RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. That the City Council designate the unnumbered location situated one sidewalk square southerly of and between numbered locations 27j and 261 as shown on Sheet 18 of Plan 13788 for the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the installation of the name of Muppets at 6834 Hollywood Boulevard.

B. Inform the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce ofthe Council's action on this matter.

C. That this report be adopted prior to the date of the ceremony on March 20, 2012.

DISCUSSION:

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame the name ofMuppets. The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:30 a.m.

The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street, 3rd Floor, Counter 23.

The star for will be located in the second row next to two blank squares which are not numbered. The stars nearest to THE MUPPETS in the original row are BURT REYNOLDS (27j) to the west and PEE WEE HUNT (261) to the east. According to sheet #18 plan 13788, THE MUPPETS' star has no designated number. The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:30 a.m.

Since "" began in 1976. the Muppets by audiences began wlth a single appearance from an unknown frog became a global phenomenon is still going strong 35 years later.

By 1971, the Muppets could be seen on U.K. variety shows, such as those hosted by Tom Jones and , before making their to Germany for "The Peter Alexander Show" in 19'?5.

The first pilot of what would become 'The Muppet Show" aired on January 30.1974. and was titled "The Muppets Valentine Show." After that the characters of , Statler & VValdorf, , and The Electric Mayhem Band (featudng Dr. Teeth, , Janice, Floyd and Zoot) were created for the second original pllot titled "The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence." The show aired on March 19, 1975, and contrary to the scandalous name, the premise of "The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence'' was to the rise of sex and violence on television with the Muppets performing a pageant based on the seven deadly sins. ''The Muppet Show" as we know it offlclal!y began in 1976 and was well-received internationally, going on to broadcast in more than 100 countries. After 1981, ''The Muppet was repackaged for syndication, airing on vanous networks, including TNT from 1988-1992, Nickelodeon from 1994-1 and Odyssey from 1999-2000. With the success of 'The Muppet Show,'' the Muppets branched out to the big screen, releasing their first feature film, "," in 1979. The film starred a rnyriad of actors, including , , , , and Paul Vvi!liams. This impressive list of celebrity cast and cameos became the hallmark of ali Muppet films, five of which followed, including "'' (1981 ), 'The Muppets Take Manhattan" (1984), "The Muppet Christmas Carol'' (1992), "Muppet '' (1996) and "" (1999), All six films have signature soundtracks that received countless awards. including an Academy Award~;, nomination for Best Song for "'' and Best Original Score for 'The Muppet t~.;~ovie."

In addition to feature films, Muppet mania continued long after "The Muppet Show" went off the air. Many television specials and documentaries featuring the classic Muppet characters have been produced, as well as arena shows of both "The Muppet Show" and "Muppet Babies," which toured domestically from 1984~ 1989, Muppet Magazine was published from 1983~ 1988 and "The Muppets'' comic strip was syndicated in U.S newspapers from the early to mid 1 980s. Museum exhibits ("The Art of The Muppets," "The World of : Muppets, Monsters & Magic," ''The Vision of Jim Henson" and others) featuring Muppet characters toured domestically and internationally from 1980-2001.

Multiple record albums for 'The Muppet Show,'' ''Muppet Babies" and ail of the Muppet movies have been released worldwide, Hundreds of Muppet books have also been published around the world since 1976.

Throughout the years the Muppets have also produced nurnerous public service announcements and have acted as spokespeople for many causes both domestically and internationally, ranging from The National WHdlife Federation, UNICEF and the Amerlcan Film Institute, to the University of Maryland, the American Library Association and the Better World Society.
