McGuinn Hall residents turned adversity into a party Tuesday night, when the hall was evacuated so firefighters could investigate fumes on the third floor. Despite the 40-degree temperatures, a group of girls danced on the lawn and socialized with friends for over an hour while the firefighters learned the fumes, which left some people choking and coughing, probably due to an accidental release of Mace. Wendy Stratton, a freshman electrical engineering major, had just gotten out of the shower when the third- floor residents were told to go to the basement because of the gas. When people started coughing, Stratton said, the hall was vacated around 8:30 p.m. While some girls socialized, others took a more serious approach. Jamese Carey, a freshman in the School of General Studies, twisted and turned to do her college orientation homework by the single light over the hall's front door. Capt. Even those seemingly behind Josephson think he's overstated the case. "I don't see rampant amorality," said psychology Prof. Stephen Davis of Emporia State University in Kansas. His survey of 6,000 collegians nationwide, in which he found a majority admitted to cheating in high school, was one of the studies on which Josephson based his report. The report also accused today's young people of being more violent, promiscuous, racist and ignorant than any other generation. For instance, the report says the 18 to 30 age group has committed more crimes against each other and their teachers than any other. "There's no question all of these behaviors have existed before," Josephson allowed, "but it's clear to us that many of the behaviors are happening in greater ' numbers." Young people aren't the only' one lacking moral values, says Jay Cassell, a protessor of religious thought at Rocky Mountain College in Montana. "We all have some very severe problems," Cassell said.
