Association Development Update

Thank you to all the Associations who completed the Association Development Checklist. The results have thrown up some interesting information in regards to where the Associations are at and provided a starting point for the Association Development Officer role.

Over the next few weeks there will be a Members only section on the Basketball WA website that will contain different resources that Associations can use and other handy information. If there is something specific that Associations would like to see in a Members only section please email Association Development Officer, Paul Campaner at [email protected] with your suggestions and we will get that information uploaded. There will be a login and password sent out to all Associations in the very near future so you can access this section.

Paul will soon be attending a meeting of all Association Development Officers where the 5-on-5 Program will be discussed amongst other topics. The Australian Sports Commission has released a Healthy Club Check that will also be discussed and how that can be incorporated into this assessment. In regards to valuable resources, this will be a key meeting to see what other states do well, what works and doesn’t work.

A case study book of what our associations do well is being compiled and will be sent out to all Associations once finalised. Associations are asked that if they have a programme that works well in their association in regards to Recruitment, Retention, Development and Recognition of Volunteers, Coaches, Referees and Players can you please send it through to Paul Campaner. Any programme that is submitted that is used in the Case Study book will be rewarded with a Coaching Clinic conducted by either a West Coast Waves player or coach at your association. The case study book is about celebrating our wins and what we do well.

Sporting Pulse Training

Sam Fewster from Sporting Pulse recently spent some time at the Basketball WA office conducting training sessions on Sporting Pulse. Representatives from Cockburn, Mandurah, Perry Lakes, Wanneroo and Basketball WA staff took up the offer of some training and from all reports found these sessions very helpful. The 1on1 sessions were setup so anyone who wanted some further knowledge could ask specific questions around what they wanted to know. We will certainly look at this in the future to get Sam or another representative from Sporting Pulse over to conduct some more sessions. Paul Campaner will be in touch to ask how you use Sporting Pulse so we can set up a consistent approach to the usage of this system.

Recent Level 0/1 ref course Lakeside Basketball hosted an Association Beginner course on Saturday, the 26th of May and a great turnout of sixteen partici- pants came along to begin their first steps in the referee accreditation pathway. Conducted by Rod Hislop, the participants were shown the ropes on what officiating a game of basketball is about and empowered with the skills that will allow them to referee games almost immediately.

On the same weekend, a Level 1 referee course was also conducted and facilitated by Carey McAllan. Carey took fifteen keen and budding referees through a two-day education seminar that ultimately can lead to a Nationally accredited qualification for participants. The course, held at the WABC, is the stepping stone towards achieving “black and white” referee accreditation.

Both courses received positive feedback and Basketball WA is always pleased to offer education and learning experiences for our community of officials.

Brett’s Blurb If you have a basketball question or topic relating to coaching/teaching/development that you would like to be discussed, why not send it in so Brett Coxsedge (BWA High Performance Manager) can answer it.

Variety is the spice of life! It is always good to talk to coaches about basketball. As is often the case, I find many coaches have their own philosophies relating to our wonderful game. Also, many coaches teach the game differently. The end result of these differences is that we have a vast variety of coaches teaching our kids how to play the game of basketball in their own unique way.

One thing, which is uniform across the board, is that coaches who give their players a good grounding in the fundamentals of basketball will no doubt reap the benefits. I can’t stress the importance of spending an appropriate amount of time dur- ing training sessions working on fundamentals. Once your players have acquired the fundamentals to an appropriate level it is much easier to teach them the other team aspects of the game.

Believe me, I understand that teaching fundamentals to young players is not easy. Firstly you need to have a lot of patience. Spending one session on footwork will not make a player a “gazelle” on the court. Similarly, becoming a good shooter re- quires hours of repetition shooting the ball with the correct technique (don’t kid me that little Johnny is already a great shooter because he scores 30 points a game!)

The most important aspect is paying attention to detail and giving clear, brief teaching points to get your message across. If your athletes are able to understand what you are telling them (a blank look on their face usually means they don’t) then they will be able to work at becoming a better player by training correctly.

I challenge coaches of all levels to keep working to become better teachers. If you need help, ask. Remember that there are many ways to skin a cat!

The Senior Domestic Competition; Winter 2012

The Senior Domestic Competition; Winter 2012, has become our largest ever season with a record 188 teams playing in our nightly competi- tions at the WA Basketball Centre, Floreat. The mixed division has been a welcome addition to Wednesday nights adding to the already pop- ular men’s and women’s competitions.

