394 GLOSSARY Acid Jazz Late 1980S and 1990S
GLOSSARY Acid Jazz Late 1980s and 1990s trend where “London fashion victims created their own early seventies-infatuated bohemia by copying jazz-funk records of the era note by note.”1 Associated with DJ Giles Peterson, acid jazz combined jazz and funk influence with electronica to produce a “danceable” version of jazz. Some of the most prominent British artists associated with acid jazz include are the band 4Hero, producer Ronny Jordan, and the James Taylor Quartet (the last of which at one point included Nitin Sawhney.) Ambient Music intended to create a particular atmosphere. Brian Eno, considered a pioneer of the genre, notes, “One of the most important differences between ambient music and nearly any other kind of pop music is that it doesn’t have a narrative structure at all, there are no words, and there isn’t an attempt to make a story of some kind.”2 Ambient music often substitutes distinct melodies and rhythmic patterns for a wash of sound. Some prominent British artists during the 1990s include The Orb, KLF, Mixmaster Morris and Aphex Twin. Bhangra Bhangra originated as a male folk dance in Punjab to accompany the harvest festival, Baisakhi. It is still performed as a folk dance and may be identified by its characteristic swinging rhythm played on the dhol and dholki, double-sided barrel drums. From the late 1970s onwards, Punjabi immigrants in Britain began to fuse with electronic dance styles including house music and later hip-hop.3 These styles produced a distinct genre of music that was recognized as one of the first prominent examples of British Asian youth culture. -

Breakbeats, Pop Hooks & Melodies
Breakbeats, Pop Hooks & Melodies: June’s New Albums Reviewed Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With the Brexit referendum looming most people in the UK are asking themselves, ‚How would a separation from the rest of Europe affect the price of vinyl?‘ The simple answer is that the price will rise! The main reason for this is that most of the pressing plants are based on the mainland, (and that’s not even figuring in having to pay import duty on those desired new 12inches on Kompakt, Workshop or Ostgut Ton). A convincing argument if ever there was one for any music fan in the British Isles to vote REMAIN. By JOHN BITTLES But, enough of politics! This week we have reviews of great new albums by Lone, New Order, James K, Lawrence, Jessy Lanza, Kris Wadsworth, Stabil Elite and more. So, without further ado,let us begin… After the gorgeous house tones of Reality Testing, electronic maverick Lone AKA Matt Cutler makes a welcome return to the album format with the rave and breakbeat inspired Levitate. Out now on R&S Records, the album is a short but sweet listening experience. Containing nine tracks with a total running time of just over 30 minutes, no one could ever accuse Levitate of outstaying its welcome. Apparently inspired by aural hallucinations caused by a severe fever, the album is a fast, frantic 90s inspired blast. Yet, Levitate never resorts to bland programming, or resting on the laurels of a 4/4 beat, as each and every track contains both musicality and warmth. -
Guinness: 'Surfer'
GUINNESS: ‘SURFER’ Agency: AMV BBDO Dir: Jonathan Glazer, Art Dir/Creators: Tom Carty, Walter Campbell, Creative Dir: P. Souter, Producer: Y. Chalkley, Sound Designer: J. Burns Production: Academy Film Productions, Publication: 2000, Length: 100secs. Visual Effects: The Computer Film Company; Dir: D. Parker, Effects: A. De Wet, 3D Animation: R. Clarke, Design & Grading: T. Debenham, Digital Paint Artists: G. Tooney, A. Payman, J. Pavlo. Created in 1850, Arthur Guinness’ company has been one of the largest advertising investors from when its first paper ads appeared in the UK in 1929, to winning Clio ‘Advertiser of the Year’ 2001.i Guinness spent £15m in the UK alone last year and in the 12 months to the end of June 2000, the brand spent £233m on advertising and promotion worldwide.ii Originally, the claim was that ‘Guinness is good for you’ and an emphasis was placed on its supposed strength-giving qualities. However, a tightening of advertising standards led to an abandonment of this and it was replaced by ironic, yet confusing slogans such as ‘Guinness isn’t good for you’. Unsurprisingly, these early ads have not stood the test of time. In the 1980s and early 90s, the drink’s characteristic black colour, with a creamy white head, became the selling point and seemingly anything sharing this profile, including a snow-topped black bucket, could represent a pint of Guinness. In 1987 this was extended to the blonde actor Rutger Hauer, dressed entirely in black, claiming that Guinness was ‘Pure Genius’. Hauer had played an emotional android in Blade Runner and the idea was to associate Guinness with intelligence, mystery and above all chic; ‘Guinness is cool’, an ‘…acquired taste’. -
The Socio-Sensual Practices of Clubbing
Sensual Culture: The Socio-Sensual Practices of Clubbing. Philip Gordon Jackson University College London In Fulfilment of PhD in Social Anthropology Submitted in June 2001 Abstract This study is examines of the world of clubbing when viewed as a holistic field of socio sensual practice. Over the course of this study I observed a consistent form of bodily practice, occurring in clubs, that had initially appeared very different from one another. This practice made these clubs more similar to one another than different and this socio-sensual similarity became the focus of this study. In order to examine this aspect of clubbing I have utilised a number of theoretical frameworks, that arose from a series of disparate fields, but which are still connected. From anthropology and sociology I have drawn upon the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Marcel Mauss, Michael Foucault, Norbert Elias and Chris Shilling. From Philosophy I have utilised the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. From neuro-cognitive studies I was strongly influenced by the work of Antonio Damasio and Joseph LeDoux. These alternate perspectives consolidate one another's assertions, as to the nature of this experiential encounter, and I have used them to provide a connective thread across the realm of clubbing. Nevertheless the vast bulk of theoretical material in this work is derived from observing and participating in club nights and interviewing clubbers, both at a formal and informal level. This has created a study which explores two aspects of the club scene. The first arises from the actual practice of clubbing: what people experience, how it affects them, what they make of it, and it is grounded in an ethnographic analysis of the space. -
