YIKA-VWAZA TRUST RESEARCH STUDY REPORT N (2017/18) Vascular Plant Survey of Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Malawi By Sopani Sichinga ([email protected]) September , 2019 ABSTRACT In 2018 – 19, a survey on vascular plants was conducted in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is located in the north-western Malawi, covering an area of about 986 km2. Based on this survey, a total of 461 species from 76 families were recorded (i.e. 454 Angiosperms and 7 Pteridophyta). Of the total species recorded, 19 are exotics (of which 4 are reported to be invasive) while 1 species is considered threatened. The most dominant families were Fabaceae (80 species representing 17. 4%), Poaceae (53 species representing 11.5%), Rubiaceae (27 species representing 5.9 %), and Euphorbiaceae (24 species representing 5.2%). The annotated checklist includes scientific names, habit, habitat types and IUCN Red List status and is presented in section 5. i ACKNOLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, let me thank the Nyika–Vwaza Trust (UK) for funding this work. Accepted 19 October, 2012 Crossopteryx febrifuga (Afzel.) Benth. (Rubiaceae) widely used in Northern Nigeria for management of trypanosomiasis, malaria and pain, has been previously shown to possess analgesic, anti-pyretic and anti- plasmodial effects. In the present study, acute and sub-acute toxicity studies of the methanolic stem bark extract of C. febrifuga were carried out in rats. Using modified lorkes (1983) method. In the sub acute toxicity study, 4 groups of 5 rats per group were used. Group 1 rats (control) received normal 10 ml normal saline/kg body weight while rats in groups 2, 3 and 4 were given daily doses of 250,500 and 1000 mg extract/kg body weight for 28 days. The effect of the extracts on feed intake, water intake and body weight changes, haematological and biochemical parameters as well as histological studies of vital organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, brain, spleen and gonads) were assessed. -

A questionnaire-guided interview of the indigenous people by random sampling was done with the help of an interpreter during a survey of the district. Fifty-five (55) respondents participated in the study. The respondents comprised of 25% traditional medical practitioners, 15% herb-sellers and 15% rural elders. Fifty-one (51) plants species of 32 families were documented. Fabaceae had the highest representation of seven (14%) plant species used for the treatment of dysentery; some other families were Asphodelaceae, Apiaceae, Geraniaceae, Anacardiaceae, Bignoniaceae, Ebenaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Hyacinthaceae, Asclepiadiaceae, Acanthaceae, Asteraceae, Balanophaceae, Celstraceae, Convolvulaceae, Cornaceae, Iridaceae, and Hydronaceae. The medicinal plants with the highest frequency of prescription were Hydnora africana and Alepidea amatymbica. The plants were used singly or in combination in recipes. Leaves (28%) had the highest use-value of plant parts, followed by the roots (24%), bark (22%) and the whole plant (9%). Methods of preparation of recipes were decoction, infusion and tincture. -

OLOWOKUDEJO Department of Botany, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos Nigeria *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Vessels, parenchyma and ray cells of eighteen woody plant species belonging to 14 families (8 Orders) in Nigeria were studied using light microscopy. Configuration of ray cells, vessel diameter, pitting pattern of the vessels and parenchyma position in relation to the vessel pores are useful taxonomically and they can be linked to the various uses of the woods. Multiseriate ray cells were common in the Order Gentianales e.g. Alstonia congensis, (Apocynaceae) and Mitragyna ciliata (Rubiaceae). Family Fabaceae e.g. Brachystegia eurycoma and Piptadeniastrum africanum have paratracheal parenchyma, absence of cell inclusions and solitary or clustered vessels in common. Order Lamiales e.g. Family Lamiaceae: Tectona grandis and Boraginaceae: Cordia millenii have homogenous ray cells and banded paratracheal parenchyma with no inclusions. These characters may contribute to understanding the incertae sedis situation surrounding appropriate placement of Boraginaceae in an Order. Cleistopholis patens (Annonaceae) and Pycnanthus angolensis (Myristicaeae) in the Order Magnoliales have scalariform vessels and multiseriate ray cells, usually with some inclusions. Order Malpighiales e.g. Anthostema aubryanum and Mallotus oppositifolus (Euphorbiaceae) and Lophira alata (Ochnaceae) have apo- or paratracheal parenchyma and also possess inclusions in the ray cells and vessels while absence of cell inclusions distinguishes the family Malvaceae (Ceiba petandra and Triplochiton scleroxylon) from Sterculiaceae (Mansonia altissima and Pterygota macrocarpa). The saw dust of Gmelina (Gmelina arborea), Eku (Brachystegia euricoma) and Mahogany (Entandrophragma cylindricum) was collected in a saw mill in Ore and used to produce ethanol by hydrolysis and fermentation processes. The density of each of the wood species was thereafter determined as 570 kg/m3, 750 kg/cm3 and 600 kg/cm3 respectively. The yield of ethanol from Eku, Mahogany and Gmelina wood was determined as 50.61 g/l per 100 g of dry sawdust, 55.43 g/l per 100 g of dry sawdust and 53.01 g/l per 100 g of dry sawdust respectively. The density of the ethanol produced from the wood of Eku, Mahogany and Gmelina was 0.8033 g/cm3, 0.7088 g/cm3, and 0.8033 g/cm3 respectively. These results were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and compared with conventional ethanol. The ANOVA result shows no significant difference among the ethanol yield and ethanol density obtained from the three wood species and that of the conventional ethanol. The ionic constituents of the ethanol of the three wood biomass was analyzed using Furrier Transform Infrared Spectrometric Analyzer (FTIR) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Analyzer (AAS). -

So far, no studies have investigated the ethnomedical surveys to record plants used for both treatments of diabetes and arterial hypertension and their common derived manifestations. The objective of the present study was to collect and document information on herbal remedies traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes and arterial hypertension and their signs, symptoms and complications in Cameroon. Detailed botanical prospection and ethnopharmacological thorough preparation was conducted nearby 1131 interviewers from 58 tribes of Cameroon, in a random distribution developed in [1]. In total, 71 species of plants belonging to 58 genera in 30 families were reported to be used in the preparation of the herbal remedies. Plants that include Azadirachta indica, Momordica charantia, Phyllanthus amarus, Phyllanthus niruri, Laportea ovalifolia, Ceiba pentandra, Allium cepa, Persea americana and Catharanthus roseus were revealed interesting in the potential management of diabetes and arterial hypertension. -

Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Benin. Methodology: Analgesic activity was examined using the hot plate and acetic acid- induced writhing test while acute anti-inflammatory effect was studied using carrageenan and dextran-induced paw edema. Results: Oral administration of the extract produced significant (P<0.01) antiedematogenic effect with a dose of 100 mg/kg within the 2nd and 4th h of the experiment in the dextran-induced paw edema and within the 1st and 3rd h in the carrageenan model. The extract exhibited a significant (P<0.001) inhibition of acetic acid- induced writhing. In the hot plate test, the extract (100 mg/kg) significantly (P<0.05) prolonged the reaction latency to pain at the 60 min.
