He confronts the demons in our individual experience and in the fabric of our society. When it feels irreplaceable, trust The range of responses to this call has been the central feature in this year’s Lent course. If you have not watched the videos that introduce how Christians across Sussex are living out that call, do find them on our website. They would be worth watching as part of your celebration of Easter. This edition also brings you an introduction to our candidates for ordination as deacon this year. As they prepare to embark on a ministry of service, as living signs and agents of the saving work of Jesus Christ, please pray for them. We welcome them with great joy to their new ministry, giving thanks for all who have prepared them, and who support them in this new and demanding life. A SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS (Figures in parenthesis refer to paragraphs of the Report dealing with these issues). General Synod 1. The overall size of the General Synod should be in the region of 470 to 480. (14-21) 2. The current formula for calculating the number of elected proctors and lay members should remain. (20) 3. The balance of elected proctors and lay members between the two provinces should be moved from 68/32 to 70/30. (21) 4. The representation of suffragan bishops should be seven (four from Canterbury and three from York). (22-23) 5. When a See is vacant, and provided that a suffragan bishop from that diocese is not already an elected member of the Synod, the bishop charged with responsibility for the diocese during the vacancy should be entitled to attend and speak, but not vote. (24-26) 6. Majority: There should be new special constituencies for archdeacons of eight from Canterbury and four from York, to be elected from all archdeacons in the respective provinces. (32-40) 7. There should be a national constituency for cathedral deans of five. (41-42) 8. Majority : The electorate for proctorial elections to the General Synod should be expanded to include clergy with permission to officiate (who would substantially comprise retired clergy) elected to a diocesan synod, who should also be eligible to stand for election to the General Synod. (43-49) 9. The seat on the Synod for the Chaplain General of Prisons should be retained. (50-51) 10. There should be a constituency of seven for the armed forces: at least three to be clergy and at least three to be lay.

THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 13th OCTOBER 2018 Under item 3 on page 1 David Griffith (Thetford and Rockland) stated the amendments made to the minutes for 23rd June 2018 were incorrect and should state the following correction: “…The Standing Advisory Committee (SACRE) is responsible for the production of the locally Agreed Syllabus for RE which is given to schools once the Agreed Syllabus Conference have written it…” The minutes were then approved and signed as a true record. 2. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE PREVIOUS MEETING There were no matters arising. Before commencing item 3 the Diocesan Secretary promulgated the following:- “At its February 2019 group of sessions, held in London, the General Synod resolved that Amending Canon No. 38 be made promulged and executed. Amending Canon No.38 replaces the former Canon B 43 (relations with other Churches) and Canon B 44 (local ecumenical projects) with a new Canon B 43 to be entitled “Of ecumenical relations.” 3. LENT APPEAL 2019 The Bishop of Lynn first asked permission for guest speakers The Revd Canon Richard Bartlett (Director of Mission Engagement at USPG) and Davidson Solanki (USPG Programme Manager for Asia) to present to Synod. Approval was given. 1 The Bishop of Lynn introduced this item by explaining that in the intervening years of supporting Papua New Guinea, this year the chosen 2019 Lent Appeal did not have a direct connection with the Diocese but a close working relationship with USPG and the work they are doing to prevent human trafficking.

  • St Nick's News
St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 1 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 From the Vicar Dear Sisters and Brothers, In this first edition of the parish magazine since our return to worship in church, our editor includes a series of pieces on the experience of ‘coming back’ to St Nick’s. I am very pleased we can share these reflections here, both by way of encouragement for those of you who may be considering a return to church; and also as a historical record of this remarkable period in our history. I struggle to offer a simple vignette from my own experience of ‘coming back’. This is partly because I am still processing the events of the last six months, attempting to comprehend what it means for us to have withdrawn to our homes; to have lived daily in the shadow of this disease, and to have lost our habitual contact with those we love. This all takes time. As a parish priest, I am also still trying to make sense of the complete closure of our church buildings, although this has not happened in many other European countries; and why the clergy have been instructed to abstain from so much pastoral and sacramental ministry, although our own government has designated us as key workers. I will write no more about this here, because my words will be unformed and tinged with frustration. If you are interested in reading a set of critical perspectives more articulate than my own about the current state of the Church of England, you can find some here: https://allthingslawfulandhonest.wordpress.com/ 2 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 Remaining in the present, I am delighted that we have been able to re- open church, and are now able to come together for worship.

  • The Stone Coffins of Bosham Church
FROM THE ARCHIVES: THE STONE COFFINS OF BOSHAM CHURCH I have kept to the old spelling of Canute throughout this article, since this was how it was spelt until quite recently, but it is now more usual to spell it ‘Cnut’. Is King Canute’s Daughter buried in Bosham Church? Unfortunately, it is not possible to give a definite answer to this question but I did think that visitors to the church via the website or in person to the church itself, might be interested in the long held tradition that King Canute’s daughter was drowned in the millstream early in the 11 th century, and buried in Bosham church and the subsequent finding of a small stone coffin in front of the chancel arch in 1865. Canute was King of England from 1016-1035 and although we have no written evidence that Canute had a Manor House in Bosham or indeed ever had time to come to Bosham, this tradition has been handed down from generation to generation and the story has gradually evolved over the years from Saxon princess to King Canute’s daughter. There is also the little stone effigy which is on the recessed tomb by the organ in the chancel of the church and which was thought to represent the little princess but carved much later, possibly, in the reign of Edward I (1272-1307), as a suitable memorial to her. The effigy and tomb do not appear to go together. In 1865 when considerable restoration work was being done in the church the Reverend Henry Mitchell, Vicar of Bosham from 1845-1912, decided to take the opportunity to test this long held tradition.

God and Mrs Thatcher: Religion and Politics in 1980s Britain Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2010 Liza Filby University of Warwick University ID Number: 0558769 1 I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is entirely my own. ……………………………………………… Date………… 2 Abstract The core theme of this thesis explores the evolving position of religion in the British public realm in the 1980s. Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. The first part of this thesis addresses the established Church.
