Korean movie star, Young-hee played with some fire by Min-hee Kim On the Beach at Night Alone an affair with a married director. She seems to be rather lost as the affair ends as she vacations in Hamburg Germany. As the film progresses she goes about with her friends back in to pick up the pieces. The film is strictly a stream of conciousnous story with Young-hee coming off the breakup with a very sharp tongue and demeaner. There are many conversations and Young-hee and the director do finally meet in the movie, but it's bittersweet. At times she begins to rant, she's very angry, but I didn't see the film as most review it, I don't think it was about the director. I see him only as a catalyst to Young-hee who questions have outstripped her answers. In the end I believe it was more her doing than his. He seemed to have been caught in her vortex. She feels lost but at that edge is something far more. Outside of common reason, she'll have to find her way back if that's her intention. This isn't a movie that most would jump for, be sure you enjoy a more sedate and introspective film before jumping in. Mostly talk and On the Beach at Night Alone. More From Metacritic. After an affair with a married man, celebrated actress Yeong Hee decides to take some time out. She travels to the far-off, foreign city of Hamburg. In a conversation with a friend she asks herself if her lover will follow her and whether he misses her as much as she misses him. During her long walks through wintry parks and along riverbanks she attempts to become clear about her feelings and desires. The question about the On the Beach at Night Alone of love in our lives is a common theme in all the films of Hong Sang Soo, and yet the answers to this question always appear to just slip from our grasp. Back in Korea, Younghee meets some old friends in the coastal town of Gangneung. Under the influence of alcohol Yeong Hee provokes, insults and angers the others. Their conversations get more and more out of hand, giving vent to minor and major realisations and truths. Afterwards, Yeong Hee withdraws to a deserted beach. It seems as if she can only truly find herself in nature. Edit Translation. MDL v6 en. TV Shows. Feeds Lists Forums Contributors. Edit this Page Edit Information. Watch Trailer. Buy on Amazon. The South Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo is both prolific and consistent. His movies tend to feature chronological displacement, romantic disaffection, startling zooms and the consumption of many bottles of soju. Hong presented at festivals this year, is split into two parts — the first set in Hamburg, Germany, the second in the South Korean seaside city of Gangneung — and includes an extended, awkward, zoom-punctuated scene of drunken recrimination. The focus of that scene, and of every other in the film, is Kim On the Beach at Night Alone, who has worked frequently On the Beach at Night Alone Mr. Hong, often playing a young woman involved, at least potentially, with a man who is sometimes a filmmaker. In March, following a great deal of rumor and scandal in the Korean news media, Mr. Hong and Ms. Kim admitted to their own affairwhich contributed to the end of Mr. His explorations of the miscommunications between men and women can turn into meditations, at times acute, at times coy, on the nature of cinema and the reliability On the Beach at Night Alone narrative. The problem for Young-hee Ms. In the first, she is in Germany with an older, female friend Seo Young-hwawandering through wintry parks, visiting acquaintances On the Beach at Night Alone talking about and around the scandalous love affair back home in Korea. Back home, her mood is less melancholy and more confrontational. She is sarcastic with old friends and ferocious when drunk, pushing away sympathy with one hand and inviting it with the other. The relationship between the two halves of the film, like every other relationship in it, remains somewhat enigmatic. What the audience experiences as before and after could be two versions of the same story. Or one could be a fantasy contained within the other, though it might be hard to say which is which. Its characters are subject to recognizable emotions that they struggle to express clearly and transparently, helped along by a musical soundtrack heavy with Schubert and by the close attention of Mr. Kim is simultaneously an ordinary woman and a melodramatic heroine, her performance made more layered and intriguing by the intimation that she may be playing herself.
