Is Graffiti Art? March 19-23, 2014

From American GIs in World War II writing “Kilroy is Here” to Banksy today, modern graffiti has been around a long time. But is it art? The latest CBS News Sunday Morning Pulse Poll shows that a slim majority of Americans say “no”. 44% think graffiti is legitimate art, like painting or sculpture, while 51% say it is not. When this question was asked three years ago, Americans felt similarly.

Who thinks graffiti is art and who doesn’t? There is little difference by gender, income, or education. Age, however, is a factor. Two-thirds of Americans under 35 think graffiti is art, but they aren’t so sure the older they get. Americans between 35 and 44 are divided, while most who are 45 and older do not think graffiti is art. Seniors are the least likely to see graffiti as art – just 23% think so. Is Graffiti Art? Political philosophy is also a prominent indicator. Two thirds of self-described liberals think graffiti is art, while two-thirds of conservatives think it is not art. Moderates are divided. Most Republicans (69%) think graffiti is not art, while Democrats and independents are divided.

Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by Social Science Research Solutions of Media, PA. Phone numbers were dialed from samples of both standard land-line and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups may be higher. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.
