Edwards on the Will: A Century of American Theological Debate Description Jonathan Edwards towered over his contemporaries--a man over six feet tall and a figure of theological stature- -but the reasons for his power have been a matter of dispute. Edwards on the Will offers a persuasive explanation. In 1753, after seven years of personal trials, which included dismissal from his Northampton church, Edwards submitted a treatise, Freedom of the Will, to Boston publishers. Its impact on Puritan society was profound. He had refused to be trapped either by a new Arminian scheme that seemed to make God impotent or by a Hobbesian natural determinism that made morality an illusion. -

A REHABILITATION OF SCHOLASTICISM? A REVIEW ARTICLE ON RICHARD A. MULLER'S POST-REFORMATION REFORMED DOGMATICS, VOL. I, PROLEGOMENA TO THEOLOGY* DOUGLAS F. KELLY REFORMED THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI For decades the idea of scholastic theology has tended to raise very nega tive images, especially among Protestants. The very words 'Protestant scholasticism' or 'seventeenth-century Orthodoxy' conjure up mental pic tures of decaying calf-bound Latin folios covered with thick dust. Of forced and inappropriate proof-texting inside, of abstract and boring syl logisms, far removed from the dynamism of biblical history and concerns of modem life, of harsh logic, a polemical spirit and an almost arrogant propensity to answer questions which the ages have had to leave open. The 'Biblical Theology' movement inspired by Barth and Brunner earlier this century, and the great flowering of sixteenth-century Reformation studies since World War 11 have given seventeenth-century Protestant scholasticism very poor marks when compared with the theology of the original Reformers. The fresh emphasis on the dynamic development of the theology in tfie Scriptures among Evangelicals (post-V os) and vari ous approaches to the 'New Hermeneutics' among those in the more lib eral camp have raised serious questions about the scriptural balance (if not validity) of the more traditional Protestant text-book theology. R. T. Kendall, for instance, has quite negatively evaluated the seventeenth-cen tury Westminster confessional theology in light of the very Calvin whom the Westminster divines certainly thought they were following. 1 Can anything good, therefore, be said these days about Protestant scholasticism? Flagging philosophical minefields at the Synod of Dort (1618-1619) – reformed Scholasticism reconsidered1 B.J. van der Walt School of Philosophy Potchefstroom Campus North-West University POTCHEFSTROOM E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Flagging philosophical minefields at the Synod of Dort (1618- 1619) – reformed Scholasticism reconsidered This article investigates the phenomenon of reformed Scholasticism (of about 1550-1700), as it occurred at the Synod of Dort (1618-1619) and its Canons. More specifically, it fo- cuses on the central problem at the Synod, viz. the relationship between God and human beings, as expressed in the ideas contained in the Canon regarding divine election and repro- bation. As illustration the positions of two leading figures in the clash between the Calvinists and the Remonstrants, namely that of Gomarus (1563-1641) and Arminius (1560-1609), are philosophically analysed. In spite of the fact that neither view- point was eventually accepted by the Synod, their theologies clearly reflect the dominant scholastic philosophy of the time. This analysis is carried out in the context of the problem- historical method of historiography developed by D.H. Th. Anglican Reflections on Justification by Faith
ATR/95:1 Anglican Reflections on Justification by Faith William G. Witt* This article reexamines the Reformation doctrine of justification by faith alone in the light of traditional criticisms and misunder- standings, but also of recent developments such as agreed ecu- menical statements and the “New Perspective” on Paul. Focusing on formulations of justification found in Anglican reformers such as Thomas Cranmer and Richard Hooker, the author argues that justification by grace through faith is a summary way of saying that salvation from sin is the work of Jesus Christ alone. Union with Christ takes place through faith, and, through this union, Christ’s atoning work has two dimensions: forgiveness of sins (jus- tification) and transformation (sanctification). Union with Christ is sacramentally mediated (through baptism and the eucharist), and has corporate and ecclesial implications, as union with Christ is also union with Christ’s body, the church. The Reformation doctrine of justification by faith is much misun- derstood. Among Roman Catholics, there is the caricature of justifica- tion by faith as a “legal fiction,” as if there were no such thing as a Protestant theology of either creation or sanctification. Similar to the accusation of “legal fiction” was the older criticism that justification by faith was an example of the tendency of late medieval Nominalism to reduce salvation to a matter of a divine voluntarist command, with no correlation to any notion of inherent goodness. For Luther, it was said, the Nominalist God could declare to be righteous someone who * William G. In his introduction to those published papers on the Westminster Confession of Faith, Professor