  • Shrimp Culture Impact on the Surface and Ground Water of Bangladesh
The 1 st International Applied Geological Congress, Department of Geology, Islamic Azad University - Mashad Branch, Iran, 26-28 April 2010 Shrimp Culture Impact on the Surface and Ground Water of Bangladesh A.K.M. Munirul Haque1, M. Sarwar Jahan2 and Md. Abul Kalam Azad2* 1Local and Revenue Audit Directorate, Audit Complex, Segun Bagicha, Dhaka – 1000, Bangladesh . 2*Institute of Environmental Science, University of Rajshahi , Rajshahi – 6205, Bangladesh . Tel. 88-01746-141541 (cell phone) and 88-0721-750930 (office) Fax. 88-0721-750064, E-mail. [email protected] Abstract A case study was carried out to see the impacts of shrimp culture on the surface (pond) and ground water (tube-well) quality in three coastal sub-districts of Bagherhat Sadar, Rampal and Morrelganj of Bangladesh. The people of Rampal (100%), Morrelgonj (87.5%) and Bagherhat (75.5%) expressed that salinity of both surface and ground water increased for shrimp culture, and water becomes more turbid, odorous and less tasty compare to pre-shrimp culture scenario. The ground water pH was found to little acidic (6.07– 6.71) but the surface water was mild alkaline in nature (7.00–7.46). Ground water was more saline (1893.12–2673.33 ppm) than surface water (513.31-2253.33 ppm). Potassium level of surface water was very high (97.75-242.42 ppm) compare to ground water (11.73- 27.37 ppm), which exceeds the WHO Guideline Value (10 ppm) and Bangladesh Standard for Drinking Water (12.0 ppm). The pollution level of phosphorous and iron was found to little higher but other pollutants like nitrate, boron and zinc was found to very low in surface and ground water in the shrimp culture area of Bangladesh.

The result of research indicates that bioclimatic maps of Semnan Province have remarkable differences in formation of dominant types quantities in summer and winter. Generally mentioned types are restricted to three types in winter and seven types in summer. K1, K2 and K4 types are formed because of outward climatical factors in winter. For the purpose of C2, M2, M3, W3 and W4 are five types effected by both outside and local factors in spring. Seven types (H3, H4, H5, M1, M3, W3, W4) are formed solely on the basis of local factors (outside and local) three bioclimatical types (M3, M1, C2) dominate in fall. Key words: Bioclimatic, Terjung, Peace coefficient, Wind-chill, Regionalization, Semnan Province.

E-mail: [email protected] (Received 21 Oct 2008; revised version 11 Jul 2009; accepted 18 Jul 2009) Summary The aim of this study was to provide preliminary quantitative information on selenium and iodine status of sheep in Markazi province, Iran. Selenium and iodine status of grazing sheep were measured for 57 different flocks in 14 regions over one year. The districts were selected to represent major sheep growing areas in the province. Blood samples were collected from 2 to 3-year-old ewes during summer, autumn and winter. Samples were analyzed for blood glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx) activity and plasma inorganic iodine. There were significant differences between regions and seasonal differences in terms of blood GSHpx activity and plasma inorganic iodine concentration (P<0.01). Low levels of GSHpx activity (<60 IU/gHb) and plasma inorganic iodine (<5 µg/dl) in some regions or some seasons indicated the need for dietary supplementation of these minerals. Key words: Sheep, Nutrition, Mineral, Selenium, Iodine Introduction of insufficient iodine intake (Bobek, 1998). A primary reason for determining the Living organisms depend on minerals selenium (Se) and iodine (I) status of an for proper function and structure.

  • The First Evidence of Paleolithic Cave Sites in the Northern Margin of the Iranian Central Desert, Semnan, Iran

The region under investigation in Semnan Province is located in the northwestern margins of Dasht-e Kavir in Iranian Plateau. It was investigated primarily in 1980s and 1990s by Iranian archaeologists. From 2009, The Paleolithic Survey of the Iranian Central Desert Project (PSICDP) was established in order to evaluate the Paleolithic potential of the region, as a result of which Palaeolithic sites were documented and their surface collections were published. The current survey was conducted as a part of PSICDP project in autumn 2017. As a result, 12 caves and rock shelters were recorded, despite the promising condition of which only one had evidence from Palaeolithic Period. Anzo Cave, in northwest of Mehdishahr, was the only cave which yielded few number of chipped stones on the outer slope of the cave. The results of this survey raise the possibility that movement patterns of Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers in the region included seasonal-vertical movements between mountainous area in the north and southern lowlands.

Cognitive and mental factors, such as fear and embarrassment, along with the lack of counseling provision are among important barriers to uptake. Objectives. The aim was to establish whether motivational interview could affect women’s awareness, attitude and uptake of Pap testing. Material and methods. This randomized trial was conducted on 90 middle-aged women visiting the healthcare centers of Shazand county in 2016. Sampling was done in six urban centers. Would-be participants were identified by reviewing the profiles of middle-aged women (between 30 and 59 years) who did not keep up with routine screening and who met inclusion criteria. After obtaining their in- formed consent, the participants were placed in two groups (control and intervention), each with 45 subjects, using randomized block design in two blocks (A and B). Data collection instruments included a researcher-made questionnaire design-based on the research topic.

A faunistic study on the diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) of Markazi province (Central Iran) with the new records. Munis Entomology & Zoology 3 (1): 165-170] ABSTRACT: In this study, 33 diving beetle species belonging to 18 genera, collected from the Markazi province in the central part of Iran, between 2001–2005 have been established faunistically. Seven species and two genera are recorded from Iran for the first time. The ecological significance of the new records is briefly discussed. KEY WORDS: Aquatic beetles, Coleoptera, Faunistics, Markazi province, Iran. Aquatic Coleoptera constitute an important part of the macrozoobenthos of freshwater habitats. Small and temporary water bodies have more species than large and permanent ones (Larson, 1985). Aquatic beetles have their greatest abundance and diversity in the temperate regions (Spangler, 1982). These insects are not particular in their choice of water bodies and occur in a wide variety of habitats (Galewwski, 1971; Zaitsev, 1953) although many species may prefer certain types of water bodies (Hosseinie, 1978). Many of them, especially dytiscids and many hydrophilids are generally found in habitats of small, shallow water bodies or margin of rivers and marshes and they occupy the zone of emergent vegetation, mats of plant debris or flooded terrestrial vegetation along the shore line (Jach & Margalit, 1987).
