    AUGUST EDITION AUGUST A message from class eleven-: After returning from the summer vacation, there has been a lot of enthusiasm among the class elevens as well as in the other classes too. The soccer season, the most exhilarating sports season of the year has also arrived. Not being able to reach the semi-finals of the Jackie Tournament was disappointing for us, but we must under- stand that one must learn from one’s mistakes and move on. After the Board results, we heaved sighs of relief and geared our- selves for an exciting new term. There are a lot of new faces in class and it is fun making new friends. Interacting with new people helps us to learn a lot more whether it is about a new country or the interests, hobbies and general views of another individual. Everyone is very excited about the upcoming House plays even though our first terminal examinations are round the corner. We have started pre- paring for them and hope to score good marks.     COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

With all fixtures locked down, one cricket fan lets his mind wander to what might have been. Vasant Raji, India’s oldest first-class cricketer, passed away recently. He was 100 years old. His passing, perhaps, is a time for cricket to remember and cele- brate some of the other great stalwarts of Indian test cricket too – especially when the coronavirus pandemic has meant no sporting events can take place. India played its ever first ever test match at the historic Lords Cricket Ground in 1932 against England. Forty-two years later, in 1974, India played its first ever limited-over international, also in England. TO JOIN THE AUSTRALIAN DAVIS CUP TENNIS FOUNDATION A.B.N. 90 004 905 060 Foundation President, Neale Fraser, AO MBE says “Join me in supporting a brighter future for Australian Tennis.” ABOUT THE FOUNDATION The Australian Davis Cup Tennis Foundation was formed in September 1971 with the objective of providing financial assistance towards the cost of sending Australia’s team overseas for Davis Cup matches. Over the years, a policy has emerged of funding the development of young Australian players, showing Davis Cup potential, by direct player or official team assistance or, as currently, by financial support for selected Player Development Programs of Tennis Australia. Within the above policy the Foundation has given financial support to individual players, squads, official teams, player development programmes, Satellite circuits, Futures and Challenger events in excess of $1,900,000. Such financial support has significantly upgraded the status of these circuits, events, and programmes. Currently, the Foundation has around 1800 members from all Australian States and Territories and the following countries: New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, France, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Netherlands and Thailand. The membership fee entitles members to apply for "Priority Access" to purchase a limited number of tickets for the Australian Open. Members may also purchase tickets for all Davis Cup ties being played in Australia and, wherever possible, join a touring party to overseas Davis Cup ties. All members will receive an informative 'Members Newsletter' on at least three occasions each year. The Foundation invites new members to help increase our financial assistance to the development of young Australian players.
