From Pledges to Action is a multi-stakeholder meeting of partners to recap the historic commitments of 2010 and develop an action plan to move forward the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health.

Two days of high-level plenaries and breakout sessions will feature success stories in financing, delivery and accountability; identify innovative strategies, policies and programs that can be scaled up for change; and promote consensus on next steps in mutual accountability across diverse stakeholder groups represented by The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health.

DAY ONE – SATURDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2010

Inaugural Session: The President of India, Her Excellency Pratibha Devisingh Patil, together with India’s Minister of Health & Family Welfare, will inaugurate the “Pledges to Action” meeting.

Plenary I: Setting the Stage - a Historic Opportunity to Save Millions of Lives: The opening session will set the stage for the Forum, and highlight achievements in 2010 - a landmark year for women’s and children’s health. The session will set the overall objectives of the Forum, discuss key elements of the Global Strategy, and present ways to transform the pledges made at the MDG Summit to action. Invited speakers: Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director UN Women and Former President, Chile; and Social Affairs Commissioner of the African Union, Bience Gawanas. CHAIR: Vinod Paul, Co-Chair, PMNCH Board.

Ministerial Session: Ministers from some 20 countries will discuss the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health and their role in turning promises into action.

Plenary II: More Money for Health - More Health for Money: This session will explore new mechanisms to achieve the MDGs by mobilizing more money, as well as encouraging more health for the money through innovations in financing, technology, and service delivery. Key note address: Julio Frenk, Chair PMNCH Board, Dean, Harvard School of Public Health and former Minister of Health, Mexico. CHAIR: Julian Schweitzer, Former Chair, PMNCH Board.

Five Concurrent Sessions explore key themes

1. Community Voices and Partner Accountability: This session will highlight the critical role of community participation in advancing maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH).

2 a. Innovation for Change and Scale up: Programmatic implementation: This session will discuss innovations in programme implementation, both on the demand and supply side.

2 b. Innovation for Change and Scale up: Technologies for MNCH: This session will discuss innovations in technologies for MNCH that have been scaled up or have the potential to do so, including ICT, biotechnology, and medical devices/ diagnostics.

3. Engaging Actors across Sectors: This session will discuss how we integrate sectors outside of MNCH (e.g. local government, micro credit, water supply, education, transport etc.) to achieve MNCH outcomes at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels.

4. Tracking Commitments and Outcomes: This session involves a technical discussion on the key indicators to track program inputs, delivery and outcomes. The key questions for discussion are who are the national and international actors that would keep track of progress against indicators, how to monitor progress, and how to help countries put in place systems for tracking commitments and outcomes.

DAY TWO – SUNDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2010

Plenary III: Accelerating action for Women’s and Children’s Health: This session will highlight successful experiences, promising solutions, and ongoing challenges faced by state and non-state actors in scaling-up programs and policies to achieve results for women’s and children’s health. CHAIR: Richard Horton, Editor, The Lancet.

Concurrent Sessions: In four Concurrent sessions, Constituency/Stakeholder groups will meet to explore common approaches to realize commitments and pledges in association with the UN Secretary-General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health. They include: Health Care Professional Organizations, Academic research and training organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Private sector.

A Parliamentary and Media Round Table will explore the role of these actors in turning pledges into action.

Plenary IV: Holding Ourselves Accountable: Principles and Next Steps for Unified Action : This closing plenary session will discuss principles and next steps in agreeing a common approach among all actors to ensure mutual accountability for commitments and targets set in the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health. CHAIR: Margaret Chan, Director-General, World Health Organization. Closing Session & Celebration of India’s Children’s Day
