MONDAY, 13 MAY 2019 CLEAN SWEEP FOR O=BRIEN FRENCH GUINEAS SWEEP By Tom Frary FOR GODOLPHIN AThere are a lot of horses there@, commented Aidan O=Brien in his typically understated way at Leopardstown on Sunday as he pondered the stable=s tsunami of Epsom Derby hopefuls including the easy G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. scorer Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Ballydoyle have now won every recognised Derby trial in Britain and Ireland in 2019 and this talented and progressive colt is responsible for two having rated a very impressive winner of the Apr. 6 G3 Ballysax S. over this course and distance. Uncovering which of the yard=s plethora of contenders for the blue riband will come out on top was an already taxing pursuit, but after another convincing prep performance from Broome it is fitting more into the unsolvable conundrum criteria. • Derby Double for Frankel As Hurricane Lane Swoops
SUNDAY, 27 JUNE 2021 DERBY DOUBLE FOR SANTA BARBARA TO THE TEST IN PRETTY POLLY FRANKEL AS HURRICANE There have been valid excuses for her missing the target so far in 2021, but Sunday=s G1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly S. at The LANE SWOOPS Curragh offers the ideal opportunity for >TDN Rising Star= Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) to deliver on her promise. Lacking vital experience when fourth in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket May 2 she was probably undone by a combination of a 12-furlong trip and testing ground when fifth in the June 4 G1 Epsom Oaks. AShe clearly ran a hugely promising race for a horse coming off the back of just a maiden win when fourth in the Guineas and that was always going to be a big ask for her over a mile on fast ground in a Classic first time up,@ Ryan Moore commented. AIt looks like the trip proved beyond her in bad conditions when fifth in the Oaks last time, so this 10-furlong trip could prove her optimum. Hopefully she can take a step forward here, but she is up against some horses of a similar ability and in some cases higher-rated opposition so this is another tough Group 1 assignment for her.@ Cont. p10 Hurricane Lane (right) | Racingfotos.com It was a Derby double for Frankel (GB) on Saturday as Godolphin=s Hurricane Lane (Ire) stepped forward to emulate his stablemate Adayar (Ire) in flying the flag for his sire in The Curragh=s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

Archives & Manuscript Collections National Sporting Library Middleburg, VA Richard Stone Reeves Archive MC0064 Name: Reeves, Richard Stone, 1919-2005 Materials: Correspondence, Photographs, Transparencies, Newspaper Clippings, Magazines, Documents, Scrapbooks, Photo Album, Book, Programs, Art Tools Dates: 1931-2005 Usage: Unless otherwise stated by NSL staff, these records are open for research without restrictions. Biographical Note Richard Stone Reeves was a prolific equine artist, painting portraits of approximately 1,000 race horses over the course of his long career. He was born in New York City in 1919 and was raised on Long Island, close to Belmont Park where he enjoyed spending time in his youth. From an early age, Reeves knew he wanted to combine his love for art with his interest in horses and racing. He attended Syracuse University and graduated in 1941 with a degree in Fine Arts. Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Reeves enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent his first two years in the Navy working in the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington and then volunteered for a combat mission in China where he spent 1944 and 1945. A chance meeting with Lt. Commander Robert G. Johnson in China would give Reeves the start to his career as an equine painter. Johnson happened to be the president of Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island and admired the sketches and paintings Reeves created in his free time. He learned that Reeves’ ambition was to paint racehorses, and after the war was over, Johnson commissioned Reeves to portray six champion horses for the Roosevelt Raceway. Reeves was then commissioned by the Daily Racing Form to paint Armed, the 1947 Horse of the Year.
