Wednesday 30th August 06, Results of Club Summer League Race 2, Tymon Park

The second cross country race in the league turned out to be a very competitive affair. With one lap to go anyone of six runners were in with a shout. However debutant Rory O’Hanlon had other ideas and having been paced for five laps by Donna tore off when told he had only one lap to go. Powering away over the first of the last lap he opened up a substantial gap and looked all over the winner. However with 200-300 metres left his early exuberance was beginning to tell and the pack began to close. Eoin Murray who had started with Rory and Donna and dropped someway off the pace stormed through on the last lap and was reeling in Rory on the last straight. However Rory held on to mark his debut with a win (his last as well). Eoin finished second holding off the fast finishing Eoin Flynn who posted the fastest time of the day (15.59). Donna despite the shock of seeing the winner take off at the start of the lap held her composure and finished 4th. Monday 31st July 06, Rathfarnham WSAF Club Trip to Sheffield

The athletic club has for some time considered organising a trip to foreign parts to participate in a race with a social aspect included. We have therefore decided to test the water and see what if any interest there would be for such an event. The plan which is very much at preliminary stage is as follows. Compete in a cross country relay in Sheffield (North of England) The relay is 5 X 2 miles for men and 3X 2 Miles for women. While the official entry form is not yet out it is assumed that there will be either a separate race for masters or the relay will incorporate masters teams. For more information [click here]

Monday 31st July 06, Justin Gatlin Tests Positive for Testosterone

Justin Gatlin tested positive after unknowingly having testosterone cream rubbed into his legs by a massage therapist with a grievance, according to his coach Trevor Graham. The Olympic and world champion failed the test at the Kansas Relays in April and faces a lifetime ban for a second offence following a positive test for an amphetamine at the 2001 US Junior Championships which was later overturned but not annulled. The 24-year-old has protested his innocence and should learn his fate within a week in a hearing before the United States Anti-doping Agency. However, Graham is insistent his athlete is the victim of sabotage and claimed on one occasion when he walked in on a massage session the therapist had quickly slipped a white jar of the substance into his pocket. He told the Washington Post: 'We know who the person is who actually did this. 'Justin is devastated. Myself, too. We are extremely upset right now. We are trying to go out and make sure we can prove his innocence, and we hope this individual has the guts to come forward and say he did it.'

Sunday 30th July 06, Woodies Dublin International Track & Field Meeting, Morton Stadium

Eoin Flynn of Rathfarnham WSAF got his first international experience in the Mens 800m race at the Dublin Int on Saturday, but bad weather conditions ruled out any fast times, and Eoin ran 1.58.42, Michael Freeley ran in the mens 3000m and was just out side his best for the distance. Paul McKee’s victory in the 400 metres in 46.28 at the Dublin International on Saturday in extremely blustery conditions at the Morton Stadium was the highlight of the meeting. Paul had the huge satisfaction in the last 50 metres of overhauling Ofentse Mogawane, South Africa who last Sunday ran 45.11 for the distance. David McCarthy will also be pleased with run of 46.61 for 3rd while Brian Doyle a relay member for Gothenburg had a new best of 47.12. A victory in the 200 metres for Paul Hession, back from injury, over Morne Nagel, South Africa was a satisfying return to competition. Paul ran 21.21 into the stiff breeze to defeat Nagel in 21.38 with David Gillick a splendid 3rd in 21.61. The most exciting race of the afternoon was the women’s 200 metres where Heide Seyerling South Africa just edged out Anna Boyle on the line 24.01 to 24.02. The slow early pace and the strong breeze militated against fast times in the Morton Mile which was won impressively by Johan Cronje, South Africa ( 4.00.79 ) from last year’s winner Youcef Abdi, Australia ( 4.01.40 ) and Anthony Famiglietti , USA 3rd in 4.01.9. Wednesday 26th July 06, Results and Report of Club Summer League 5km Race, Tymon Park

The first round of the summer league was held in Tymon Park on Saturday 17th July. The weather was glorious with sunshine, no breeze and a lush and fast surface. The race started off with Ann McGreal as normal heading off first and the rest chasing from behind. It took a couple of laps for the form to be established. With four of the six laps remaining it was down to three. Ann was still setting a steady pace and had still a substantial lead. If she were to be caught it would either be by Gerry Doyle or regular guest Joe Keaney. The two lads gave chase and Joe seeing Ann in his sights pushed hard over the last two laps. He caught Ann on the last lap. However Ann dug deep and while Joe went by it took a big effort by Gerry on the last lap to catch her. This he duly did and pulled away down the home straight. Paul Gorey who had his personal battle with Grainne Butler for most of the race closed on Ann in the last straight and piped her on the line. Fastest run on the day was by Gearoid O’Connor in 16.36. Report by Derek McConnon. For results of the race [click here] Next race will be on Saturday 26 August

Sunday 23rd July 06, Rathfarnham WSAF Athletes in National Track & Field Championship, Morton Stadium

Rathfarnham WSAF was well represented in the Mens 800m and the Mens 5000m final. Eoin Flynn who made his breakthrough in last years nationals vowed to return the next year and make the final, and he did that in style, finishing third in his heat in 1.53. Karl Fahy made a breakthrough of his own by also finishing third in his heat and running a new personal best of 1.57.39 to qualify. It was evident from the way that Eoin Flynn ran that he was chasing a medal. It was a brave move but in the end finished 8th in 1.55, but we can look forward to Eoin going one better next year, as he did this year! Any athlete who ran a pb to qualify for the National final may have been content just to be in the final and not feature, but Karl ran his heart out and finished in 10th place and ran another pb of 1.56.0. Two Personal bests in the space of 24 hours in 800m running is not bad! In the Mens 5000m Paul Fleming had a good run to finish with 14.51 and Michael Freeley is making the break into Senior running smoothly with a good run of approx 15.47, Gearoid finished in 15.57. Well done to Jonathon Hughes and Brian Coleman who ran in the 1500m heats.

In the mens 1500m it was Alistar Cragg who took out the pace, the first lap in 59 and then 61, but Liam Reale managed to hang on and push out the pace in the last lap to win ahead of the European Indoor 3000m champion, Colin Costello was third. The Mens 5000m had an early breakaway group of Martin Fagan, Gary Murray and James Nolan and in the end it was Murray who won by a whisker to win in 14.14.
