooky, our school cook, who has treated our children to some delicious food for 28 years!

The sun shone for a leavers’ assembly, so we were able to celebrate the time that they have all had at Hornby St Margaret’s and wish them luck for the future.

We hope that you all have a lovely summer and to be able to bring back some community events in the new academic year. 36

Final date for inclusion in September’s edition is 19th August.
