IUCN WCPA Mountain UPDATE # 109 Editor: Gillian Anderson [email protected] Identification of Global Priorities for New Mountain Protected and Conserved Areas: IUCN WCPA Mountain Specialist Group Why undertake a Project to identify unprotected mountains? The world’s system of protected and conserved areas includes many outstanding areas within the Earth’s mountainous landscape. Excluding Antarctica, about 19% of mountain areas globally are protected or conserved. Nevertheless, significant mountain areas are not adequately protected, and many mountain ranges are completely unprotected. Of over 6000 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in mountains worldwide, 40.4% are entirely unprotected. As the world conservation movement advocates to expand the global coverage of protected areas over the next decade toward 30%, identifying priorities for new mountain protected and conserved areas will be most effective if it takes a Simien Mountains Ethiopia. photo: strategic approach to ensure areas of highest ecological value and most in need of Marc Foggin protection are identified. A number of people from the Mountain Specialist Group have come together to develop a paper that describes in detail the project and a six step decision support tool. Tibet. photo: peopleinnature Six Step Decision Support Tool The Mountain Specialist Group paper introduces a six step decision support tool (with tables and links to relevant data) for identifying and prioritising candidate areas for conserving mountain ecosystems, species and habitats. The tool begins with an analysis of the adequacy of the level of protection of mountain Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). It then quantitatively assesses if the inadequately protected mountain KBA is also characterised by: inadequately protected mountain ecosystems, biodiversity hotspots, red-listed species and/or communities, Conservation of nature by indigenous other forms of effective conservation i.e. ICCAs & OECMs, and nomadic tribes of Iran photo: ICCA being within a Developing Country Consortium & CENESTA It then guides regional teams through qualitative assessments of other values to develop regionally ranked lists of priority areas to give heightened consideration for protection or conservation. IUCN WCPA Mountain Update # 109 Editor: Gillian Anderson [email protected] 2 Identification of Global Priorities for New Mountain Protected and Conserved Areas: IUCN WCPA Mountain Specialist Group Mountain Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) Protection There are many reasons why it is vital to protect and conserve new mountain areas but identifying unprotected Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) is a good starting point in a strategic and stepped process. The graph below shows breakdown of protection of mountain KBAs. There are over 6,109 identified mountain KBAs Sierra Nevada Mountains USA photo: peopleinnature In addition to KBAs; levels of protection of mountain ecosystems, biodiversity hotspots, IUCN red listed ecosystems and species and a range of other values including OECM’s have been taken into account when identifying priorities. Biodiversity Hotspots Around the world, 36 areas qualify as biodiversity hotspots (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund 2019). They represent areas of very high biodiversity value under threat. Covering just 2.4% of Earth’s land surface they contain more than 50% of the world’s plant species as endemics and nearly 43% of bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian species as endemics. About half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots are in mountainous regions. WWF IUCN WCPA Mountain Update # 109 Editor: Gillian Anderson [email protected] 3 Identification of Global Priorities for New Mountain Protected and Conserved Areas: IUCN WCPA Mountain Specialist Group Protection of Mountain Biomes and Ecosystems Mountain Biomes The protection of mountains at the biome level gives an indication of relative occurrence and protection of mountain values at a broad scale prior to examining the protection at the ecosystem level. For example Mountain Grasslands make up 15% of the terrestrial landscape but are only 9.6% protected and Mountain Forests even though they have 50% coverage are only 18.7% protected. Mountain Biomes: Proportion of each biome in the mountain landscape, globally (central column), and each biome’s Level of Protection (right-most edge), (not including croplands or settlements): (based on Sayre et al. 2020). (Note that the diagram is a guide and not accurate to scale) Mountain Ecosystems There are 278 natural or semi-natural World terrestrial Ecosystems. Of those, there are 77 mountain ecosystems that cover 32% in area of the world’s natural or semi-natural ecosystems (Sayre et al. 2020). The mountain ecosystems most comprehensively protected by proportion are: Cool Temperate Moist Snow and Ice on Mountains (60%) Polar Moist Snow and Ice on Mountains (43%) Boreal Moist Snow and Ice on Mountains (40%) The mountain ecosystems least protected by proportion are: Boreal Desert Sparsely or Non-vegetated on Mountains (0%) Boreal Desert Grassland on Mountains (0%) and Cool Temperate Desert Grassland on Mountains (0.006%). Moisture/Vegetation classes Grouping the mountain ecosystems into 15 Moisture/Vegetation classes provides a mid level perspective of the protection of biodiversity characteristics between biomes and ecosystems. (USGS) Determining Adequacy of Protection: Protected and Conserved Areas The validation of the protection or conservation status is an important step in