E nagy értékű folyóirat repertóriumát a Mikes International hamarosan kiadja elektronikusan, bevezet ő tanulmány kíséretében. The work has been performed by the co-workers of the Hungarian Electronic Library. Mikes International will publish electronically the repertory of the periodical soon, including an introductory essay. The electronic version of the periodical can be accessed at the following address: http://epa.oszk.hu/szellem_es_elet The Böhm-Bartók Society invited applications for its BÖHM -BARTÓK SCHOLARSHIP on 10 January 2007 entitled ‘ The Philosophy of Károly Böhm ’. No papers were received by the Society until the deadline, hence this year the prize will not be awarded. The Society also invited applications for its BÖHM -BARTÓK PRIZE on 15 March 2007 entitled ‘ Kolozsvár School of Philosophy – Baden School of Philosophy — A Critical Analysis of the Parallels and Differences between them ’. Нанзатов Калмыцкий научный центр Российской академии наук, Российская Федерация В статье был дополнен и расширен опыт авторского исследования происхождения бурятских этнонимов хоогой, онгой, онхотой, ирхидэй, холтубай, достоверно извест- ных с XVII в. по русским источникам. Интерес к этой группе этнонимов обоснован их родством с известными среди тувинцев этнонимами куулар, ондар, иргит, хол, а также с предположительно раннетувинским этнонимом онкот, имеющими парал- лели также у алтайцев, хакасов, якутов, киргизов, казахов, алтайских урянхайцев, дархатов, хотогойтов, халха, хамниган, уратов и др. В основе методики исследования лежит словообразовательный и семантический анализ этнонимов, а также сравни- тельно-исторический, лингвогеографический и этимологический методы. Наличие указанных этнонимов в бурятской среде в очередной раз отражает многогранность тюрко-монгольских взаимосвязей. Принадлежность их единой груп- пе племен, генеалогическим предком которой был Обогон, образ которого в якутских преданиях известен как Омогой/Омогон, позволяет проследить тувинско-бурятско- якутские этнические связи. Наличие этнонима холтубай в этническом составе бурят, зафиксированного в XVII в., позволяет установить верхнюю дату его существования как минимум за столетие до проникновения русских в Бурятию. Фиксация окончаний род. п. –oi, с вариантами –dei и –toi, а также наличие окончания мн. ч. –s в якутской форме эргис позволяет уста- новить верхнюю дату временем среднемонгольского языка. Наличие этнонимов в тувинской среде — куулар, ондар, иргит, хол — показывает параллельное развитие этих вариантов. В результате исследования был выявлен раннетувинский (тобасский) пласт в этническом составе бурят; вы- явленные ареалы распространения этнонимов позволили очертить зоной их исходного распространения Восточно- саянско-Прихубсугульский регион.

  • Papal Legate and Sino-Western Contact in Mongol-Yuan Eurasia, 1206-1368
    ABSTRACT ZHANG, ZHAN. Beyond Preaching: Papal Legate and Sino-Western Contact in Mongol-Yuan Eurasia, 1206-1368. (Under the direction of Dr. Xiaolin Duan). After the foundation of Genghis Khan in 1206, the Mongol Empire quickly took up a prominent role on the world stage from the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries. Through numerous conquests across Eurasia, the Mongols established a vast territorial domain connecting Asia and Europe. As a result, transnational political and cultural contacts of European society to Mongol Asia begun in the mid-thirteenth century, benefitted from the increasing mobility of people including soldiers, missionaries, and merchants. This thesis examines the visits of Catholic missionaries to the Mongol-Yuan dynasty (1206-1368) in the context of the conversation and negotiation between Western Europe and the Mongols. It explores various purposes that motived these envoys sent by the Pope or European King to the Mongol court in different periods, how they reached out to and observed the Mongols, and their role in Sino-Western communications. By analyzing correspondences between the Pope and Mongol Khan, as well as missionaries’ reports and travel notes, this thesis looks into how the intentions and strategies of these visitors changed before and after the fragmentation of the Mongol Empire in the 1260s. This thesis argues that the division of the Mongol Empire and the consequent establishment of the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) was a significant turning point in the history of Mongol-European contact. Before the empire disintegrating into four khanates, Mongol army was considered as a potential military threat to Western Europe. The Pope therefore sent legates to request the Mongols’ conversion for the sake of peace and also to check out Mongol’s military plan.

