When American performance artists use non-Western cultural elements— such as music, dance, or material items—questions of authenticity, identity, and entitlement are raised. Researchers, who often have the benefit of objective distance, tend to feel that appropriation is wrong, that a more essentialist approach is needed. Performers tend to take a “Romantic individualist’s” viewpoint, believing that the creative process and the contribution of their art to humanity as a whole should allow them to take inspiration from any source, regardless of the culture. This thesis is an examination of these stances on cultural appropriation in relation to modern dance, music, and intercultural performance. The focus of the examination is At Last, The Tale of the Bird Belly Princess, Tien-Savi-Tsuru-Chak, a production directed and choreographed by Professor Tammyan Starr, a dance instructor at Bowling Green State University, that incorporated elements of Korean and Balinese music and dance. I begin by situating this production within the history of modern dance and the ideology of intercultural performance. I then consider the continuum created by the Romantic individualist and essentialist poles. Ideas of authenticity, identity, and appropriation are examined in light of these two ideologies. A close analysis of the non-Western costuming, props, music and dance used in Bird Belly Princess provides the opportunity iv for the application of the aforementioned ideas to a specific work. Multiple perspectives on the purpose and perception of Bird Belly Princess are also taken into account. Through close examination of this production, I posit the necessity of examining a single work from many angles in order to understand the various “truths” that it expresses. I also consider the ethnomusicologist’s role in the study of dance; what the ethnomusicologist can learn by understanding dance as a cultural phenomenon. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis could not have been completed without the love and support of many people. The story called for a total of fifteen performers: two Princesses (one narrating, one dancing), four Spiders, five Cranes, three Fish, and a Spider King. The Cranes and Fish also doubled as Stars, Lightning, and Thunder. In the script, the story was divided into six sections. These sections, however, were often renamed by Professor Starr and/or the dancers during rehearsals. Also, dances were added by Professor Starr that were not initially named in the script. For clarity’s sake, I provide a table showing: 1) the sections as divided in the script; 2) each dance performed in the sections; 3) the musical selections used for each dance; and 4) composers for each musical selection. So he steals her away to his home in the Night Sky, where she is kept prisoner and forced to regale him with stories. After the introduction of the Spider King and his four Spider minions (the Spidettes), the Dancing Princess and Stars enact the magical night when “a shooting star flashed through

    Types of Dance Styles International Standard Ballroom Dances Ballroom Dance: Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertaining and elite styles of dancing. In the earlier days, ballroom dancewas only for the privileged class of people, the socialites if you must. This style of dancing with a partner, originated in Germany, but is now a popular act followed in varied dance styles. Today, the popularity of ballroom dance is evident, given the innumerable shows and competitions worldwide that revere dance, in all its form. This dance includes many other styles sub-categorized under this. There are many dance techniques that have been developed especially in America. The International Standard recognizes around 10 styles that belong to the category of ballroom dancing, whereas the American style has few forms that are different from those included under the International Standard. Tango: It definitely does take two to tango and this dance also belongs to the American Style category. Like all ballroom dancers, the male has to lead the female partner. The choreography of this dance is what sets it apart from other styles, varying between the International Standard, and that which is American. Waltz: The waltz is danced to melodic, slow music and is an equally beautiful dance form. The waltz is a graceful form of dance, that requires fluidity and delicate movement. When danced by the International Standard norms, this dance is performed more closely towards each other as compared to the American Style. Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style, gives a dancer flexibility to combine slow and fast dance steps together.

    3671 ARGENTINE TANGO (GOLD DANCE TEST) Music - Tango 4/4 Tempo - 24 measures of 4 beats per minute - 96 beats per minute Pattern - Set Duration - The time required to skate 2 sequences is 1:10 min. The Argentine Tango should be skated with strong edges and considerable “élan”. Good flow and fast travel over the ice are essential and must be achieved without obvious effort or pushing. The dance begins with partners in open hold for steps 1 to 10. The initial progressive, chassé and progressive sequences of steps 1 to 6 bring the partners on step 7 to a bold LFO edge facing down the ice surface. On step 8 both partners skate a right forward outside cross in front on count 1 held for one beat. On step 9, the couple crosses behind on count 2, with a change of edge on count 3 as their free legs are drawn past the skating legs and held for count 4 to be in position to start the next step, crossed behind for count 1. On step 10 the man turns a counter while the woman executes another cross behind then change of edge. This results in the partners being in closed hold as the woman directs her edge behind the man as he turns his counter. Step 11 is strongly curved towards the side of the ice surface. At the end of this step the woman momentarily steps onto the RFI on the “and” between counts 4 and 1 before skating step 12 that is first directed toward the side barrier.

Provine School of Music This thesis is the result of seventeen months’ field work as a dance and pansori student at the Washington Korean Dance Company studio. It examines the studio experience, focusing on three levels of interaction. First, I describe participants’ interactions with each other, which create a strong studio community and a women’s “Korean space” at the intersection of culturally hybrid lives. Second, I examine interactions with the physical challenges presented by these arts and explain the satisfaction that these challenges can generate using Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “optimal experience” or “flow.” Third, I examine interactions with discourse on the meanings and histories of these arts. I suggest that participants can find deeper significance in performing these arts as a result of this discourse, forming intellectual and emotional bonds to imagined people of the past and present. The residential areas occupy the largest swath of the built-up portion of cities, and therefore catch the eye of the beholder above all else. Houses, houses, everywhere. Big houses, little houses, apartment houses; sterile new tract houses, picturesque Victorian houses, snug little stucco homes; gargantuan manor houses, houses tucked into leafy hillsides, and clusters of town houses. Such residential zones establish the basic tone of urban life in the metropolis. By looking at residential landscapes around the city, one can begin to capture the character of the place and its people. We can mark out five residential landscapes in the Bay Area. The most telling for the cultural tone of the region is a middle class suburbia of a peculiar sort: the ecotopian middle landscape. The title is inspired by Bildbeschreibung (Explosion of memory/description of an image) by Heiner Muller. " What could be the travel from the self to the other? Imagine to face portraits of characters that carry multidentity-stories: from the old to the new world, from the factual to the fictional, from the undead past to the speculative future. A delirium embracing the cosmic world. This travel will be colorful, hypnotic, engaging, pushing the spectator into unconscious meandering and disorientation." For their first exhibition in Italy, Florenty and Türkowsky have composed a work made up of video projections, sounds, glows and shadows, marking an important first step in the research currently underway after the great project Through Somnambular Laws (2011) toward a new series of works. Elise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky. Since the beginning of their collaboration in 2005 Elise Florenty - with a background in visual arts and film - and Marcel Türkowsky - with a background in philosophy, ethnomusicology and, later, visual art – have shared their passion for the power of language through songs, writing and instructions.