the process. Along with legally established protected areas, conserved ICCAs—Territory for Life and OECMs (Other Effective areas may be considered as incorporating all defined areas Conservation Measures) that effectively achieve conservation in situ. This article examines available literature to date and includes images of all four surviving specimens that can lay claim to Irish provenance. [This is an update to the article written in February 2014]. The presence of the Mountain Ringlet (Erebia epiphron) in Ireland has been a topic of much interest to Lepidopterists for decades, partly because of the small number of specimens that are reputedly Irish. The Irish Mountain Ringlet is truly the stuff of legend and many articles have been written over the years, including the excellent summary by Chalmers-Hunt (1982). The purpose of this article is to examine all relevant literature and, in particular, the various points of view that have been expressed over the years. This article also includes images of all four surviving specimens that can lay claim to Irish provenance and some of the sites mentioned in conjunction with these specimens are shown in Figure 1. Creag Meagaidh is a complex massif, with numerous mountain tops and an extensive high summit plateau edged by a dramatic series of ice-carved corries and gullies. The Reserve extends from the highest of the mountain tops to the shores of Loch Laggan. The plateau is carpeted in moss-heath and is an important breeding ground for dotterel. The corries support unusual artic- alpine plants and the lower slopes have scattered patches of ancient woodland dominated by birch. Located 45 kilometres (km) northeast of Fort William and covering nearly 4,000 hectares (ha), the Reserve is owned and managed by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Creag Meagaidh has been a NNR since 1986 and during the last twenty years SNH has worked to restore natural habitats, particularly woodland, on the Reserve. Like much of the Highlands, the vegetation has been heavily grazed for centuries, so it was decided to reduce the number of grazing animals by removing sheep and culling red deer. The aim was not to eliminate grazing animals altogether, but to keep numbers at a level that allowed the habitats, especially the woodland, to recover.

Both species have been reared to maturity from eggs laid by females caught in the wild. Out of accord with hitherto attainments, both species preferred Festuca supina as the main host plant (in choice experiments, E. epiphron preferred Avenella flexuosa). In rearing experiments, the species overwintered only once and finished their development within a one-year period. Highest mortality of individuals appeared during overwintering of L2- [E. sudetica) and L3-larvae (E epiphron). Lindenmayer1,2 1 Fenner School of Environment and Society, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, 2 ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract The ski industry is often perceived as having a negative impact on sensitive alpine and subalpine communities. However, empirical evidence of such impacts is lacking. We reviewed the available literature from the last 35 years to quantify the reported effects of winter recreation on faunal communities. Overall, using one-sample binomial tests (‘sign tests’) we found that the effects of all types of winter recreation-related disturbances (i.e. ski runs, resort infrastructure and winter tourism) were more likely to be negative or have no effect, than be positive for wildlife. More specifically, in Europe, where the majority of the available research was conducted, the impacts of winter recreation were most often negative for fauna. In terms of specific taxa, birds and to a lesser extent mammals and arthropods, responded negatively to disturbance. Results from our meta-analysis confirmed the results from our binomial tests. Richness, abundance and diversity of fauna were lower in areas affected by winter recreation when compared with undisturbed areas. For most regions and taxa, however, empirical evidence remains too limited to identify clear impacts of winter recreation. We therefore conclude that the majority of ski resorts are operating in the absence of knowledge needed to inform effective strategies for biodiversity conservation and ecologically-sound management.

Butterfly List See Butterflies of Bulgaria website (Details below) Introduction Bulgaria is situated in eastern Europe with its eastern border running along the Black Sea coast. It is separated from Romania for much of its northern border by the River Danube. It shares its western border with Serbia and Macedonia, and its southern border with Greece and Turkey. Bulgaria has a land area of almost 111,000 sq km (smaller than England but bigger than Scotland) and a declining human population of 7.15 million (as of 2015), 1.5 million of which live in the capital city, Sofia. It is very varied in both climate, topography and habitats. Substantial parts of the country are mountainous, particularly in the west, south-west and central ‘spine’ of the country and has the highest mountain in the Balkan Mountains (Musala peak in the Rila Mountains, 2925m) (Map 1). Almost 70% of the land area is above 200m and over 27% above 600m. About 40% of the country is forested and this is likely to increase through natural regeneration due to the abandonment of agricultural land. Following nearly 500 years under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria was independent for just a few years from 1908 before coming under the domination of the soviet communist regime in 1946.
