They will also have the opportunity to analyze artifacts related to the Black sleeping car porters to gain a better understanding of the men’s daily lives and their contributions to the struggle for labour rights and human rights for Black Canadians. Time Required: 3 – 4 lessons Historical Thinking Concept(s): • Establish historical significance • Use primary source evidence • Identify continuity and change • Analyze cause and consequence • Take historical perspectives Learning Outcomes: Student will: • Comment on the political and social context of African Canadians between 1900 and the Second World War • Examine the role and experiences of Black sleeping car porters • Become familiar with working conditions of sleeping car porters before they became unionized • Investigate primary source documents, images, and artifacts to build historical knowledge • Make inferences about the artifacts relating to Black sleeping car porters • Explain how Canada’s identity has been and continues to be shaped by its global participation • Discuss the struggle for equal human rights by Black Canadians in the twentieth century to the present day Background Information: The Pullman Palace Car Company established the Pullman porter position in 1867. -
Historic Resource Study of Pullman National Monument
Chapter 6 EXISTING CONDITIONS The existing conditions and recent alterations in the Town of Pullman and the factory sites have been addressed well in other documents. The Pullman Historic District Reconnaissance Survey completed in 2013 offers clear and succinct assessments of extant buildings in Pullman. Likewise, the Archaeological Overview & Assessment completed in 2017 covers the current conditions of factory remnants. A draft revised National Historic Landmark nomination for Pullman Historic District, completed in August 1997 and on deposit at Pullman National Monument, includes a list of contributing and non-contributing structures.612 For the purposes of this Historic Resources Report, the existing conditions of built environment cultural resources that are not addressed in the aforementioned documents will be considered briefly for their potential significance for research and interpretation. In addition, this section will consider historical documents valuable for studying change over time in the extant built environment and also strategies for using Pullman’s incredibly rich built environment as primary historical evidence. Figure 6.1 offers a visual map showing the approximate age of extant buildings as well as major buildings missing today that were present on the 1892 Rascher Map. Most obvious from this map are the significant changes in the industrial core. Importantly, many of the 1880s buildings that no longer stand were replaced gradually over the twentieth century at first as part of the Pullman Company’s changing technological needs, then after 1959 as part of deindustrialization and the reinvention of the Calumet region. The vast majority of domestic structures from the Town of Pullman’s original construction survive. -

Saint Paul African American Historic and Cultural Context ABSTRACT Saint Paul’s African American community is long established—rooted, yet dynamic. From their beginnings, Blacks in Minnesota have had tremendous impact on the state’s economy, culture, and political development. Although there has been an African American presence in Saint Paul for more than 150 years, adequate research has not been completed to account for and protect sites with significance to the community. One of the objectives outlined in the City of Saint Paul’s 2009 Historic Preservation Plan is the development of historic contexts “for the most threatened resource types and areas,” including immigrant and ethnic communities (City of Saint Paul 2009:12). The primary objective for development of this Saint Paul African American Historic and Cultural Context Project (Context Study) was to lay a solid foundation for identification of key sites of historic significance and advancing preservation of these sites and the community’s stories. -

SYLVESTER: Because you were supposed to be better than this! The PlaY As the Panama Limited train chugs from Chicago to New Orleans, the passengers and employees anticipate great Pullman service and jiving blues music. Cephas is the third generation of proud Sykes men who have worked all their lives as Pullman porters. Working through discrimination and the Great Depression, his grandfather, Monroe, and his father, Sylvester, have made enough money to send Cephas to college to become a doctor. This summer though Cephas wants to know what it is to be a “working man.” The entire nation is anxiously waiting for the boxing match pitting African- American Heavyweight hero, Joe Louis, against James Braddock. While the “Brown Bomber” fights in the ring, Cephas fights to make his own choices. Can Cephas uphold the Sykes pride and still be his own person? Kimura Draft 1 Dear workshoppers, Thanks so much for taking the time to read this first draft of what I ultimately hope to turn into an article. I’m just starting with this piece, so I’m open to any feedback you might be willing to share. I’m particularly concerned with how the arguments various parts hang together, especially in the final section in which I try to insert this piece into broader literary historical discourses. I’m also interested in how the history I do in this piece is working--if there’s enough or too much and how I connect it to literature. Kevin The Weird Pullman Porter: Race and Antimodernism at the Closing of the Frontier1 The Pullman porter has been an object of enduring scholarly interest because he has played central roles in American histories of race and labor. His characteristic trait is his capacity to efface his humanity. Pullman porters were anonymous; they often answered to “George,” in an homage to the founder of the Pullman Palace Car Company (Tye 2). In the performance of their duties, they essentially became machines rather than people, offering flawless, endlessly repetitive service without producing in their clients the uncomfortable impression that they might have opinions, desires, or other human features. Aiding the white imagination’s image of the Pullman porter as a mass produced automaton was the fact of the racial and class homogeneity of these workers and the strict standards of appearance enforced by their employer (Hall 92, Tye 40). -
Railroad Heritage Sleeping Car Porters
OAKLAND RAILS Railroad Heritage Shipping on the Long Wharf, about 1900 The opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 reduced travel time between the East and West Coasts from as much as four months by sea to just six days. The Central Pacific made Oakland its western terminus. In 1871, the railroad completed the two- mile-long Long Wharf off the city’s western shoreline, where the trains were met by passenger ferries and ocean-going cargo ships. The railroad stimulated Oakland’s rapid growth as a shipping and population center, giving birth to the modern city. Sleeping Car Porters Off-duty porters, about 1915 Among the most respected members of Oakland’s African American community were the Pullman Porters, uniformed atten- dants who staffed the railroad’s luxurious Pullman Sleeping Cars. The Porters provided professional and courteous service on the overland routes. The work was hard, shifts were long, and the pay was low--but the employment was steady. Widely traveled, educated, and knowledgeable, the Porters were esteemed within the community. C. L. Dellums at age 75 In 1925, the Pullman Porters formed a union and began fighting for higher wages and shorter hours. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters--the first African American labor union in the United States--was in the van- guard of the national struggle for equality and civil rights. It also contributed to the rise of the black middle class. In 1937, the union was recognized by the Pullman Company. Oakland resident Cottrell Laurence Dellums (1900-1989), a Pullman Porter, was a leader in organizing the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. -
