IEUM-Comillas / JENA – 22 de julio de 2020 We are facing one of the most complex situations ever, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Numbers are rising every day, in almost every corner of the globe. Africa and Europe have reported more than 2,700,000 cases and 200,000 deaths. The countries reporting the most cases and deaths in Africa are South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and Sudan. In Europe, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain and Russia. Both continents decided for the most part to close their borders, imposing a lockdown on all residents. Health and economic consequences have been dramatic in some regions, especially affecting the most vulnerable people, including migrants, refugees, and forcibly displaced persons. There is a desire of the Society of Jesus to know more about this global phenomenon, to better welcome and accompany the most vulnerable people, to put our Ignatian spirituality at the service of them, and to make proposals in the new future contexts that we will soon experience. To this end, JENA, in collaboration with the University Institute of Studies on Migration at Comillas Pontifical University and the Peace Institute at Hekima College, organizes these meetings with recognized experts and activists in the field of international migration. Descargar convocatoria EE.UU. – PUBLICACIÓN Bans, Walls, Raids, Sanctuary. Understanding U.S. Immigration for the Twenty-First Century Por A. Naomi Paik University of California Press – mayo de 2020 Days after taking the White House, Donald Trump signed three executive orders—these authorized the Muslim Ban, the border wall, and ICE raids. These orders would define his administration’s approach toward noncitizens. An essential primer on how we got here, Bans, Walls, Raids, Sanctuary shows that such barriers to immigration are embedded in the very foundation of the United States. A. Naomi Paik reveals that the forty-fifth president’s xenophobic, racist, ableist, patriarchal ascendancy is no aberration, but the consequence of two centuries of U.S. political, economic, and social culture. She deftly demonstrates that attacks against migrants are tightly bound to assaults against women, people of color, workers, ill and disabled people, and queer and gender nonconforming people. Against this history of barriers and assaults, Bans, Walls, Raids, Sanctuary mounts a rallying cry for a broad-based, abolitionist sanctuary movement for all. What’s going on? Trump is trying to get rid of asylum, which will affect all vulnerable communities, particularly LGBTQ people. We need as many people as possible submitting comments opposing this horrible new rule by July 15, 11:59pm EST. The current Trump administration’s proposed rulemaking on asylum, currently open to public comment until July 15, 2020, will harm migrants seeking protection by limiting criteria for persecution, membership in a particular social group, and disregarding violent contexts in the asylum-seekers’ countries of origin. If approved, this rule would make hundreds of thousands of immigrants most in need summarily ineligible to seek asylum, including: undocumented people who have fled danger without records or passports; people who travelled for more than 14 days in one country before applying; those who crossed countries with 3rd country agreements (Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Canada); those 5 who did not apply within one year of arrival; people who did not fill out asylum paperwork correctly (even if they had language barriers); people who did not do taxes accurately. Attorneys representing these immigrants would also be prohibited from presenting experts on particular countries’ dynamics, often essential supporting factors for asylum cases. These are just few of the heinous and hateful restriction’s the Trump administration wants to impose on asylum seekers with this ruling. It undermines our humanitarian values and defies commitment to international norms. Please respond and comment. They have to read and respond to every comment before implementing so let’s FLOOD them with messages! • New Engineering Report Finds Privately Built Border Wall Will Fail
New Engineering Report Finds Privately Built Border Wall Will Fail by Jeremy Schwartz and Perla Trevizo This article is co-published with The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan local newsroom that informs and engages with Texans. Sign up for The Brief weekly to get up to speed on their essential coverage of Texas issues. It’s not a matter of if a privately built border fence along the shores of the Rio Grande will fail, it’s a matter of when, according to a new engineering report on the troubled project. The report is one of two new studies set to be filed in federal court this week that found numerous deficiencies in the 3-mile border fence, built this year by North Dakota-based Fisher Sand and Gravel. The reports confirm earlier reporting from ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, which found that segments of the structure were in danger of overturning due to extensive erosion if not fixed and properly maintained. Fisher dismissed the concerns as normal post-construction issues. Donations that paid for part of the border fence are at the heart of an indictment against members of the We Build the Wall nonprofit, which raised more than $25 million to help President Donald Trump build a border wall. Former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon, We Build the Wall founder Brian Kolfage and two others connected to the organization are accused of siphoning donor money to pay off personal debt and fund lavish lifestyles. All four, who face up to 20 years in prison on each of the two counts they face, have pleaded not guilty, and Bannon has called the charges a plot to stop border wall construction.

Progressive Foreign Policy Debrief Intel for Advocacy DATE: 12/6/19 SL: Ukraine is the tip of Trump’s corruption iceberg It’s Not Just Ukraine: Trump’s Foreign Policy Is Corrupt Through-and-Through Two weeks ago, we declared our support for the impeachment of Donald Trump. As mountains of evidence on his abuse of power in Ukraine have now conclusively proven, Trump used the office of the president to pervert U.S. foreign policy for his personal gain. But it’s not just Ukraine. While the impeachment inquiry may be limited in scope, Trump’s corruption is not — Trump has repeatedly manipulated U.S. foreign policy for his own, private interests. In scandal after scandal after scandal, many of which don’t live in the headlines long, it has become clear that the only consistent piece of Trump’s otherwise erratic foreign policy is a drive for personal financial and political benefit. It’s difficult to predict exactly what the ripple effects of this corrupted approach to foreign relations will be, but one thing is certain: it won’t be what’s best for peace, justice, and human security. TIME AFTER TIME On Tuesday, George Nader, a lobbyist for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the private military firm Blackwater, was charged with funneling $3.5 million in illegal campaign contributions, including $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund. So it’s no coincidence that Nader has strengthened his close ties with members of the Trump administration’s inner-circle, including Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner, since 2016. It’s easy to forget that Nader was also part of a secret scheme, along with Elliot Broidy, to set up a backchannel with the crown princes of Saudi Arabia and the UAE and Trump in exchange for lucrative contracts from the Gulf monarchies.