Heron said this: Some feel that continued adherence to the Confession is a vital bulwark of the Church’s faith, and indeed of its identity. Others are convinced that the qualifications with which the Confession is hedged about make the adherence required of ministers and elders a mere formality, largely meaningless and in practice ineffectual, and the Church must express its doctrinal basis with greater definiteness than the Confession can enable. Others again recognize the ambiguity of the status quo, but see advantages in leaving matters as they are.1 He noted some of the main questions that were being asked at that time: How sound is the general teaching and tone of the Confession? How far is it time-conditioned, and how far might it still be seen as a Confession for today? Does the Confession function effectively as the principal subordinate standard of the Church? […] Could it function more effectively – or alternatively, is a principal subordinate standard necessary at all? How far is the church at liberty to modify the standing of the Confession? What consequences for the Church’s own identity might follow? What practical alternatives might there be to the present position? What grounds might be advanced for preferring them? He is often known only for a sermon, "Sinners in the Aands of an Angry God." This is unfortunate because followers of Christ should know this man's life. This paper focuses on Jonathan Edwards as a godly family man and on his missiological work. An emphasis is not carefully analyzed by many. The research for this essay originated from the author's desire to know more about Mr. Edwards. The texts studied are The works ofJonathan Edwards, along with many scholarly books and essays. The main modern books used are from Perry Miller and Elizabeth Dodds. All in all, the following research adds clarity and context to Edwards' legacy and to its enduring value to Christians. Samuel Hopkins and Slavery
Samuel Hopkins and Slavery by Charles R. Biggs Samuel Hopkins modified Jonathan Edwards's distinctive doctrine of disinterested benevolence in the late 18th century. This provided the theological foundation for Hopkins to become the first American abolitionist. Hopkins's doctrine focused not on God alone as Being in General, as Edwards taught, but he included the focus of man in his horizontal life to others after conversion. According to Hopkins, the fruit of the Christian life should be willing to suffer no matter what the consequence, out of selflessness to others. The practical application of this doctrine led to Hopkins's fight against the practice of slavery in Newport, Rhode Island. According to Hopkins, this was the selflessness that should be the fruit of the true Christian: willing to suffer for God no matter what the consequences, even if it meant challenging the social practices in ending the slave trade. He believed abolitionism was just one of the ways a Christian could manifest disinterested benevolence to man, in one's love to God. Hopkins's doctrine would influence Christian reform movements with a focus on civil morality in antebellum America. His influence and legacy of Abolitionism in the 19th century would challenge the unity of the churches and the social order in America that would lead to the American Civil War. In January 1758, Jonathan Edwards had been installed as the new president of Princeton University. A Smallpox epidemic was threatening the Princeton community and Edwards was advised to be inoculated from the virus. On February 23, 1758, Edwards's doctor inoculated him with the smallpox virus and within a few days his mouth and throat began to prevent him from swallowing. -

God and man in baptist hymnals 1784-1844 david singer Few issues are as significant or as intriguing for the student of intel lectual history as the manner in which ideas are transmitted from the intellectual elite to the broad masses of society. In point of fact, however, historians have given little systematic attention to this problem. This can be readily seen, for example, in the large number of scholarly writings which have dealt with the transformations in Calvinist theology in the period between the Great Awakening and the revivals of Charles Finney.1 Often written from a history of ideas perspective, and focused on the writings of a number of leading theologians, these volumes have clearly delineated the various stages in the shift from a strict Calvinism to Arminianism. What one seeks in vain in most of these studies, however, is any discussion of the ways in which the subleties of theological specula tion were made available to the average churchgoer. We know a great deal about men like Edwards, Backus, Beecher and Taylor, but very little about the manner in which their ideas entered the mainstream of Ameri can intellectual life. In order to achieve a more precise understanding of the ways in which changing theological ideas were disseminated and popularized during the early Republic, I have undertaken an analysis of Baptist hymnals pub lished in the years 1784-1844.2 While an extensive examination of the sermonic literature of the period would also have proved fruitful in this connection, the hymnals, being specifically intended for wide congrega tional use, offer, I believe, the best insight into the popularization of sophisticated religious concepts.
