Collection of the L'viv Oblast Party Archive MS Coll 00696 Collection of the L’viv Oblast Party Archive [textual records] Scope: 1944-1956 Bulk: 1945-1949 Size: 12 boxes, 214 folders (4 meters) Source of Acquisition and Processing: Collection of the L’viv Oblast Party Archive was a part of the Stalin Era Research and Archives Project (SERAP) which was undertaken by the Centre for Russian and East European Studies (now: the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs) in the 1990s. The material was collected by Jeffrey Burds, now an Associate Professor of History at Northeastern University and the Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Russia and the Soviet Union. This collection consists of photocopies of documents from the former Communist Party of L’viv (now: Department of Public Associations at the State Archive of L’viv Oblast, Viddil hromads’kykh ob’iednan’ Derzhavnoho arkhivu L’vivs’koi oblasti). For years, access to this material was very limited including the structure and contents of the funds. This collection also served as the source materials for Jeffrey Burds’ “The Early Cold War in Soviet West Ukraine, 1944- 1948” in The Carl Beck Papers in Russian and East European Studies (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh, 2001). Location: Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto Processing information: Processed by Nadia Zavorotna in 2017 Scope and content The major part of the collection consists of reports, inquiries, memoranda, records, and meeting transcripts of secretaries of the regional, district, and city party committees of the Communist Party of Ukraine. Most of the documents contain information from the regional party committee on the implementation of decisions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian SSR Council of Ministers, on the report of the L’viv Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, such as activities on strengthening ideological work among the public, and the fight with the Ukrainian nationalist underground movement. Some examples of the documents in the collection include: report reviews and copies of sentences from the Drohobych Military Tribunal; lists of groups of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in the Drohobych Region; documents on the trial of Mykhailo Stakhur (1932-1951), a member of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army who assassinated the pro-Soviet Ukrainian writer Iaroslav Halan (1902- 1949); information, inquiries, and special reports from the NKGB and NKVD, including on the number of people forcibly displaced by the Nazis to Germany from the occupied territories in 1941-1945; inquiries by the Committee for State Security to the regional party committee on special checks of writers and artists; and inquiries and information on the evacuation of the Polish population from the territory of the Ukrainian SSR to Poland, and resettlement of the Ukrainian population that arrived from Poland. Before the independence of Ukraine, the majority of the documents in the collection were inaccessible to researchers. The author proposes a method of studying the influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism. The influence of agglomerations on the development of tourism is -il lustrated by the case of the Lviv region and the use of correlation analysis. In addition, official statistics about the main indicator of the tourism industry by region and city are subjected to centrographic analysis. The coincidence of weight centers confirms the exceptional influence of the Lviv agglomeration on the development of tourism in the region, which is illustrated with a cartographic visualization. Keywords: agglomeration, tourism, research methodology 1. Introduction Urbanization, as a complex social process, affects all aspects of society. The role of cities, especially large cities, in the life of Ukraine and its regions will only grow. The growing influence of cities on people’s lives and their activities was noted in the early 20th century by the professor V. Kubiyovych [1927]. Mochnachuk and Shypovych identified three stages of urbanization in Ukraine during the second half of the 20th century: 1) urbanization as a process of urban growth; 2) suburbanization – erosion of urban nuclei, formation of ag- glomerations; 3) rurbanization – urbanization of rural settlements within urban- ized areas [Mochnachuk, Shypovych 1972: 41-48].     Appendices I. Archival Sources Archival research for this monograph was conducted in Lviv, the former capital of Galicia, in 1983. To orient myself in the rich archival holdings of this city, I benefitted from the unpublished manuscript of Patricia K. Grimsted's forthcoming guide to Soviet Ukrainian archives and manuscript repositories' as well as from a number of published works.' Plans to use archives in Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk were frustrated, as was the plan to use the manuscript collection of the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (in Kiev). Work in the Austrian archives in 1982 did not uncover sources of direct relevance to the subject of this monograph, but the Viennese archives remain an important and little-explored repository of historical documentation on Galician history. The richest collection of unpublished sources on the history of Galicia during the Austrian period is located in the Central State Historical Archives of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv (U Tsentrainyi derzhavnyi istorychnyi arkhiv URSR u rn. Lvovi; abbre- viated as TsDIAL). The Central Archives have inherited the papers of various Galician government institutions and major civic organizations. Unfortunately, there is no published guide to these archives, although a number of articles describe aspects of their holdings.' The papers of the Presidium of the Galician Viceroy's Office (U Haiytske narnisnytstvo, rn. Lviv. Prezydiia) are contained in TsDIAL, fond 146, opysy 4-8 (and presumably others).     Serhii Koniukhov FEATURES OF THE OUN NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENT GENERATION IN THE TERRITORY OF THE RAVSKA DISTRICT Serhii Koniukhov1 DOI: https://doi.org/10.30525/978-9934-588-53-2-32 Abstract. The methods of the OUN at the beginning of World War II were determined by the historical circumstances. The opposition of the OUNs to the Polish authorities changed to the opposition to the occupying Soviet authorities. Because the Soviet authorities were wary of those who had already established themselves as anti-Polonization fighters (already considered nationalists and automatically fighters against the Soviet regime; they and their families were taken out of Western Ukraine), Ukrainian nationalists were forced to act underground. Their participation in the national liberation movement was mainly determined by the leadership of the OUN. Members of the OUN conducted mostly public outreach work in the Ravska district, distributing leaflets promoting the national idea in 1939-1941. The purpose of the work is to investigate the peculiarities of the resistance of Ukrainian nationalists to the occupation regimes in the territory of the Ravska district of the OUN before World War II and to analyze the organizational and military-political activities of the OUN. The dynamics of the share of the Jewish population in urban settlements of the Lviv Oblast is studied, and it is found that it sharply decreased after the events of the World War II, primarily as a result of the Holocaust. A map of the share of the Jewish population in the urban settlements of the Oblast in 1939 is developed.

The brunt of the fight fell upon the shoulders of the Organization of the Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Constantly hunted by the hated Soviet Russian security police and troops, and themselves carrying on the fight against the representatives of the inhuman terror regime, the authors of this pamphlet had to remain unknown to the general public. To live ahvays with a finger on the trigger is not the same as to live in the quiet cloisters of a university, and the writing done under such circumstances must of necessity be imperfect. Nevertheless, the pamphlet is a rich source of factual material about the cruel methods used by the occupying power in suppressing the struggle of the Ukrainian people for freedom and national independence between 1944 and 1946, in the early years of the renewed occupation of Ukraine by Bolshevist Russian imperialists. The vast scale of the operations undertaken by the Kremlin masters to crush the Ukrainian resistance, illustrated by hundreds of incontrovertible local instances, proves also the importance that was attached by Moscow to this struggle, and what a danger it represented and still represents to the Russian Communist empire.
