News Release NEWS RELEASE Contact: Kim Marggraf Background:www.kohleducation.org 920-946-3640 mobile, 920-457-1727 office [email protected] For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 6, 2019 2019 Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholarship, Initiative Scholarship, Fellowship and Leadership Award Recipients Announced MILWAUKEE — The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Student Scholarship, Teacher Fellowship, and Principal Leadership program has announced recipients of the 304 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students, teachers, and principals. Awards in the amount of $6,000 are being made to 100 teachers, 16 principals, and their schools, and $10,000 scholarships will be given to 188 graduating high school students. Student Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond. Teacher Fellowship recipients are educators who have been chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. Principal Leadership Award recipients are school principals who are being recognized for setting high standards for instruction, achievement and character, and creating a climate to best serve students, families, staff, and community. Student Excellence Scholarship, Teacher Fellowship, and Principal Leadership Award recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, and representatives of education-related associations and the program’s co- sponsors: the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators, and the Wisconsin Parents Association. Student Initiative Scholarship recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. “I think it is significant that Wisconsin’s students, teachers, principals, and schools are recognized for their devotion to education and learning," said Dr. Chris Cody, WCRIS board president. “Across Wisconsin, our communities benefit from Herb Kohl's longstanding and generous philanthropy to our educators and students,” said State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor. (more) Herb Kohl Educational Foundation 2019 Student Excellence Scholarships Page 1 The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman, in 1990. To date the foundation has awarded $17.8 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools. “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future,” Kohl said. Award recipients were notified of their awards on March 4, 2019. Regional recognition luncheons honoring the recipients will be held in a few weeks. On March 4, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation announced the recipients of student Initiative Scholarships, student Excellence Scholarships, teacher Fellowships and principal Leadership awards. The March 24 luncheon will recognize the accomplishments of the area's outstanding students, educators and administrators. Twenty nine teacher Fellowship recipients, 26 Excellence Scholarship recipients, and 21 Initiative Scholarship recipients will be honored. Principal Leadership award recipient Amy Fassbender is unable to attend the event but will be honored at a luncheon on April 13 in Greenfield. On March 20, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation announced the 2018 recipients of Initiative Scholarships, Excellence Scholarships, teacher Fellowships, and principal Leadership Awards. The April 14 luncheon will recognize the accomplishments of the area’s outstanding students, educators, and administrators. Nineteen teacher Fellowship recipients, 22 Excellence Scholarship recipients, 15 Initiative Scholarship recipients, and two principal Leadership Award recipients will be honored. Kim Marggraf, spokesperson for the Herb Kohl Foundation, said that Herb Kohl, representatives of co-sponsoring organizations — the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools, Wisconsin Cooperative Educational Service Agencies, Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Parents Association, Association of Wisconsin School Administrators — and the families and friends of south central and southwest Wisconsin award recipients will be part of this program. The Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholarship was established by Herb Kohl to provide scholarships to graduating Wisconsin high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence, outstanding leadership, citizenship, community service, integrity, and other special talents. The Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom.

    To the Grantsburg School Board As science teachers and members of the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST), we are writing to you because we are concerned about the recent action the Grantsburg School Board has taken with respect to the teaching of evolution in the Grantsburg Schools. First, permit us to introduce ourselves. WSST was founded in 1958 and with a current membership of almost 2,000, we are the largest organization in Wisconsin devoted to the advancement of science education. Our purpose is to promote, support and improve science education in the state of Wisconsin by providing leadership, advocacy, and programs to enhance the teaching and learning of science. WSST is a chapter of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), long a leader in science education nationally. The motion recently adopted by the Grantsburg Board, “When theories of origin are taught, students will study various scientific models/theories of origins and identify the scientific data supporting each,” is, in our professional opinion, terribly misguided. To our knowledge, the only viable scientific theory in this area is the theory of evolution. Your motion, by its simple presence, implies that the Board believes that there are other, competing scientific theories. The fact that your motion is limited to “theories of origin” and not to the entirety of science, similarly suggests that the Board has something specific in mind with respect to the teaching of “origins.” We encourage you to closely examine the NSTA position statement on The Teaching of Evolution. This statement can be viewed on the web at: http://www.nsta.org/main/pdfs/PositionStatement_Evolution.pdf The statement says quite clearly that “evolution has not been emphasized in science curricula in a manner commensurate to its importance because of official policies, intimidation of science teachers, the general public’s misunderstanding of evolutionary theory, and a century of controversy.
