Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 11, 2019 St. Hilary Church Chicago, IL

Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, TODAY’S READINGS of Chicago, on last weekend’s tragedies 1st Reading: Wisdom 18:6-9 2nd Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19 Today the Archdiocese of Chicago mourns and prays for the Gospel: Luke 12:32-48 victims of the gun massacres in El Paso and Dayton. We stand with their loved ones, demanding an end to this deadly status quo. We reject the idea that living in America means risking being gunned down by a killer wielding an assault weapon designed for mass killing. We refuse to become inured to the horrible idea that families must calculate the risk of violent death when considering how to spend a summer weekend. We cannot tolerate a society in which parents have to wonder whether the child they dropped off in the morning will become another statistic or if their own lives will end that day in their place of work. Mass shootings are not an inevitability. All human beings have the right to live without violence. To behave otherwise is to advance a lie. Stopping this lie begins with holding accountable our elected officials who have done nothing to address gun violence. Inaction only cements the idea that these tragedies are acceptable and that the weapons that enable them are simply common features of American life today. But we also need to hold accountable those in society, including some leaders, who fuel these violent acts by dividing humanity through hateful rhetoric. This must stop — along with the silence of our elected officials who have failed to condemn hate speech, for they are the very ones who have sworn to keep our nation safe. We know that together we can do something to stem the flow of blood. And we call on our elected officials to show us that they know it too.

“They desire a better homeland.” (Hebrews 11:16) Friday, Aug.16 - Back to School Night 6 pm Not just desires of faith-filled travelers in today’s - FSA Movie in the Parking Lot 7:30 pm Scriptures, but also the cry of our desires as well. Cardinal Cupich’s blunt words about last week’s Tuesday, Aug. 20 - First Day of School shootings demand real responses in our homeland. Wednesday, Aug. 21 - All-School Mass 8:30 am Saturday, Aug. 24 - FSA Car Wash in the Parking Lot Fr. Tom Libera 9 am - 1 pm

7 A CHILD’S PRAYER AFTER RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION

O good Jesus, I am so happy to have You with me. How can I ever thank You enough for coming to me in Holy Communion? You are the Lord of heaven and earth. I am so weak and small, and yet I hold You in my heart. You have been so good and kind to give Yourself to me. Please accept all that I am and have. I want to give my heart to You. I want to belong to You. Please help me do everything that You want me to do. Keep me always close to You as long as I live, and let me come to You in heaven when I die. O Jesus, in the most Holy Eucharist, have mercy on me. I love You.

St. , whose name means "Daughter of Light," is one of the earliest known Christian martyrs. She is also a patron saint of baseball. When she refused to marry the Emperor Diocletian, she was scourged, thrown into a river with an anchor around her neck, and shot through with arrows. Miraculously, she survived! Finally, she was beheaded. So many miracles were attributed to her, she became known as "The Wonder Worker." Hence, the reason she’s the patron saint of baseball. She can work wonders! Her feast day is August 11. 8
