Harvest Fest 2017 By Shaun Hassanali and Laura Rupert

ByHarvest Shaun FHassanaliest was a spectacular event! There were many activities for all those to have a great time - from the crafts, to the food, to the pie-in the face contest, amazing job on all! But it leaves me with one question- what did I do to deserve the top nomination for pie-in-the face? From Left to Right: Jessica Breckenridge, Shaun Hassanali, Dan Mallett, Bob Easy, Jim Watson, Laura Rupert A Pie-in-the-Face Experience As a vote was done online (on the MCA Facebook page) the community came together in voting the ‘winners’ for getting a Pie-in-the-Face. They included: Bob Easy, Dan Mallett, Scott Moffatt and I! With the support of Danbys providing the whip cream, we all had the fun opportunity of getting hit in the face - seeing the smiling faces of kids and adults trying to get us! The one fun memory I can recall from having pie in the face, was the delicious taste of the whip cream! Perhaps next year, others will want to share in this spectacular event of tasting the delicious whip cream!

Thankfully we were blessed with nice weather this Harvest Fest and Munsterites, young and wise, could take in the activities and participate in the fun.

On our menu this year was pulled pork sandwiches and corn, and I hear they were a hit! Which I'm very thankful to hear since it was my first time EVER making pulled pork! Thanks to Jude, Curt, Barb, Lisa, Shaun and all our other volunteers for running that station.

The community also got to enjoy the Photo Booth from the Goulbourn Museum, amazing face painting from the Painted Pixie, the petting zoo and pony rides from Big Sky ranch, the artifacts from the Historical Society, the Bee display (and candy) from the Horticultural Society, the baked goods from the Munster Playgroup, the super cute crafts from the Munster Pre-school, all the vendors, Mayor Jim Watson, City Councillor Scott Moffatt, and MP Pierre Poilievre for joining us in the festivities and for their sponsorship; to Susan, our wonderful librarian for hosting a story time yoga and for helping run the Pie-in-the-Face. The money we raised from the Pie-in-the-Face and pony rides were donated to our local food bank. We donated $400 and some canned goods to the food bank. Thank you, everyone for supporting this cause! I'd also like to thank the very talented people from Munster for their baked goods, crafts and art. There were so many great submissions this year, and the judges found it very difficult to choose. But there could only be one winner in each category, and they are as follows:

Adult Category Children’s Category Best Photograph: Susie Dever Best Photograph: Paige Thomas Best Baked Good: Genn Browne Best Baked Good: Ryker Doane Best Artwork: Gabi Beyer Best Artwork: Sophie Smith Best Craft: Sarah Josee Best Craft: *It was a cute little toad, but I can't Best Textile Piece: Meghan Goddard remember who won it. * Best Textile Piece: Kate Breckenridge

Thanks to everyone who participated. If you have not been in contact with Jessica Breckenridge or me to claim your prize, please contact us as soon as possible.

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to the MCA, Rental Village, Saunders Farm, Jabulani Winery, Laura Lee Photography (yay me!), and all the others mentioned above, for sponsoring this event. We couldn't have done it without your support. To the dedicated team who run these events with me, thank you for your continuous guidance, assurance and support. I really can't do this without you! And lastly, to every single person who participated in this event, THANK YOU! Your participation means that we succeed, and get motivated to make it bigger and better next year and for many years to come.

MCA Logo We are thrilled to announce that Option 2 was chosen for the new MCA logo and revealed at Harvest Fest. The decision was made by the MCA executive based on the feedback given by the community, 70% supported the idea to incorporate a four leaf clover in the design of our logo. The thinking behind our new logo, specifically the choice of the four leaf clover:

 Munster was originally named after one of the kingdoms in Ireland, where many of its first descendants originated from.  The four leaf clover has four leaves, one for each quadrant in Munster.  We are so lucky to be surrounded by nature here in Munster.  We’re also pretty lucky to live in such a special place.

Special thanks once again to our MCA Member at Large, Jody Ferguson, at Voilà Creative for designing the logo.

The MCA Logo held by City Councillor Scott Moffat in the Big Red Chair surrounded by some of the MCA Executive Members at Harvest Fest.

NO DITCH DUMPING! Please, be a good neighbour, dispose of your waste properly. Yard waste is picked up weekly at your curb. Please DO NOT throw yard waste over your back fence if you back onto Munster Road – it will distract from the beauty of our village to visitors and residents, interfere with mowing of the grass, and if the City has to clean it up you might be liable for the cost.

Halloween Contest 2017 The warm temperatures of Munster had many houses in the community decorated! This year, the MCA held its’ third Annual Munster Halloween haunted decorated house contest. There were many contestants in different quadrants fighting for the title of scariest house in their respective Spooktacular quadrant.

When I asked some participants how long they take to get their homes ready, they indicated months of planning! One individual I asked, who wanted to remain anonymous, stated that, “they have already started planning for next year!”

A huge thank you to all that participated! The contest was opened to all houses in Munster, along Bleeks Road and Biltmore Crescent, had over 60 decorated homes!

The winners for this year’s contest included:

Biltmore Crescent Bleeks Road 104 Biltmore Crescent 7837 Bleeks Road

Scavenger Hunt By Laura Rupert Another event, the Munster Scavenger Hunt, was also a BIG HIT this fall. 15 teams participated in the spookiest and funnest hunt yet! (Yes, I totally just said funnest! lol). HORROR FILM was the theme and thankfully Jason, Pennywise, Michael Myers, the girl from the ring, the masked guy from Scream, and a Nun from the Exorcist all cleared their horrific schedules and were all able to join us to make my vision come to life! There were some great costumes too! Congratulations to Shannon and Evan Morrow for taking home the Best Costume Prize and to Laurie Neff and Trish Easson for winning the Scavenger Hunt - Bravo!

