International University Arrival Information - Spring Semester 2020

In order to start your check-in process and mandatory orientation on April 1st, please be sure to make your travel itinerary to arrive on campus during the times above.

1. Instruction to complete the Arrival Form online

* First, submit the Arrival Form online by Sunday, March 15 from your Study Abroad Progress page in the online application system (https://csw.aiu.ac.jp/campussa/ ).

* All students must use AIU’s free pick-up bus service from , Akita Station, or Hotel Plaza Crypton to travel to campus. Please sign up for the free pick-up bus via the online Arrival Form. See the detailed information about meeting points and the bus schedules below.

2. Pick-up Places and Bus Schedules

2-1) Akita Airport ..Meeting Point: Domestic Arrival Gate Lobby (on the ground floor)

* Please sign up for the pick-up bus that runs soonest after your arrival time of your flight on the Arrival Form.

* Akita Airport is a small airport and it should take only about 10 minutes to pick up your checked luggage at the baggage claim. The arrival lobby is just where you exit the baggage claim floor.

* Please note that Akita Airport is NOT open 24-hours. It closes at 10:00 pm, and you are not allowed to stay in the airport overnight. If you plan to arrive in Akita prior to the check-in date, please be sure to reserve a hotel on your own. 5 12:25 *Please Do NOT take the local public bus operated by Akita Chuou Kotsu or public airport shuttle bus. They charge a fare and it runs on a different schedule from AIU’s free pick-up bus schedule. Be sure to meet AIU staff in the arrival lobby at the meeting time.

1 2-2) JR Akita Station ...... Meeting Point: Bus Stop No. 5 at East Exit (東口 Higashi Guchi )

* Please sign up for the pick-up bus that runs soonest after the arrival time of your train.

* Some overnight buses arrive at the West Exit of JR Akita Station. Please note that the AIU pick-up bus leaves from the East Exit.

1) When you exit the Central Exit (中央口), turn to the LEFT and go toward the East Exit (東口 / Higashi-guchi ). 2) At the end of the pathway to the East Exit, go down to the ground floor by elevator or stairs. 3) AIU pick-up bus will leave from Bus Stop No. 5, the farthest bus stop at the Bus/Taxi pool.

3. Taxi and Public Transportation Information (FYI) In principle, you must use AIU’s free pick-up service. Even if you missed your reserved AIU free pick-up bus, you can take the next pick-up bus, even without a reservation. However, in the event that you miss the last AIU free pick-up bus from your pick-up point, you would need to reach our campus by yourself by taxi or by public transportation. Only in that case, please refer to the information below.

■ TAXI ……from Akita Airport / JR Akita Station / Yotsugoya Station / Wada Station

(1) Akita Air port → AIU campus approx. 1,8 00 yen 10 min. (2 ) JR Akita Station → AIU campus approx. 7,500 yen 30 min. (3) Yotsugoya Station → AIU campus approx. 3,100 yen 20 min (4 ) Wada Station → AIU campus approx. 1,800 yen 10 min.

If you take a taxi and you are not confident to tell the driver your destination correctly, please show the following memo to the driver. It gives the driver your destination as AIU bus rotary, as well as the address and phone number.

There is another university called “Akita University” in Akita city, so please make sure to tell the driver that your destination is Akita International University or “Kokusai-Kyōyō-Daigaku (国際教 養大学 )”.

■ Train …………………………………………………………………………………….from JR Akita Station

JR Akita Station 秋田駅(あきたえき)  TRAIN Take the Ōu-Honsen Line 奥羽本線 (bound for Shinjo 新庄 , Yuzawa 湯沢 , Yokote 横手 , or Innai 院内 ). *If you arrive by , you will have to pass through the connecting gate (not the exit gate) to reach the local Ōu-Honsen Line. *Price: 200 yen

JR Yotsugoya Station 四ツ小屋駅(よつごやえき )  Public Bus Take a bus for Akita International University. The Japanese written on the bus is: 国際教養大学 (AIU ). *Price: 200 yen  TAXI *Price: approx. 3,100 yen *If you intend to take a taxi, it is better to go one stop further to

Wada Station (train fare 240 yen), where no buses are available, but taxi would cost approx. 1,800 yen.

BUS: 25 min. (5 stops)

TAXI: 20 min .

AIU Campus

Once you reach the bus stop in front of cafeteria on campus , 1) Before 17:00 on April 1: Go into the cafeteria entrance lobby 2) After 17:00 on April 1: Go to Hall Office as shown the map in the last page.

If your flight/train is delayed, please contact usF

If your flight or train is delayed and you may not be able to take your reserved free pick-up bus, you can take the next pick-up bus, but please let us know about any changes !

* If you arrive in Akita after the last free pick-up bus left from your pick-up spot, you will need to get to AIU on your own. On arrival, please go to the “ Komachi Hall Reception ” (see map below) and receive your room key and a document package. In addition, please make sure to come to the Office of Student Affairs on the next day, Thursday, April 2nd for necessary procedures. Further details will be included in your document package.

* If you happen to arrive on campus at night, there may be no food service available on campus. Therefore, please buy something to eat before you come to AIU.
