Lihat Timothy J. Craig. Japan Pop! Inside the World of Japanese Popular Culture. New York: M.E. Sharpe, Inc, 2000. hal 4-5. 2 Menurut Saya S. Shiarishi, Doraemon membantu memperkenalkan karya-karya populer lainnya ke Indonesia seperti halnya yang terjadi di Jepang. Artikel terkait bisa dilihat di Saya S.

METHOD TO INVESTIGATE FICTIONAL ENTITIES: A CASE OF ISHINOMORI SHOTARO’S “KAMENRIDER BLACK” TV SERIES IN INDONESIA Rizki Musthafa Arisun Japan Culture Lecturer in STBA LIA Jakarta ([email protected]) ABSTRACT This article reports an experiment to pursue appropriate observation method on fictional entities inside popular culture products from Japan: two dimensional characters, fictional characters in a movie. Previous research showed how Indonesian popular culture producers being empowered in production, as fictional entities involved, such as “Hatsune Miku” (HM), a virtual singer persona. This article focused on older cases where media Japan travelled to Indonesia. Back in 1989, a TV action serial "Kamen Rider Black/ Ksatria Baja Hitam" (KRB/KBH) from Japan, was broadcasted by Indonesian local television station RCTI, and dubbed in Indonesian language. The experiment on finding appropriate observation method is conducted by constructing frameworks, imagined as ‘dissecting’ fictional entities into smaller observable parts. The purpose of this paper is to map methods to examine the role of non-human entities under transnational media by evaluating through early stage experiment. • PRESSEINFORMATION Juli 2020 Neues Manga-Museum in Tokio
PRESSEINFORMATION Juli 2020 Neues Manga-Museum in Tokio Nachbau der ehemaligen Künstler-WG von „Astro Boy“-Schöpfer Osamu Tezuka eröffnet als Museum München – 31. Juli 2020.

Proselytization by fans ignited the anime movement in America, despite Japanese copyright holders’ abandonment of the American market. The author presents an historical and legal analysis to demonstrate that, at least in one case spanning two decades, fans’ continual infringement of copyright spurred the progress of commerce and the arts. 1 MIT Japan Program Working Paper Series 04.02 Center for International Studies Massachusetts Institute of Technology Room E38-7th Floor Cambridge, MA 02139 Phone: 617-252-1483 Fax: 617-258-7432 Date of Publication: November 2, 2004 © Sean Leonard 2 Table of Contents 1. The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J.

ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s.

  • Representations of Hiv/Aids in Popular American Comic Books, 1981- 1996
REPRESENTATIONS OF HIV/AIDS IN POPULAR AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS, 1981- 1996 William Richard Avila A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Michael Decker Graduate Faculty Representative William Albertini Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2021 William Richard Avila All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffery Brown, Advisor From 1981-1996, the United States experienced an epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) that held profound implications for issues ranging from civil rights, public education, and sexual mores, to government accountability, public health, and expressions of heterosexism. Popular comic books that broached the subject of HIV/AIDS during the U.S. epidemic elucidate how America’s discourse on the disease evolved in an era when elected officials, religious leaders, legal professionals, medical specialists, and average citizens all struggled to negotiate their way through a period of national crisis. The manner whereby comic book authors, illustrators, and publishers engaged the topic of HIV/AIDS changed over time but, because comic books are an item of popular culture primarily produced for a heterosexual male audience, such changes habitually mirrored the evolution of the nation’s mainstream, heteronormative debates regarding the epidemic and its sociocultural and political implications. Through studying depictions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in popular comic books, alterations in the heterocentric, national discourse emerge revealing how homophobic dismissals of the “gay plague” in the early 1980s gave way to heterosexual panic in the mid-1980s, followed by the epidemic’s reinterpretation as a national tragedy in the late-1980s.
