Chelsea Theatre Press Release: April 2016 Heels of Glory The Drag Action Musical Written by Tricity Vogue Composed by Richard Link Chelsea Theatre, 7 World’s End Place, King’s Road, London SW10 0DR 9-12, 15-19, 22-26 June 2016, 8pm (3pm matinees on 11, 12, 19, 26 June) Press Night: Friday 10 June, 8pm (with pre-show by Meth and VIP afterparty) Tickets £15 (£12 concs) Booking information chelseatheatre.org.uk 0207 352 1967 DRAG action musical Heels of Glory is set to headline at this year’s London Pride Festival, with a three week run at Chelsea Theatre from 9 – 26 June. Written by cabaret performer Tricity Vogue with music by award-winning composer Richard Link, Heels of Glory is an original musical with an action adventure plot and tunes inspired by vintage Bond movies. Pride Festival Curator, Duncan Day, said: “It will be one of the strongest headline events Pride in London Festival 2016 will have on its programme this year. Heels of Glory’s colorful production will provide great entertainment and joy to the LGBT+ community.” Francis Alexander, Artistic Director of Chelsea Theatre, said: "Tricity Vogue's company played to delighted sold-out crowds at Chelsea Theatre during test showings. It’s an honour to see the finished work returning to its early home for an even brighter, longer run of brilliant material” Richard and Tricity met as singing teacher and student, and conceived Heels of Glory seven years ago. Since then the show has sold out work-in-progress performances at the Royal VauXhall Tavern and The Albany in Deptford. It was workshopped at Shoreditch Town Hall in 2014 and was awarded Arts Council funding for a two day sell-out run at the Chelsea Theatre last year. Tricity Vogue said: “Heels Of Glory has everything I love about cabaret and drag on an epic scale: wit, inventiveness, outrageousness, and of course fabulousness, at Chelsea Theatre for a full three weeks. “This is what happens when you bring together top cabaret artists, celebrated drag queens and award winning musical theatre actors in one bubbling pot, and stir it up with a four-piece band. Expect nothing short of a geyser of glitter.” The story opens at nightclub La Douche, where international drag superstar Splendorella (Drag Idol finalist Topsie Redfern) is about to launch a new cosmetic to a waiting world of drag queens. But Supreme Sure Fire Foundation is not all it seems – its villainous creator, Allura Supreme (award winning cabaret artist Sarah- Louise Young), has a secret master plan to annihilate all the drag queens in the world. Budding young drag 07825 837274 [email protected] michaeleppypr.com queen Honey (Matthew Floyd Jones of duo Frisky and Mannish) and her tomboy best friend Jay (Susan Harrison from Olivier award winner Showstopper!) are all that stand in her way. The show is directed by Stephen Heatley (Head of the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of British Colombia, Canada) with production design by Meth, member of drag collective The Family Fierce and star of London Live’s Drag Queens of London. Many of these examinations have focused on performances that emphasize subversion and separated drag into two categories: the progressive drag that subverts, and the regressive drag that reinforces. While this approach has provided a wealth of understanding about drag performance and gender roles, drag can be examined without separating its subverting/reinforcing aspects.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 © Copyright by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire by Carl Douglas Schottmiller Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David H Gere, Chair This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the competitive reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, drawing upon approaches and perspectives from LGBT Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Performance Studies. Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. ii While most scholars analyze RuPaul’s Drag Race primarily through content analysis of the aired television episodes, this dissertation combines content analysis with ethnography in order to connect the television show to tangible practices among fans and effects within drag communities.

  • Drag Performance and Queer Communities in London
When The Lights Are Shining On Them: Drag Performance and Queer Communities in London Joe Parslow A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, University of London, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, October 2019 1 I declare that this thesis is a presentation of original work and I am the sole author. This work has not previously been presented for an award at this, or any other, University. All sources are acknowledged as References. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author and no quotation from it or information derived from it may be published without acknowledgement and the prior written consent of the author. ORCID ID: 0000-0002-3125-9213 2 Abstract Drag performance is and continues to be intimately linked to queer communities. This thesis explores drag performances and queer communities in contemporary London. It argues that these performances offer fertile sites for the emergence and sustenance of queer communities, focussing on the work of twelve performers in contemporary London. Starting from the understanding that homophobic and transphobic violence is increasingly prevalent in the context of this study, it describes and theorises drag performance and its relation to the practice of queer communities both in response to and regardless of this violence. Overall, this thesis proposes that drag and the spaces in which these performances happen facilitate queer communities and as such are connected to queer modes of survival. There has been a resurgence in drag performance in the UK both as a result of and a resistance to the rise in popularity of RuPaul’s Drag Race (World of Wonder, 2009).

Making Local News An organisational ethnography investigating news values within Local Digital Television Programme Services (L-DTPS) Kerry Traynor A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2017 Abstract This study of the production of British broadcast journalism, rather than its finished products, reveals the ways in which the organising and financing of journalism have traceable consequences on the ways in which news is selected and constructed, supporting the critical political economy perspective. Using a comparative ethnographic approach including interviews and observation of professional practice in three local television newsrooms, studios and other production spaces, this study represents a rare opportunity to gain insights into the ways in which events, issues and sources are selected by journalists, editors, producers and others engaged in the production of British broadcast news and how material is shaped into news bulletins and other programming. Drawing on news value theory (Galtung and Ruge 1965; Golding and Elliott 1979; Harcup and O’Neil 2001, 2016), the study offers a new model of news value analysis, the ‘News Value Matrix’, which takes account of the interplay between two key categories of news values, organisational pragmatics and perceptions of audience appeal. The study will be of interest to local broadcast journalists, editors and producers, to policymakers concerned with media and cultural policy, and to those wishing to develop a greater critical understanding of the professional practice of journalism. Keywords Broadcast journalism, local, commercial, public service, news values, professional practice, ethnography, critical political economy, Local Digital Television Programme Services (L-DTPS), UK Acknowledgements Completing this PhD has been a truly life-changing experience for me and it would not have been possible without the support and guidance that I received from many people.