    On Buddhist Art Inheritance from The Late-Qin Chang’an to The Northern- Wei Pingcheng [America] Chang Qing The article Chinese appears Abstract: The Tanyao Five Caves which are periodized into the first phase of the Yungang Grottoes from page 004 to 024. were commissioned to be constructed for the merits and virtues of the first five emperors of the Northern-Wei Dynasty. With the manpower, material and financial resources gathered from the annexation wars in the North, above all, the craftsmen and Buddhist priests from the capital Changan of the Late-Qin kingdom, the ruler of the Northern-Wei dynasty implemented the giant project. The Late-Qin Chang’an playing as the political and Buddhist center in northern China in the late period of the Sixteen Kingdoms carried forward the Mahayana Buddhism introduced from the Western region. It is studied that the Mahayana Buddhist statues and murals of the Western-Qin Kingdom in Cave 169 of Binglingsi grottoes in Yongjing of Gansu Province resulted from the influence of the Late-Qin Chang’an. The construction of the Tanyao Five Caves followed the Northern-Wei Buddhist tradition before the persecution against Buddhists in Emperor Taiwu’s reign as well as the Buddhist tradition of the Late-Qin Chang’an, which can be learned from the feature shared by the stone sculptures of the caves and the incised Buddhist images on the Northern-Wei sarcophagus in Datong and the Western- Qin sculptures and murals in Cave 169 of Binglingsi Grottoes. It is the embodiment of the Northern- Wei dynasty inheriting the Buddhism of Late-Qin Chang’an, specifically, by the Buddhist images of the Tanyao five caves in theme and style.

The article discusses the local perception of the two archaeological sites that create the native land of Dariganga ethnic group in Sukhbaatar province of south-eastern Mongolia. The first site is a complex of four stone statues at the south-eastern foot of Dari Mountain in Dariganga county of Sukhbaatar province. The second one is a complex of eight tombs with two stone statues at Tavan Tolgoi Mountain in Ongon county of Sukhbaatar province. These two sites and relics found in them are highly respected by the Dariganga people who claim to be the descendants of the people buried in these tombs, thus disagreeing with the researchers’ assumption that Dariganga ethnic group were not indigenous inhabitants of the area.The article gives a detailed description of the archaeological sites and relics as well as the oral stories and believes connected with them.     Two thousand years of the Church’s mission in Asia: waves of evangelization, holiness and martyrdom * REV. FR. FELIPE GOMEZ, S.J. INTRODUCTION Standing at the threshold of the third millennium, we are invited to look back to the two thousand years behind us, not only to “remember” –which is so Christian– but also to draw lessons for a future open to the hope we have to share. And we do this in a Church which enters a new and amazing human era, and that, therefore, is expected to exhibit characteristics different from those of the first and second millennium, always, of course, within the continuity which the identity demands: the same Church, same mission, but in a new Asia, with a new way of being Church. We shall focus on the “waves of evangelization,” with special attention to martyrdom and holiness. The analogy of “waves” makes sense, since we detect in the events themselves the phenomenon of high and low levels of missionizing and Christian life, observing periods of high tide of Christian presence in vast territories, followed by a low tide of Christian recess, leaving a barren ground to begin all over again. This phenomenon has no equal in other continents. History is not an “exact science”; therefore the division into periods is a question of convenience which does not exclude other choices. We have divided this whole history into five segments, which we call: Foundational wave, the first millennium, the so called “Pax Mongolica”, the Age of Discoveries and, finally, our own time. FOUNDATIONAL WAVE: THE APOSTLES AND POST-APOSTOLIC EVANGELIZERS We call “foundational” the age of the Apostles until the establishment of local churches, with an identity of doctrine, governance and cult still discernible today.

It is situated in the south of West Siberia bordering the Mongolian Republic and the Chinese People’s Republic to the south-east, the Kazakh Republic to the south- west, adjoining the Kemerovo region and Khakasija to the north and Tyva to the east. The Altai people live throughout the region, constituting the majority (from 55 to 90% of the population) in the eastern and central parts. The Russians live throughout the territory, as well as being the largest group (from 60 to 90%) in the north, north-west and south-west. The Kazakhs live mostly in the south-east. For almost three hundred years Altai and Russian peoples have lived side by side and this intercourse has resulted in the adoption of numbers of Altai names by the Russian people and of many Russian names by the Altai. On the whole the naming of places in the Mountain Altai by the Russians is suffi ciently recent for the circumstances to be part of well-recorded history. Of the 10,000 place-names of the Mountain Altai region I have at my disposal at present, slightly more than 7,000 correlate with the lexemes of the Altai (the language of the Altai people) and Russian languages and their dialects. Both languages spoken in the region have absorbed place-names of the former inhabitants, thus becoming receiving languages.
