Comedy Central Uk Recommissions 'The COMEDY CENTRAL UK RECOMMISSIONS ‘THE ALTERNATIVE COMEDY EXPERIENCE’ LONDON, 29 May 2013: Comedy Central UK today announced details of a second series commission of its cult hit stand-up show The Alternative Comedy Experience. The series, produced in-house by Comedy Central UK’s Head of Production, Colin Dench, and directed by Tim Kirkby, will return for a further 12 x 30’ episode run, to be filmed this summer and due to air on the channel in early 2014. The Alternative Comedy Experience is the only show of its kind on UK television, dedicated to bringing alternative comedy to new audiences on Comedy Central. The series, which examines the enduringly popular, grass-roots stand up scene and films as live at The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh, will feature genre-busting, cult-comedy performers, hand-picked by the channel, including internationally acclaimed, award-winning talent. Performers returning to series two include Tony Law, Isy Suttie, David Kay, Maeve Higgins, Josie Long and David O Doherty alongside a mix of newcomers such as Kevin Eldon, Nish Kumar, Liam Mullone and Grainne MaGuire. Stewart Lee will once again collaborate on the show as an executive producer and talent curator. Lee will also provide exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the performers, to uncover the inspiration behind their unique stand-up acts, which will be interspersed with their specially filmed live performances. Commenting on the recommission Jill Offman, SVP & Managing Director, Comedy Central, said: “As a big supporter of live British comedy we want to showcase the thriving and varied stand-up scene that exists here. The Alternative Comedy Experience is part of our growing slate of original, local commissions which also includes the forthcoming clip based, sketch show ‘Seann Walsh World’ and sitcom ‘Big Bad World’ starring Blake Harrison.” Colin Dench, producer of the series, added: “The first series of The Alternative Comedy Experience was a big hit with viewers, up 47% on the slot average, and showed how funny and accessible ‘alternative’ comedy can be by allowing a behind the scenes view of the real world of stand up inside an actual comedy club. This year the line-up will feature an unprecedented number of female comics amongst our brilliant cast, and with so many BAFTAs, Perriers, Barrys, Sonys and Chortle Awards between them, rarely has such a line-up of cutting-edge talent featured in one series.” The recommission of The Alternative Comedy Experience follows news that the show has been signed by Australia’s public television channel, ABC2, with an anticipated transmission in June 2013. **Ends** For further information, please contact: Patricia Lodge, Communications Director, Comedy Central 020 3580 3253 / [email protected] Notes to Editors: About Comedy Central UK: Comedy Central is a leading Pay TV General Entertainment channel and is part of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). • (Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1
(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context. Keywords: Atheism, Youth, UK, Belief, Sacred Phil Zuckerman (2010b, vii) notes that for decades British sociologist Colin Campbell’s call for a widespread analysis of irreligion went largely un- heeded (Campbell 1971).

SPECIFICALLY, I EXPLORE HOW THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER – AS DISSEMINATED BY THE PODCAST – CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE; SETTING THE BODY IN MOTION AND LEADING TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING, FEELING AND BEING. WHILE THESE PUBLIC EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION CAN BE TRANSGRESSIVE, I POSTULATE THAT THEY CAN ALSO RELIEVE SOME OF THE TENSION CREATED BY THE NEGATIVE AFFECTS SWIRLING AROUND FEMINISM, WHICH, ACCORDING TO AHMED, “IS ALWAYS ASSUMED TO BE BRINGING OTHERS DOWN” (AHMED, 2010:65). USING GUATTARI’S IDEAS ON THE PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVATION, I ARGUE THAT THESE EXPLOSIONS CAN INTENSIFY THE EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST COMMUNITY, PROVOKING A CONSIDERATION OF HOW PODCASTS SUCH AS THE GUILTY FEMINIST COULD EXTEND OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ONLINE ACTIVISM WITHIN CONTEMPORARY FEMINISMS.
