Photography: Beyond the Instructor: C. Sandy Lopez-Isnardi Contact Hrs: 85 Language of Instruction: English

Macerata, Italy

COURSE DESCRIPTION Photography is the medium of choice communicating on many levels of our lives. We experience photography in the media, our private lives, and it is intimately tied to memory, family, and friends. Today, the snapshot prevails and there are thousands of images made and disseminated. Knowing how images work, what makes them 'good/ and understanding their social implications helps gain crucial visual literacy needed today. This course will consider Photographic Syntax and the relationship between camera techniques and aesthetic equivalents, helping students learn how to read and "make photographs/5 thus increasing their visual literacy.

COURSE OBJECTIVES A) Instructional goals: The instructor will help students understand what and how to make good images that go beyond-the everyday snapshot. We will specifically explore photographic syntax and modern and post modern theories. B) Students who successfully complete this course will do so by creating 20 final images that communicate their ideas and a body of work with an Artist Statement that addresses the photographer's ideas and goals. These images will be disseminated via a website made by the students. There will be three Critiques/Reviews throughout the 5-week period and each critique should show evidence of increased understanding in making an excellent image.

Using the setting of Macerata and excursions throughout the course, students will have an opportunity to create high impact images that speak metaphorically to a broad audience. Through readings, examples, demonstrations, hands-on shooting experiences, editing and ranking via Adobe Lightroom®, students will create a website for their best images. Websites that feature accomplished artists will be a prime resource. Based on excursions that become available, students will pick a theme they would like to visually address. Journals will include students' impressions of artists reviewed, articles, personal ideas, and experiences with each excursion and photo shoot.

Each student will create a web site that includes his or her portfolio and artist statement. This course can be applicable to Art, Communications and New Media Studies majors. It is also applicable for general education or distributive requirement courses. Students will need a 12 mega pixel or higher digital camera (excluding mobile devices).
