A staple in the region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams ( and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- Manhattanville Quick Facts: rounded student-athlete. Levinthal also serves as head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 48 conference championships – 25 regular-season championships and 23 tournament titles – in the last seven seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 25 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. The Valiants put together another very strong overall season in 2009-10, as seven different programs achieved either a regular-season or conference tournament championship. Sixteen of the 21 Valiant programs reached their conference tournament during the year, including Freedom Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s golf and baseball teams. Multiple teams ascended to new heights in 2009-10, including the men’s golf team, which won its conference title by an amazing 39 strokes, and the women’s soccer team, which achieved the fi rst NSCAA national ranking in program history thanks to a program-record 17 wins. On an individual level, Manhattanville produced a program-record four All-Americans, six conference Players of the Year and four conference Coaches of the Year. Manhattanville had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008-09, posting a cumulative department winning percentage of .548 (184- 151-6), while successfully integrating new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track programs that raised the number of varsity sports at Manhattanville to 21. Three teams – men’s basketball, men’s and baseball – earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships, while the men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse teams set new program records for wins in a season. The Valiants also produced two All-Americans, four conference Players of the Year, three conference Coaches of the Year and three conference Rookies of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while two Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. A former Assistant Sports Information Director at Manhattanville, Fisher also assists the Sports Information Department by serving as a statistician for home baseball games and other home contests. Fisher began her tenure at Manhattanville as an administrative assistant in the Manhattanville development offi ce before moving over to the Athletic Department. The elevation of Weir to the head coaching position will make for an easy transition for the Valiants, as he has previously served as both offensive and defensive coordinator at various times during his first five seasons at Manhattanville.

Weir will take the reins of the entire program for the first time this year and will look to bring the Valiants into the upper echelon of the very competitive Middle Atlantic Conference.

Weir brings a bevy of coaching experience to Purchase, having served as the Irish national team offensive coordinator since 2003 and in January 2010 was promoted to head coach for the 2010 FIL World Championships. At the European Championships held in Prague in 2004, Weir helped Ireland win their division and lead all nations in scoring, as the team amassed 82 goals throughout the tournament. In 2005, under Weir’s guidance, Ireland won the Celtic Cup, Ireland’s first lacrosse championship in the country’s history. During the 2006 World Championship in London, Ontario, Weir, served as the offensive coordinator and helped the team finish seventh in the world. In August of 2008, Weir served as the Head Coach of the Irish National Team for the European games in Lahti, Finland.

Weir is also the Director of Coaching and Development for Ireland and is one of the founders of the Ireland Lacrosse Foundation and the Hudson Valley Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.

From 1995-2005, Weir served as the head coach of the highly-regarded Lakeland/Panas high school lacrosse team in northern Westchester County. During his tenure at Lakeland/Panas, Weir’s teams played in eight Section I championship games, winning twice, and Weir also guided the Rebels to seven league titles, one regional title and one appearance in the New York State Final Four. While head coach, Weir produced nine high school All-Americans and seven that went on to become college All-Americans. In 1997 and 2005, Weir coached in the North-South game and has coached at the Hudson Valley Empire State Games team from 1991-2005.

Weir currently resides in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. with his wife Mary and their two children, Elisabeth and Brian.

2011 Manhattanville Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide 3 Coaching Staff Recruiting/Defensive Coordinator Tom Albano Second Season • Springfield ’09 Tom Albano, a four-year men’s lacrosse letterwinner at Division III Springfield College, enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Valiant men’s lacrosse program in 2010-11.

Albano serves as the team’s defensive coordinator and assists with the Valiant goalkeeping unit while also heading up the team’s recruiting and scouting efforts.

In his first season with the Valiants, Albano pupil Andrew Predun made 256 saves as a senior, the most by any goaltender in NCAA men’s lacrosse in 2010, while also ranking sixth in Division III with a .646 save percentage.

Albano came to Manhattanville with plenty of collegiate lacrosse experience at regional power Springfield College, earning four varsity letters and serving as the team’s starting netminder as a junior and senior. In 51 career games (39 starts), Albano posted a career 7.19 goals against average, a .601 save percentage and a 25-14 record, while his 400 career saves rank sixth in school history at Springfield.

He had one of the best seasons in program history as a senior captain in 2009, posting a school-record 7.04 goals against average and stopping 61.7 percent of shots he faced. Albano earned ECAC New England Region Goaltender of the Year honors and an All-ECAC first-team selection, while he was also recognized as a first-team All-Pilgrim Lacrosse League honoree and was selected to play in the 2009 NEILA/Turfer East-West Senior All-Star game. The netminder led the team to the second round of NCAA Tournament as a senior, where he made 22 saves against eventual NCAA titlist Cortland State.

In four seasons, Albano helped Springfield to three NCAA Tournament appearances and three Pilgrim League championships.

Albano currently resides in Purchase. Offensive Coordinator Drew Ginsberg Fourth Season • Springfield ’07 Drew Ginsberg returns for his fourth season as a member of the Manhattanville men’s lacrosse coaching staff in 2010.

Ginsberg, who joined the Valiant staff in August 2007 as a member of former head coach Todd Hodgson’s initial coaching staff and spent two years as a full-time assistant coach, works primarily as the team’s offensive coordinator.

In his first season as an assistant for the Valiants, Ginsberg helped the Valiants reach their highest single-season win total since 1992 and their first postseason appearance since 1992. In addition to his duties working with the Valiant offense, he worked closely with goalie Andrew Predun, helping Predun earn first-team All- Conference honors.

Ginsberg has coached at several camps, including the Peak Performance Lacrosse Camp and the Top Star Lacrosse Camp. In the summer of 2008, Ginsberg coached at the Head, Heart, Hustle Lacrosse Camp and the Adrenaline Lacrosse Shootout.

In the fall of 2008, Ginsberg helped run the Renegades Lacrosse Fall League in the Hudson River Valley and coached the Renegade High School Select Travel Team. He also coaches the neighboring Keio Academy lacrosse teams during the school year.

A Springfield College graduate, Ginsberg served as team captain of the Pride during his senior year. As a four-year letterwinner, Ginsberg helped lead Springfield to three Pilgrim League championships and three NCAA Tournament berths, and was a three-time Pilgrim League All- Academic selection.

Surrounded by a new lighting system, scoreboard, press box and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 21 Manhattanville athletic teams to make use of the program for training, practice and games. The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high – let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other Division III programs can do. The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access, allowing for live audio and video broadcasts of Valiant games along with use of SIDEARM Sports’ live stats program that allow fans to follow all the action when not in Purchase. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system is also housed in the press box.

Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.

THE CORE VALUES Proudly a value-oriented liberal arts college for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.” Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by: • Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers; • Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and • Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community. MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
