Drag Idol celebrates its 10th momentous year in 2014, and QX is proud to have been involved with it since the very beginning. This week, our resident Cabaret expert Jason Reid profiles some of the winners and notable entrants that have gone on to become well-known names on the cabaret circuit. The glamour never ends at QX Towers!

2 2008 WINNER

You’re the ice queen of the Drag Idol family; can you give me some pointers on how to be one... What are you trying to insinuate? [Laughs] I thought I was a total pussycat, apart from the odd Facebook rant. Who would like to play the part of you in the film of your life? Emma Watson, but she’d have to really find her inner bitch. Your favourite piece of drag? A green dress that Sandra gave me, which was older than me. I wore it until it practically fell apart.

DRAG IDOL HOST 2010 WINNER Did you ever imagine, when Drag Idol first began, that it’d become such a huge success? Not at all. In fact, I honestly thought it would be a one-off event, so to finally reach year ten is something everyone involved can be very proud of, and its certainly a team effort. What’s the secret to that success? It’s all down to the acts who have taken part, and the feedback on their experiences during the competition. The fact that we have produced a cabaret scene star almost every year is a testament to everyone’s efforts. What are your personal highlights from those ten years? Everyone knows you’re a huge Coronation Street fan, The Grand Final of 2011 when Son Ofa Tutu and Alexis but who from the show do you think would make a Carrington battled it out for the crown is my favourite good guest judge? moment. 3 2013 WINNER

What’s the best way to win over a Drag Idol judging panel? With money, alcohol and sexual favours. Suzanne Shaw, who was a judge at last year’s final, was a good kisser but a bad drinker. How would you sum up the UK cabaret scene right now in one word? Diverse. What’s your motto in life? Men and me are like pianos. When they get upright, I feel grand.

2009 WINNER

How does it feel to be the only ever non-drag winner? Well, it goes to show, the competition is open to all. Being 2012 WINNER caked in slap, wearing a dodgy wig, in costumes too tight for me, most people thought I was Rose Garden anyway. Yourself and Crystal D’Canter became a Crystal double act shortly after your win, but if you D’Canter hadn’t have bunked up with her, which of the 2005 other winners would you opt for as a stage Runner-Up partner? I love all them all to bits, but I would have to come out of the competition and go with Rose Garden. We have a fabulous relationship, that explodes Connie sometimes, when we’ve had a drink, but we have Conway wacky ideas of bible stories in drag; there’s a 2008 show in there somewhere. Finalist Which three cabaret songs would you banish to Room 101 if you could? ‘All That Jazz’ - There’s a great story in this song that rarely gets told properly. ‘Get This Party Adam All Started’ - it’s really long, and once you get 2009 through the first verse and chorus it really is Finalist done. And, ‘It’s Raining Men’ – Yes, I know Crystal and I sing it, but when I hear it my heart sinks. It’s been done to death!

I find that I got so used to the cameras being around that when they were not there I am not sure if I really existed anymore? misogynistic hangover of sexual shame from patriarchal culture to do with passive anal sex? Yes, I will let you fuck me, but only if you’re a real man. And ‘real men’ don’t wear stilettos. Personally, I don’t fancy drag queens. At the risk of sounding like a Grindr twat, I am gay because I fancy men and therefore men disguised as women, however obviously, don’t do anything for me erotically. Five times a charm!

Jeremy Joseph ran his fifth London Marathon last Sunday, just days after G-A-Y proudly announced it had hit the magic £250,000 mark in its fundraising for the Elton John AIDS Foundation…

Words and photos by Chris Jepson

WHETHER WATCHED from the armchair comfort of home or roadside with the hundreds of thousands of spectators, the London Marathon is easily one of the most emotional experiences to be had in the capital. There are the highs and laugh out loud moments as larger than life cartoon characters, portly gentlemen in Wonder Woman costumes and bum cheeks in Borat mankinis parade by, the heart-tugging family members running for loved ones lost to terminal illnesses and the heroic men and women who have lost limbs in the service of our country, but refuse to succumb to adversity and who’s bravery and determination are awe inspiring. But I was there for just one man, Jeremy Joseph, as a year of training and wet winter mornings came together for this, his fifth London Marathon. Arriving by taxi bike in what looked like a quilted little black dress, Jeremy was the most nervous I have ever seen him. There was a bug going around his staff at work and he had been feeling decidedly ropey for the past 24 hours, but with knees strapped up and clutching an energy drink he was determined and Raising money for the Elton John AIDS ready for the off. G-A-Y presents ALL SAINTS 12/04/14 Heaven, Villiers Street, Charing Cross, WORDS AND PHOTOS BY WC2N 6NG CHRIS JEPSON

WITH HITS LIKE ‘Never Ever’, ‘Under The Bridge’ and ‘Pure Shores’, All Saints were one of the biggest girl bands of the nineties, but after reuniting for a brief comeback in 2009 they split up with Melanie Blatt saying: “All Saints are never getting back together again. I never want to sing again.” But fast forward to 2014 and times have changed, the girls are fresh from a tour with the Backstreet Boys, the outfits are just as tight and the dance routines slicker than slick. Shaznay, Melanie and the Appleton sisters Natalie and Nicole rocked the stage at G-A-Y on Saturday night with a 40 minute set of their greats, and with 5 number 1 singles, 2 platinum albums and 2 gold albums they had plenty of material to choose from. There was also a surprise announcement on Twitter that they will be touring later this year for ‘Another Time Another Place’ with Atomic Kitten, East 17 and others… The girls are hot and the 90s are back!

