GODFREY REGGIO (Director, Koyaanisqatsi) Is a Pioneer of a Film Form That Creates Poetic Images of Extraordinary Emotive Impact
GODFREY REGGIO (Director, Koyaanisqatsi) is a pioneer of a film form that creates poetic images of extraordinary emotive impact. Reggio is best known for the Qatsi Trilogy – essays of image and music, speechless narrations which question the world in which we live. Born in New Orleans in 1940, Reggio entered the Christian Brothers, a Roman Catholic Pontifical Order, at age 14 and remained as a monk until 1968. In 1963, he co-founded Young Citizens for Action, a community organization of juvenile street gangs. Reggio co-founded La Clinica de la Gente and La Gente, a community organizing project in Northern New Mexico’s barrios. In 1972, he co- founded the Institute for Regional Education in Santa Fe, a nonprofit organization focused on media, the arts, community organization and research. In collaboration with the New Mexico Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, Reggio co- organized a multimedia public interest campaign on the invasion of privacy and the use of technology to control behavior. Reggio’s collaboration on Koyaanisqatsi with Ron Fricke (Director of Photography) and Philip Glass (Composer) gained an international audience, critical acclaim and launched the Qatsi Trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi has been played live over 200 times in venues worldwide. Reggio’s collaborations with Philip Glass, include: Koyaanisqatsi (1982), Powaqqatsi (1988), Naqoyqatsi (2002), Anima Mundi (1992), Evidence (1995) and Visitors (2013). In 1993, Reggio was invited by Luciano Benetton and Oliviero Toscani to develop a new school “to smell the future” – an enterprise of exploration and production in the arts, technology and mass media. Called Fabrica – Futuro Presente, it opened in the middle of the ‘90s in Treviso, Italy. -

Arguably, Euripides felt it necessary to use these,deistic feminine connections to destroy the titular male characters. The tragedian's implicaticn is clear: divine feminine power supersedes patriarchal power. This divine power is inherent in all women and it compels them act on behalf of cosmic necessity'. The importance of Medea's, Phaedra's and Agave's respective spiritual connections shows us the crucial role that women ptayed in ancient religious worship. -

Heroic Action: The Gender of Justice and Nobility in Sophocles’ Antigone J. Scott Lee Temple University July 31, 1996 1 Pericles’ “Funeral Oration” indicates that the Athenian populace was disposed to accept distinctions between male and female actions and virtue: Holding vengeance upon their enemies was more to be desired than any personal blessings, and reckoning this to be the most glorious of hazards, [the Athenian soldiers] joyfully determined to accept the risk, to make sure of their vengeance. So died these men as became Athenians. If I must say anything on the subject of female excellence to [widows], it will be comprised in this brief exhortation. Great will be your glory in not falling short of your natural character; and greatest will be hers who is least talked of among men...1 However, such acceptance was not found among all prominent writers, nor were alternatives hidden from public display. Indeed, Sophocles, in his play, Antigone, collapsed many of the gender distinctions illustrated by the passage above. This essay argues that a radical egalitarianism is essential to the heroic actions of Antigone. Sophocles makes Antigone perform an admirable act which was masculinely gendered in Athenian society, Greek literature, and the Theban world of this play: Antigone 1. Feetham, Great Books of the Western World (Chicago: Encyclopedia Britannica: 1952), 2: 42-43 and 45, pp. 398-399. 2 rescues Polynices’ body from the disgrace of lying unburied on a battlefield outside Thebes. Then, after Theban retribution for this burial, Sophocles reverses Antigone’s suffering through a final speech which, in its reliance on her expectations and experiences as a woman, makes her demand for justice admirably right.2 Thus, Sophocles’ egalitarianism takes the form of just and admirable action which, if done by a man, probably would have been thought just by many of the Greeks who witnessed the play’s first performance. -

Buchanan This dissertation explores the formal elements of Robert Wilson’s art, with a focus on two in particular: time and space, through the methodology of Chaos Theory. Although this theory is widely practiced by physicists and mathematicians, it can be utilized with other disciplines, in this case visual arts and theater. By unfolding the complex layering of space and time in Wilson’s art, it is possible to see the hidden reality behind these artifacts. The study reveals that by applying this scientific method to the visual arts and theater, one can best understand the nonlinear and fragmented forms of Wilson's art. Moreover, the study demonstrates that time and space are Wilson's primary structuring tools and are bound together in a self-renewing process. -