Thank you to the MCA for your sponsorship, to Deb for allowing us to host this event at Danby's and for donating SENS tickets, to Susan, our librarian, for helping in the event and for being a genius and coming up with the green screen idea so all the participants who found the Exorcist could take a picture and have a souvenir of their gruesome fun. Also, special thanks to all my "creepers" for making the participants do some fun and crazy tasks, to everyone who donated prizes and to my amazing team (Kelly and Teresa) for helping me pull this off and for every single person who participated in this fun and spooky night. This event was started because of the LOVE I have for scavenger hunts and I remember, as a child, watching my family participate in them in their home towns and saying to myself, someday I'm going to host something like this.

It's something I've enjoyed doing for many years, but sadly, because I am a photographer and September and October is my busy season, I have to give something up. Harvest Fest is enjoyed by a larger crowd, and so sadly, I must give up the Scavenger Hunt. Thank you to everyone for making this one as awesome as it was. I will miss your costumes, laughs and stories of this amazing night!

A Message from Scott Moffatt Councillor, City of Ottawa Rideau-Goulbourn Ward 613 580-2491 | RideauGoulbourn.ca

As we approach the Holiday season, it is time to say farewell to 2017 and to reflect on the incredible year our country’s 150th birthday was and to celebrate the wonderful activities that took place in Munster.

The Munster Community Association (MCA) did a fantastic job at organizing and celebrating Canada’s sesquicentennial in your village.

I am sure that there will be many lasting memories created for Munster residents and visitors alike as many of the Canada Day celebrations were cancelled due to weather. I know first-hand (or should I say, first dip) how special the Munster celebration was.

As mentioned earlier in the newsletter, I was also quite a draw during the Pie-in-the-Face competition at Harvest Fest.

As we look ahead to 2018 and more exciting MCA events, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and the very best for the New Year.

I’M BUYING GIFTS ONLINE. HOW CAN INSURANCE HELP ME?

The holiday season is here and for many, this involves online shopping. While a convenient way to purchase gifts, it can result in identity theft scams – where someone’s personal information is used for financial gain. According to the Government of Canada, online scams accounted for more than 20,000 complaints and over $40 million in losses for Canadians in 2016. Here are some tips on avoiding online scams and how insurance can help.

WATCH THE WEBSITES While purchases are a click away, it’s important to review the website. Reputable online retailers have secured websites. This means information in transactions is encrypted, which is a way to prevent customer information (such as a credit card number) from being leaked. Secure websites begin with “https” in the address and usually, a closed lock icon is visible within the website address.

PURCHASE ON SECURE NETWORKS Like the website address, it’s important to ensure the network used to access the website is secure. It’s ideal to avoid using public Wi-Fi for transactions as it could be hacked; this could result in someone’s credit card information being stolen. Using a home or private, secured network which is password protected is a safer option.

CHECK ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE Another way to prevent identity theft with online shopping is ensuring a computer or mobile device has updated anti-virus software and anti-spyware filters. This measure is a way to add an additional layer of protection to a secure network. It could also help in catching computer viruses before they impact a computer or mobile device.

KEEP AWAY FROM “PHISHERS” If a purchase has been made online, a customer may receive a confirmation email. However, if personal or banking information is requested in an email message, it’s likely to be a scam – the request should not be answered. If this occurs, it’s important to contact the company to inform them of the message. Additionally, if the request includes a link, it should not be clicked. Not only could it bring a customer to a site to fill in their financial information but it could also result in a virus being downloaded.

HOW INSURANCE CAN HELP If someone’s identity is stolen, it could be costly – there could be legal fees, lost income from time away from work and fees to restore an identity. While the coverage will depend on the policy, identity theft insurance could help with these expenses. It’s often added to an existing home insurance policy and a BrokerLink broker can explain what type of coverage best suits the owner.

CANADA 150 CELEBRATIONS We want to give a big thank you to all the people who have helped us celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Our challenge to the Munster community to read 150 Canadian authors by both adults and children was a huge success. The call for creative people to help us make a mosaic of what Canada means to them was answered with some amazing art. The finished mosaic is now on display at the library. Other special activities we did this year were the “Haunted Halloween” day. The community support for it was wonderful. A special “Canadian I Spy” exhibit was also enjoyed by the children.

Youth Sports in Munster Elementary School Gym

Do you have children interested in some pick-up sports like basketball at the Munster Elementary School gym? Showcase your business at www.MunsterOnline.ca on Some residents have suggested that drop-in basketball would be good to Facebook at various events, in the offer in the community. The MCA is interested to know if this would be a Quarterly Newsletter and in the good program to offer in the community. Please let us know if you have Telephone Directory. children who would be interested in participating. Please contact the In order to run a drop-in program, we would also need an adult to volunteer Communications Director at to organize this activity. There would also need to be an adult attendant on- [email protected] site. for updated rate information and opportunities. This would be a great opportunity for a few residents to share the attendant shifts and give the youth in the area an opportunity to keep active over the winter.

The Munster Elementary School gym currently has space available on Wednesdays from 8-10pm and every second Thursday from 6-8pm.

If we can find a volunteer, then the program could be offered at minimal or no cost as the MCA could consider funding the program. Alternately, if we cannot find a volunteer the City might consider running the drop-in program, but this would be a greater cost to the users and would be dependent on finding an attendant as well.

Please provide your feedback to Jessica Breckenridge at [email protected] or 613-816-4522. The Munster Community Centre is available to rent at reasonable rates for private functions, community classes and special events. All rental fees stay within the community to support our community.
