  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

ROMEO & JULIET Student’s Book A play and film study guide Educasia Education in Context Before You Start… 1. You are about to read and watch the story of Romeo and Juliet. Look at the two pictures below, and try to answer the following questions: Who are Romeo and Juliet? What is their relationship? How will their relationship change throughout the story? How will the film and play be different? 2. Read the following introduction to the play, and answer the questions. This is the most famous of all Shakespeare’s plays, first printed in 1597. Romeo and Juliet meet, fall in love, and promise to be faithful to each other forever. Love is strong, but not as strong as family tradition, or hate, or revenge. Like young people all over the world, Romeo and Juliet want the right to decide their future for themselves, but in the end, their families are too powerful for them. Romeo and Juliet cannot live without each other, and if they are not allowed to marry and live together, there is only one way out. According to the introduction, are the following sentences true (T), false (F) or doesn’t it say (DS)? a. Romeo and Juliet have been lovers since they were children. b. Romeo and Juliet’s families are enemies. c. Romeo and Juliet are married. d. Their families eventually allow them to be together. 1 Characters in the Play The Montague family Lord Montague Lady Montague Romeo, the Montagues’ son Nurse, from Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin the 1968 film The Capulet family Lord Capulet Lady Capulet Juliet, the Capulets’ daughter Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin from the 1916 film.

Theirs is a world hearing people rarely even glimpse, even in Rochester, N.Y. CBS News Sunday Morning Correspondent Martha Teichner reports. The Matchetts are so like everybody else. But, at the same time, they are so different. The Matchetts have technology to thanks for a quality of life and access to the rest of the world that was unknown to the deaf a generation ago. Such technology has enabled the whole family to have more fun. But as he watches his children enjoy themselves, Doug recalls the pain of a childhood defined by isolation. "I scared people away. Some kids made fun of me," he says. It helped that, growing up, he was a champion swimmer. But public school was lonely and hard for him. In Doug's estimation, he lives in a no-man's land: "To the hearing world, I'm deaf, and to the deaf world, I'm hearing...because I can speak." And he was expected to speak and lip read exclusively so he could get along in the hearing world.
