  • NATHAN LYONS: Final Chapter
NATHAN LYONS: Final Chapter March 27 - April 2, 2017 Reception: Friday March 31, 7-10pm Affirmation Arts 523 W 37th Street In honor of the renowned photographer, educator, lecturer, author, and curator Nathan Lyons, Bruce Silverstein is pleased to present, in association with Affirmation Arts, Nathan Lyons: Final Chapter. This exhibition marks the first occasion that this legendary artist’s color photographs will be seen by the public. It represents the fifth and final installment of a photographic opus spanning five decades, illustrating the artist’s intention of creating and transmitting a unique visual language through photography. This exclusive first look will be a prelude to his upcoming exhibition at the George Eastman Museum in 2019. Nearly 50 years have passed since the publication of his seminal book, Notations in Passing (1971), born out of his larger, extraordinary body of work bearing the same title. The images comprising this now-iconic compilation would be the artist’s first series of ‘snapshots’. This series sought to document the American ethos of 1962-1974 through the ubiquitous vernacular elements dispersed throughout the suburban landscape. Lyons would often focus on specific advertisements, posters, signage, drawings, and graffiti–lending a voice to the otherwise fading, forgotten script. Notations in Passing was also groundbreaking in its introduction of the artist's keen interest in photographic sequencing, often laying out seemingly disparate images in pairs, allowing a range of meaning to emerge through such juxtaposition. The snapshot, not as product but as process. Unpretentious and yet important, aspiring to nothing but a notation in passing. Things as they are, or what we make of them? In attempting to let objects be, objects and object spaces, to form simultaneously a neutral yet actively observational position, to combine ‘non-photographs’ as photographs.

  • Ray Metzker Philadelphia and Atlantic City: Photographs from the 1960S
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LOCKS GALLERY 215.629.1000 / 215.629.3868 fax [email protected] Ray Metzker Philadelphia and Atlantic City: Photographs from the 1960s May 18–June 30, 2005 Opening Reception: Friday, May 20, 5:30–7:30pm Gallery Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–6pm Philadelphia, 1963, gelatin silver print, 8 x 10 inches April 12, 2005, Philadelphia, PA – An exhibition of 1960s black and white photographs by Ray Metzker will be on view at Locks Gallery from May 18 through June 30, 2005. There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on Friday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Gallery admission is free and open to the public. This exhibition comprises over thirty photographs, including a number of vintage prints, from Metzker's photographic series of the 1960s. The photographs selected juxtapose the artist's familiar images of Philadelphia street scenes - with their dramatic interplay of deep shadow, selective highlights and precise composition - against surreal images of sleeping beachgoers - vacant figures scattered across an empty ground - in Atlantic City. The bright scenes from the Atlantic City beach images appear in stark contrast to the dark, noirish images of the urban landscape captured by Metzker in his photo- graphs of Philadelphia. Ray Metzker completed his graduate studies in 1959 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where he studied with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His earliest photographs from this time demonstrate the artist's abiding interest in technical experimentation and formal invention, traits indicative of the Bauhaus tradition to which Metzker belongs. In 1962, the artist moved to Philadelphia, where he lives and works today, and immediately began photographing his new urban environment.

But that is still not the most direct use of lettering, which can be found, in [William] Klein’s work, as a privileged element of reality: in advertising panels, city signals, graffiti, as STOP or PARKING or FREE or SMILE, signs that integrate it in other messages. It can be found in the fireworks of Times Square, colourful, luminous, moving, a cinema before the letter — it was by conjugating the latent cin- ema reality with that of the camera that Klein, in his Broadway by Light of 1958, discovered pop art. .” — Chris Marker* Substitute book for character and reading with collecting and Chris Marker could be discussing the relationship between collectors and their books: the choice of a book and the space surrounding it is part of the act of collecting, humbly but closely linked to the text itself. The holy trinity of photography reference books, THE BOOK OF 101 BOOks, THE OPEN BOOK, and THE PHOTOBOOK: A HistORY (vol- umes 1 and 2) have dictated collecting tastes and set agendas for Photo- book collecting since 2001. This catalog presents many titles from these anthologies while humbling suggesting some lesser-known material for elevation into that “privileged element of reality.” “The trouble with people like [Klein] is that we tend to cut them into pieces and to leave each piece to the specialists: a film to the film critic, a photo- graph to the photographic expert, a picture to the art pundit, a sketchbook to nobody in particular.

Metzker / Courtesy Les Douches la Galerie, Paris Les Douches la Galerie is pleased to present When hands weave the light, our second exhibition dedicated to the work of Ray K. Metzker. Composed of some fifty prints taken from various series, this exhibition highlights his sustained interest in experimentation. A virtuoso of light and absolute master of his prints, Metzker pushes the formal boundaries of the photographic medium as well as those of American urban space. These photographs, taken between 1957 and 1982, offer a unique visual journey through the streets of Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and several European cities. He has steadily sought new vision, asking, “Why does new vision matter? Do I need this? Does it increase my capacity to care? No, but it increases my capacity to think.”1 For Metzker, the struggle for new vision is an act against inertia and stillness and toward intensity and knowledge. (…) Each new series of photographs begins with a change in his preoccupations about photography or with a change in what – or where – he is photographing.

A fixture in the best-known institutions, his work, consisting exclusively of black and white images, is completely representative of an entire generation of profoundly experimental photographers. Born in 1931, Metzker was deeply influenced by his studies at Chicago’s Institute of Design.
