Completed by all students in the final year of the degree, this course gives students an opportunity to negotiate a 150-hour practicum experience aligned with the student’s academic and professional interests within the sport, recreation and health industry. Each student initiates, negotiates, develops, refines, implements, and ultimately reports upon a comprehensive project of benefit to their host organisation. Therefore the ‘co-op’ becomes a three-way venture between the student, a sport, recreation or health organisation and an academic supervisor. Each year the students become involved with numerous organisations, and the contribution to the community is a credit to the students, the hosting organisations and EIT. This booklet is designed to present summaries of the Whakawatea, Industry Cooperative projects for 2016. We hope you find it informative, interesting and motivating, whether reading it as a potential student, an interested industry partner, stakeholder, or a current student looking for inspiration for your own industry cooperative project.

YOUTH DIRECTORY The Youth Directory was originally produced by the Youth One Stop Shop (‘YOSS’) in 1995. It is not a complete listing of all the agencies and organisations that work with young people in Palmerston North – but a list of community groups that we use as referral sources. On request from community groups YOSS in co-operation with START, have made this information available and it is important that it is used as a living document, needing amendments and additions. Please feel free to photocopy and hand the Youth Directory on to friends and colleagues. • A 40 Year History
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association National Secondary School Cross Country Championships A 40 Year History Introduction The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association is proud to publish a forty- year history of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. Participation in the event between 1974 and 2013 totals well over 10,000 athletes from all but a handful of schools from around the country. With an annual involvement of over 1000 students it has become one of the largest secondary school sporting events in New Zealand. The idea for this document was born during the 1995 NZSSCC Championships in Masterton. At this time (before the internet), results were published in a hard copy booklet. In this particular year the first three place getters in the individual, and three and six person team categories were published for the first twenty-one years of the events history. This accompanied the full set of 1995 results. After this event, the majority of results were published electronically. Unfortunately, many of these results were lost in the mid to late nineties because there was no dedicated NZSSAA website. Sincere thanks need to be given to Don Chadderton for providing the first twenty years’ of results. Without these early results a significant part of athletics New Zealand’s history would have eventually been forgotten. These include the 1974 performance of Alison Rowe, who would later go on to win both the 1981 Boston and New York marathons. As well as Burnside High School’s 1978 performance in the junior boys event where they completed the perfect three-man score of six points.

WHAKATANGATA KIA KAHA: TOITŪ TE WHAKAPAPA, TOITŪ TE TUAKIRI, TOITŪ TE MANA – AN EXAMINATION OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF TE AUTE COLLEGE TO MĀORI ADVANCEMENT. A THESIS PRESENTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION AT MASSEY UNIVERSITY, PALMERSTON NORTH, NEW ZEALAND. JAMES PHILIP HECTOR GRAHAM 2009 i ABSTRACT The thesis examines the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement by exploring the whakapapa of Te Aute College and the brand that has developed out of the school’s whakapapa from its beginnings in 1854 prior to major European settlement in the Hawkes Bay through to the 21st century. In doing so, the notion of whakapapa is used to reveal the layers of tradition, history, connections, narratives, achievements and setbacks that have enabled the realisation of Māori potential and the ability of Te Aute College to sustain a contribution to the advancement of Māori. This thesis contends that the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement stems from its whakapapa and its brand that is unequivocally Te Aute in focus and character. An Indigenous Māori research paradigm, a whakapapa research methodology, provides the context for researching Te Aute College, the basis of this thesis. The thesis also explores whakapapa as a tool that can be used as a legitimate research framework when engaging in Māori research.
