CLUB U.S.A. (Voice of America)

Broadcasting dates: Neither Hickerson (1996) nor Paulson (2006) mention this program, even Goldin has only one undated program. On his 4th broadcast Feather himself gives ‘1951’ as the year. Program 11 has a handwritten date on the sleeve ‘March 11th’, program 12 has handwritten ‘March 18th’. So if we take that for the date of the first broadcast and resume that this weekly program was broadcast every Sunday, we get the dates below (at least up to Jazz Club # 26). I am not entirely sure about the first and the second broadcast – that should have been December 24th, 1950, and December 31st, 1950. But I can’t imagine they’d start a new program and already postpone the 3rd and 4th program because of Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, so I consider the dates (1950-12-24 and 1950-12-31) are very likely. Beginning with ‘Jazz Club # 40’ I wasn’t able to give proper dates. Obviously there was a gap in summer 1951. In # 41 Feather talks about a ‘1952 version’ of an Ellington title and says, that left the Ellington Band ‘barely two years ago’. Hodges left Ellington early in 1951, last records with Ellington were made in January. This would mean late 1952 for Feather’s 40th broadcast – hard to believe. Used: Tom Lord, The Jazz Discography, CD-ROM 2004 edition.