ABOUT THE CAST Trojan Women (after Euripides) September 8–October 1, 2011 At the J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Villa Akiko Aizawa’s (Kassandra) recent productions with SITI include Antigone, Radio Macbeth, bobrauschenbergamerica, Under Construction, Who Do You Think You Are, and American Document (2010). She has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, American Repertory Theater, Arena Stage, LA Opera, Dance Theater Workshop, and Joyce Theater. Aizawa has appeared at festivals and venues in Edinburgh, Dublin, Bonn, Bobigny, Sydney, Bogotá, Tokyo, Toga, and Moscow. J. Ed Araiza (Menelaus), a SITI Company member, has a long history of working on multicultural and crossdisciplinary projects as a writer, director, and performer. His most recent Los Angeles appearance was in La Victima at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. Araiza’s recent SITI productions include Under Construction and Who Do You Think You Are. In November he will direct The Adding Machine at the University of California, Los Angeles; in January he will direct The Seagull in Windsor, Canada. As a playwright, Araiza has had seven original plays produced. Katherine Crockett (Helen) is a principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. She danced as Cate Blanchett’s double in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and played Helen in Richard Move’s The Show (Achilles Heels) with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Crockett also has been a soloist dancer for Robert Wilson, Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Stroman, and designer Alexander McQueen. DATE: August 12, 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ABOUT THE COMPANY Sophocles' Elektra Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, September 9—October 2, 2010 Carey Perloff (Director) Carey Perloff is celebrating her nineteenth season as artistic director of Tony Award-winning American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) in San Francisco, where she is known for directing innovative productions of classics, championing new writing for the theater, and creating international collaborations with such artists as Robert Wilson and Tom Stoppard. Before joining A.C.T., Perloff was artistic director of Classic Stage Company (CSC) in New York. She is a recipient of France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the National Corporate Theatre Fund’s 2007 Artistic Achievement Award. Perloff received a B.A. Phi Beta Kappa in classics and comparative literature from Stanford University and was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Oxford. She has taught at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Acting at A.C.T., in addition to authoring numerous plays. This is Perloff’s second encounter with Sophocles’ Elektra, having directed the world premiere of Ezra Pound’s version of the play at CSC in 1988. Knox "IN HUMAN LIFE," says the Nurse in Euripides' Hippolytus (435-6), "second thoughts are somehow wiser." Like many another character in Euripidean tragedy, she has just changed her mind, and, in true Euripidean style, she justifies her action with a generaliza tion. It is not a generalization which would have recommended itself to Aeschylus and Sophocles; before Euripides, change of mind is a rare phenomenon on the tragic stage.! Aeschylus, as Bruno Snell has demonstrated, broke new ground in Greek poetry with his explicit presentation of a conscious human choice between alternatives, a free human decision which commits its taker to a tragic course.2 The responsibility the hero thus assumes, and the complex relation of his choice to the will of the gods and his own heredity, allow little scope for a change of mind. Aeschylean drama is linear; its principal figures, their decision once made, pursue their chosen course to the bitter end.3 In the Persians, which is the tragedy of a whole people rather than an individual, and which furthermore works through retrospect and prophecy rather than through present action, a change of mind is excluded by the nature of the dramatic organization. In the Seven against Thebes, Eteocles, at the end of a slow, almost static, preparation, makes his swift decision to fight against his brother; it is a decision, but not a change of mind-he had already decided to fight in person at one of the gates (282) and the gate where Polynices awaits him is the last remaining assignment. -
About the Cast
ABOUT THE CAST BURTON CURTIS (Watchman) has performed as Pierrot in Stephen Wadsworth’s productions of Molière’s Don Juan (McCarter Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Old Globe, and Seattle Rep). He also portrayed Dumas in Wadsworth’s productions of Marivaux’s Triumph of Love (Long Wharf Theatre, Missouri Rep, and Seattle Rep). Burton originated the role of Eddie Wicket in the west coast premiere of Louis Broom’s Texarkana Waltz (Circle X Theatre Co., L.A. and the Empty Space Theatre, Seattle). He also created the dual roles of Brother Mills and Heathcliff in Wuthering! Heights! The! Musical! and performed in The Complete History of America (Abridged) (Empty Space and Actors Theatre of Louisville). Other roles include Tom in The Glass Menagerie (Tacoma Actors Guild) and Freddy in Noises Off (Village Theatre, Issaquah). He played the title role in Jillian Armenante’s production of Camille and Little Mary in a “gender blind” production of The Women (Annex Theatre, Seattle). Film credits include Crocodile Tears, Money Buys Happiness, and Great Uncle Jimmy as well as Gus Van Sant’s Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Burton is also a director and choreographer and has received awards for his work on the stage from the Seattle Post Intelligencer and Seattle Weekly. He was listed by Backstage West among “100 Actors We Love.” He received his BFA in theater from Baylor University and now resides in Seattle. Burton is delighted to be making his Getty debut and is thrilled to be joining Mr. Wadsworth in yet another exciting project. This thesis surveys the earliest versions of Medea’s myth to establish a basic narrative and furnish a range of variations. In particular, I examine the use of similar scenes in tragedies by Euripides and Seneca for contrasting representations of Medea. Individual analyses of Medea’s representation by each playwright demonstrate how her character is altered and what the activation of different mythical variants means in their cultural contexts. Medea’s gender plays a prominent role in her myth and this thesis analyzes its affect on her representation and perception. By demonstrating the manipulability of a specific mythical character based on a playwright’s preference or societal perception, this thesis explores the organic and dynamic nature of myth. -

Antigone A Greek Tragedy by Sophocles Tragedy • A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances. The formation of tragedy was the blend of lyrical and epic poetry combined with ritual dancing. Chorus • The chorus was considered to be the mouthpiece of society and suffered along with the heroes. • After Sophocles, the chorus had 15 members and stood in a circle Ancient Greek Masks • The members of the chorus wore masks, usually similar to each other but completely different from the leading actors Ancient Greek Masks • Because the number of actors varied from one to three, they had to put on different masks, in order to play more roles. • The actors were all men. The mask was therefore necessary to let them play the female roles. Sophocles • A definitive innovator in the drama, he added a third actor, increased the size of the chorus, abandoned the trilogy of plays for the self- contained tragedy, and introduced scene painting. Antigone • A tragedy written in 442 BC by Sophocles • Chronologically the third of the three Theban plays but was written first – Oedipus the King – Oedipus at Colonus – Antigone • After Oedipus is exiled, he leaves the ruling rights of Thebes to his two sons, Eteocles and Polynices who must take it in turns to rule. • Eteocles rules first but the two becomes enemies after Eteocles refuses to give up the throne, and Polynices is exiled. • At the beginning of the play, both brothers are dead, apparently slain by the other's hand.
