Dr Philip O’Connell
Philip O’Connell was born to Philip and Margaret O’Connell on 7th May 1895, in the townland of Fartagh, parish of Lurgan. The eldest of three
sons, he attended Carnaross N.S, and completed his secondary education with the Christian Brothers in Kells. He attended U.C.D., and
attained a B.Sc degree in 1916 and M.Sc in 1917. He was appointed to the staff of the Central Technical Institute in Clonmel in 1917, became Principal in 1936, and retired in 1962. His father was a native Irish speaker and Philip learned to speak the language from him.
He was a member of the Royal Society of Antiquities of Ireland and a founder member of the Breifne Antiquarian Society in 1920.He became editor in 1926 and contributed to each of the nine journals published. He wrote about the parishes of Killenkere, Moybologue, Castlerahan, Munterconnaught, Lurgan and Crosserlough. In 1937 he published ‘The Diocese of Kilmore’, and in 1942 ‘The Schools and Scholars of Breifne’, which earned him a Ph.D. from the National University of Ireland. He wrote an article for the first number of Breifne in 1958 entitled ‘The Early Colonisation of Breifne’, and contributed further articles nearly every year afterwards until his death. Bellamnt Estate He wrote historical articles under his own name for The Meath Chronicle, and also under the pennames Viator and Rent Book Peregrinus. He was a contributor to Riocht na Mi, and on occasions to The Irish Ecclesiastical Record. He was a popular lecturer in Meath, Cavan and Tipperary. He died on 21 January 1970.