XXL WRESTLE 12/04/14 WORDS BY Pulse TOM REDKID 1 Invicta Plaza, PHOTOS BY Southwark, SE1 9UF MARK STOREY

MARK AMES AND the team squeezed into their singlets and hit the mats for another macho foray into the homoerotic world of hardass he-men as XXL had themselves a barnyard wrassle with “Wrestle”. Every Gladiator heeded the call from far and wide to enter the stadium and take on one another as the WWF met XXL in a no-holds-barred cage match that could only be settled like real men--on the dance floor! Resident DJs Christian M., Alex Logan and Andy Almighty referreed the main room keeping the wrestlers in the ring with arena-style hard bass in a dazzling array of spotlights, lazers and confetti that would make any Lucha Libre blush neath his mask, while Joe Egg and Stuart Style harkened back to the halcyon days of our budding gym class locker room youth with 70’s retro hits in the Fur Lounge. Big screens in every room streaming hardcore MMA and soft-core wrestling porn. Featherweights, Heavyweights and Sumos all paired up, squared up and went at it round after round in a pin it, ya win it free for all. While sexy singlet-clad newly muscle-marrieds Josh and Luke (congrats!) tussled, I kicked back in the groovy trippin’ day-glo chill out room with its oversized astroturf sofas that make my butt look sooo tiny--I love it! There, everyone’s favourite wrestle-stud ‘Polish Pete’, with his shaved head and piercing blue eyes, taught me the ‘Krakow Krunch’, a headlock between his bulging bicep and pecs, ‘til you go ‘kruuunch’! Thanks coach! Rattled, I wandered into a corridor and my glaucoma must have set in, cuz it suddelnly got very dark and I couldn’t see a thing! I was knocked around like a human pinball! I had to grope my way through the dark, twisting and turning every knob I could feel but no door would open. That’s where the real wrestling took place! I must’ve taken on every weight class there is and came out a champion! Finally, I saw a speck of brightness and like Carole Ann I walked towards the light til I made my way out.

DISH 12/04/14 East Bloc WORDS BY 217 City Road, ANTHONY GILÉT Shoreditch, EC1V 1JN PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY

IT DIDN’T REALLY matter that the weather hadn’t quite lived up to our expectations this past Saturday as we knew that things down at Dish would be getting so hot that shorts were still totally acceptable. Paired with our new Dish tops, we were ready to skank out ‘til the early hours, although it seemed Jacqui Potato couldn’t even wait ‘til then – abandoning her booth briefly to grind on some of the clubbers. Standard. La Paquena sported yet another delectable ‘do that would put any lion’s mane to shame – girl must own more wigs than she does underwear. Meanwhile Borja Pena had the main room simmering, until come 3am when Tom Stephan took over and it became a hot pot of sweaty, sexual dancing. Ray Noir and Ollywood put on a perfect side dish where patrons were giving more pout than Pete Burn’s surgeon. Having to wait an entire month for the next Dish means come May, we’ll probably be hungrier than Kim Kardashian on the cover of Vogue, but that just means our appetite will be as out of control as our drinking. #Winning

KU BAR 12/04/14 30 LISLE STREET, CHINATOWN, WC2H 7BA WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS JEPSON

SATURDAYS IN THE West End offer a plethora of choices for bar hopping, alfresco drinking and full on clubbing, but this weekend we popped along to Ku Bar on Lisle Street which offers it all under one roof. From the intimate first floor champagne bar to the packed ground floor bar and down to the party playground in the basement Ku Klub, the live DJs kept the pop and commercial tunes coming with video screens for those that required inspiration for their shape throwing. Getting in some practice for their upcoming marathon Easter Playboy weekend where the venue will feature five nights of varying entertainment, the super hot bar boys stripped off their tops to reveal a glistening array of perfect pecs, while the shot boy delivered an oral burst of Sourz to anyone who caught his eye. Such fun and frivolity was had by all, I think we might have to pop along and do it all again to make sure!

DR ALEX, GP

Dear Dr Vass, I first started to try drugs after I split up with my boyfriend. It sounds stupid to say, but they helped me have the confidence to go out. My club drug of choice was Ketamine, because I liked how it just pushed everything away. But it spilled over into times when I wasn’t going out and I’d do it every day. A lot of my friends told me to stop, but I never listened. I did meet someone a few months ago and it got to a point that it was him or K. Thankfully, I chose him. But my mood is still affected and I’m not like I was. I have seen my GP and am going to start counselling, maybe even anti-depressants, but I read some news that Ketamine was now being used for depressed patients. So I have even wondered if I would start using it again –but really small amounts. Is this a crazy idea? SS

Dr Alex Vass says: Hi SS. Yes, that is a crazy idea. You have seen someone about how you are feeling and counselling and maybe anti-depressant medication are what you need. Certainly NO more drugs – of any kind! The news you read was about some research on just 28 people who have suffered incurable depression for decades. Ketamine, in very small doses, lifted some of the feelings of depression.
