Tommy Gaither Head Coach

Tommy Gaither en ters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Basketba ll E a gles with h is system firmly in place. They found such a person in the 39-year old Gaither. Gaither, a native of Fort Mill, S.C., spent four seasons at Baptist College in Charleston, S.C., accumulating a 70-46 record and becoming the school's all-time winningest coach. His last two seasons at Baptist, Gaither led the Buccaneers to back-to-back 21-9 seasons, capturing the Big South Conference regular season and tournament championships both years. He was named the Big "The Tommy Gaither Radio Show" South Coach of the Year in 1985-86. Gaither earned a general college diploma from Mitchell College in 1967. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clemson in 1969 and a master's degree from Clemson in 1977. He began his coaching career at Indian Land High Tommy Gaither's School, then moved on to Berkeley High School, and 1991 Operation: Basketball Camp to Lower Richland High School. Tommy Johnson Assistant Coach Tommy Johnson, a 39 year old native of Florence, S. C., is in his first season with the Eagles. Johnson came to MSU after serving 10 years as head basketball coach at West Florence (S.C.) High School where his teams won three region titles, three region tournament titles and a state championship. In 1986, he was named South Carolina High School Coach of the Year. At West Florence, he coached current MSU Eagle David Derozier. Prior to becoming head coach at West Florence, he spent six years at Wilson High School. Johnson attended McClenaghan High School in Florence. He earned a bachelor's degree from Francis Marion College in 1973 and a master's degree from Webster University in 1984. Johnson is married to the former Judy Plask of Pottstown, Pa. They have one son, Lee (4).

Allan Hatcher Assistant Coach Allan Hatcher, formerly an outstanding high school coach in both West Virginia and Kentucky, is in his first season as an assistant basketball coach at Morehead State. Hatcher joined the MSU staff after spending the 1989-90 season on the basketball staff at Western Kentucky. Prior to joining the Hilltopper program, he served as head coach at Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., for six seasons. He took his team to Kentucky's "Sweet 16" on four occasions. From 1977 to 1983, Hatcher spent six seasons as head coach at Williamson (W.Va.) High School. He led his team to the West Virginia AA State Championship in 1982-83. His 12-year record as a high school coach is 262-72. He earned a bachelor's degree from Marshall in 1974 and a master's degree from Marshall in 1984. Hatcher is a native of Logan, W. Va., and attended Logan High School. Hatcher is married to the former P enny Burke of Portsmouth, Ohio, and has three children, Mark Allan (19), Chase (13) and Wesley Kane (7) years. 8 Eagle Basketball '90-91

Merle Kidwell Graduate Assistant Merle Kidwell, a Vanceburg, Ky., native and former stand­ out athlete at Lewis County High School, is in his first season at Morehead State. Kidwell comes to MSU from Shawnee State, where last I season he served as assistant basketball coach and sports information director. Following an outstanding athletic career at Lewis County, he played one season of basketball at Shawnee State, then a junior college. He then transferred to Otterbein College where he served two years as a student assistant basketball coach. Kidwell, the son of long-time Lewis County basketball and baseball coach Gary Kidwell, earned a bachelor's degree in English from Otterbein in 1989.
