Bon Echo Provincial Park
BON ECHO PROVINCIAL PARK One Malaise trap was deployed at Bon Echo Provincial Park in 2014 (44.89405, -77.19691 278m ASL; Figure 1). This trap collected arthropods for twenty weeks from May 7 – September 24, 2014. All 10 Malaise trap samples were processed; every other sample was analyzed using the individual specimen protocol while the second half was analyzed via bulk analysis. A total of 2559 BINs were obtained. Over half the BINs captured were flies (Diptera), followed by bees, ants and wasps (Hymenoptera), moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), and beetles (Coleoptera; Figure 2). In total, 547 arthropod species were named, representing 22.9% of the BINs from the site (Appendix 1). All BINs were assigned at least to Figure 1. A detailed description, illustrations, and discussion concerning morphologically similar and phylogenetically closely related species are provided for each species. From light and scanning electron microscopy observations C. diebuensis is characterized by the nailhead to peltate aeciospores, with separated stilt-like base. C. zhuoni- ensis differs from other known Chrysomyxa species in the annulate aeciospores with distinct longitudinal smooth cap at ends of spores, as well as with a broken, fissured edge. Analysis based on internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) partial gene sequences reveals that the two species cluster as a highly supported group in the phylogenetic trees. Correlations between the morphological and phylogenetic features are discussed. Illustrations and a detailed description are also provided for the aecia of C. succinea in China for the first time. Tabell & B. Wikström Abstract Coleophora proterella Wikström & Tabell, sp. n. is described as new. The new species belongs to the C. virgaureae species-complex. According to the genitalia structures it is closely related to C. obscenella Herrich- Schäffer, 1855, C. virgaureae Stainton, 1857, C. cinerea Toll, 1954, and according to the DNA barcode studies the closest species is C. squamosella Stainton, 1856. Photographs of the adult, genitalia and larval case of the new taxon are provided and the known distribution range is given. To combat or counteract the unpredictability of the weather, welcome to another ever-so-predictable edition of Hort Snacks. The content isn’t always predictable, but the arrival of it is. In this edition, you’ll notice a theme. And that theme is largely creepy/crawly. The season of insect wildlife is upon us, and to prepare you (and perhaps some of your customers) for identifying and dealing with some of those pests, you’ll find some caterpillar-related resources. Seamounts are poorly understood ubiquitous undersea features, with less than 4% sampled for scientific purposes globally. Consequently, the fauna associated with seamounts in the Indian Ocean remains largely unknown, with less than 300 species recorded. One such feature within this region is Walters Shoal, a shallow seamount located on the South Madagascar Ridge, which is situated approximately 400 nautical miles south of Madagascar and 600 nautical miles east of South Africa. Even though it penetrates the euphotic zone (summit is 15 m below the sea surface) and is protected by the Southern Indian Ocean Deep- Sea Fishers Association, there is a paucity of biodiversity and oceanographic data. -

Clements Co-Advisor: Prof. K. Steensma 1 Abstract Preserving the earth’s remaining biodiversity is a major conservation concern. Especially in areas where urban development threatens to take over prime species habitat, protecting green spaces can be an effective method for conserving local biodiversity. Establishing biological inventories of these green species can be crucial for the appropriate management of them and for the conservation of the species which use them. This particular study focused on a recently preserved forest plot, just 25 acres in size, which is now known as the Blaauw ECO Forest. The Blaauw ECO Forest was acquired by Trinity Western University in 2013 to serve as an ecological preserve where students and staff can conduct ecological research and conservation work. After ten months of research and over 100 hours of onsite observations, over 250 species of flora and fauna have been documented inhabiting or using the forest (e.g. as a breeding site). Throughout the duration of this study, several large mammals such as coyotes (Canis latrans), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and black bears (Ursus americanus) have been documented using the forest which highlights the forest’s use as patch habitat. Several provincially blue- listed species have also been seen in the forest, the Pacific Sideband snail (Monadenia fidelis) and Northern Red-legged Frog (Rana aurora) in particular, and these species may testify to the forest’s rich ecology.
