Administrative History:
John McIntyre (1916-2005) was born in Glasgow, educated at Bathgate Academy and then Edinburgh University where he graduated in philosophy and then in divinity. In 1943 he became the minister of the Ayrshire village of Fenwick before leaving Scotland in 1945 to teach theology at St Andrew’s College in the University of Sydney. Rev McIntyre remained in Australia until 1956 when he returned to Scotland to become professor of divinity at New College.
In 1972, he was asked to be interim Moderator in St Giles Cathedral and in 1982-1983 stood as Moderator of the General Assembly. In 1989 he was awarded the CVO.

Dean of the Thistle is an office of the Order of the Thistle, re-established in 1687. The office is normally held by a minister of the Church of Scotland, and forms part of the Royal Household in Scotland. John McIntyre held office from 1974-1989.
Mainly correspondence, also order of service for The Thistle Service and Ceremony for the Installation of the Honorable Lord Cameron and the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry as Knights of the Thistle (1979), an agenda for a meeting of the Thistle Committee, programme for the presentation of the keys of Edinburgh to the Queen (1977) and details of installations to the order.