With the competition continuing to grow this means Basketball WA is now looking for more basketball referees to join our team!

Basketball refereeing is a great way to keep fit while earning cash! We offer excellent pay rates and training to all our referees, so if you are interested, whether qualified or a beginner, please contact Adam on 6272 0753 or email

Melissa Marsh's 200th SBL game

At the tender age of eight, a golden- haired girl stepped onto the courts at Willetton Basketball Stadium for her first game of Hoops with their junior program. Six years later the same girl made her SBL debut for the Tigers. But now, at the ripe old age of 26, Melissa Marsh has cracked her 200th SBL game and is still representing her beloved . Marsh reached the milestone in Round 4 with a win over the Rockingham Flames, but the achievement comes almost as a shock to Marsh, who sched- uled in breaks to refresh her body from a busy basketball career in WNBL and national competitions. “I didn’t really expect to be up at the 200 mark,” Marsh said. “I had a couple of seasons where I haven’t played SBL and travelled and had some time off. “But I think it’s a great achievement. I played it for one club, the Tigers, which is hopefully where I’ll end my career one day.” The guard’s time at the Tigers has been nothing short of a success. Every year Marsh has been involved with the club, the team has made it to the SBL finals and she has won four SBL Grand Finals in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011. But last year’s one point win over East Perth was the stand out. “Obviously winning the championships [is a highlight],” Marsh said. “It’s nice to come back to Willetton and play and be successful. But definitely the Championships, last year’s Grand Final win- ning by one point was awesome.” The current Willetton Tigers team is made up of plenty of young teenagers, with Marsh the oldest in the group. Although it is quite daunting for the captian, it wasn’t so long ago that she was in the same position. “Some of the kids are 11, 12 years younger than me, which makes me feel extremely old,” she said. “But that’s where I started and I learnt from some of the best: Megan Clarke, Danielle Ramsay, Sue Williams, those types I learnt so much off,” Marsh said. Marsh’s love for the club is evident through her dedication to the team, by mentoring the young players coming through the ranks to SBL and leading by example. “It’s one of the important things that we give back to our club teams and I’m really passionate at giving back to the Tigers,” Marsh added. “They’ve done so much for me, it’s where I started my career and we’ve got some really talented young kids. “I just think I’ve got a lot to offer the young kids and still being able to play a bit. “It’s my role now to come back and teach these juniors what I know and teach them about culture at the club.

Olympian Set To Roll With Waves

The West Coast Waves have add- ed to their big name players for the 2012/13 WNBL season with Tall Ferns forward, Lisa Wallbutton, joining the squad. The New Zealand native comes to Perth after spending last sea- son with the alongside fellow new Waves player Deanna Smith. Wallbutton said knowing Smith’s style of play on the court will help the Waves find their feet fast. “We spent a season training to- gether, I didn’t play big minutes in Bendigo, but that would defi- nitely help, I know how she plays and she’s got a lot to offer the group herself so it should be a really good year,” Wallbutton said. The 26-year-old is backed with experience and has been in the New Zealand national team since 2005 and has been coached by the current Tall Ferns and West Coast Waves head coach, Kennedy Kereama, for a few years and said his influence was the deciding factor to make the move to the west. “He’s a fantastic coach and I just saw it as an opportunity to play some good basketball,” Wallbutton said. “I think he’s going to do great things for the program so that’s something that I want to be a part of.” The 183cm forward thought her height and experience will help give the Waves the edge they need to be a strong and competitive team this coming season. “I’ve got a fair bit of international experience, I’ve been around the League for a few years now and I bring a bit of height and rebounding that’s probably one of the main things that I’ll bring to the team,” she said. Wallbutton said, with a pure love for the sport, she has many highlights in her career including representing her country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and winning a Silver Medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. “Definitely playing at the Olympics; that was always a childhood dream growing up to play at the Olympics so that would definitely be the pinnacle. Though the Commonwealth Games that was a pretty big highlight to win a medal there,” Wall- button said. As she prepares for her second Olympics appearance Wallbutton has turned to the State League in Victoria where she has been ripping up the floor and averaging over 15 points and almost 11 rebounds per game, but she humbly admitted she is happy to be playing. “It’s nice to just to be out on the court and playing, but hopefully I’ll keep up some form for the WNBL season, that would be good,” she said. As well as playing for Bendigo Spirit last season, Wallbutton has also played for and the Dandenong Randers since her WNBL debut in the 2006/07 season. Wallbutton joins other Waves signings Smith and Melissa Marsh.
