Newly-Designed Student Tailgating Lot In an effort to enhance game day for students who prefer to drive themselves to the stadium, a new student-only parking lot has been created. Located adjacent to the student bus area, UConn students can now park in a student- designated lot for only $10 per game (a $5 savings off game day parking). HELPING HAND: STUDENT Game #1 • Sept. 1, 2016 Rushing No Gain Loss Net TD Lg DESIGNS PROSTHETIC LIMB

Campus Scene hen mechanical engineering student Stephen Hawes was a kid, he liked to play with Legos. But he loved to fold origami, creating whatever he could invent out of reams of Post-it-sized square paper. SHIRREFFS 20 114 19 95 0 35 “Legos had all the instructions, so they didn’t really do it for me,” Whe says. Instead, Hawes wanted to create something on his own. Hawes was awarded a UConn IDEA grant to build a prototype of a customizable, 3-D-printed prosthetic arm and hand that utilizes sensors to move the prosthesis. Custom-made prosthetics can be pricey, in part, because of the technology, materials, and expertise required to create a mold and cast a socket for the prosthetic. But Hawes’ prototype uses 3-D scanning, like the kind found in a $40 Xbox Kinect motion sensor, to create a model for the socket. The Kinect software is free, JOHNSON 15 69 4 65 2 21 and even the highest-end consumer 3-D printer costs a fraction of what a typical prosthetic might. “Especially for kids who are running around on the playground breaking parts, they can go home and say, ‘Mom, I broke this part,’” Hawes said. “Mom can say, ‘OK,’ run the 3-D printer, and then they have a new colored hand the next day.” Hawes said the financial support provided through the IDEA program enabled him to make progress on a project he’s passionate about in a fraction of the time it would’ve taken otherwise. NEWSOME 15 48 8 40 1 8 Hawes will be working with an amputee to take his project out of the prototype phase and create a usable, customized prosthesis for a real person. Eventually, Hawes plans to release all the files associated with the project online so that others can improve upon what he’s started. “Being able to release that to other people that have more experience in prosthetic hand design, or whatever the case may be, allows it to progress a lot faster,” he added. “I’m looking forward to seeing how what I have done helps impact that community and move things forward.” RAY REID AND HIS HUSKIES HAVE HIGH Passing Com-Att-Int Yds TD Lg HOPES FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT RETURN #20 OBI MELIFONWU By Phil Chardis, Assistant Director — UConn Athletic Communications Men’s Soccer Preview he UConn men’s soccer team kicked off its season last UConn senior safety has become a student of the game during his Husky career weekend with matches against Iona and Nebraska- Omaha and are back on the home pitch of Joseph SHIRREFFS 16-23-0 162 0 24 J.
