THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

+ The First Reading : Proverbs 9:1-6

+ Psalm 34:8-14 Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! Come, children, and listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who among you loves life and desires long life to enjoy prosperity? Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him! Keep your tongue from evil-speaking and your lips from lying words. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him!

+ Second Reading : Ephesians 5:15-20

Gradual Hymn/Acclamation

+ THE HOLY GOSPEL : John 6:51-58

We pray for all people in their need: let your loving presence be known to them, bless and uphold them. – Father, unite all things in Christ. Your people have known the ravages of war and hatred: grant that they may know the peace left by your Son. – Father, unite all things in Christ. Fulfil the hopes of those who sleep in your peace: bring them to that final resurrection when you will be all in all. – Father, unite all things in Christ.

SAINTS THIS WEEK -

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux : 20 August

Bernard was born at Fontaines, near Dijon, in France in the year 1090. He entered the Benedictine abbey at Cîteaux in 1112, taking with him many of his young companions, some of whom were his own brothers. He was a leader of the reform within Benedictinism at this time and in 1115 was sent to es tablish a new monastery at a place he named Clairvaux, or valley of light. Though times were hard, he built up the com munity with his remarkable qualities of leadership. Bernard preached widely and powerfully and proved himself a theolo gian of renown. Literally hundreds of houses were founded on the Cîteaux or Cistercian system and Bernard's influence on his own generation and beyond was immense. He died on this day in 1153.

Romans 12.21

A preacher was completing a temperance sermon. With great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river!" The congregation nodded their approval. With even greater emphasis he added, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river, too!" The people clapped and were saying "Amen." And then finally, he concluded, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river!" As he sat down, the song leader then stood up quite cautiously and announced, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365: "Shall We Gather at the River."

Dear All,

I hope that you are all well following the lovely hot summer that we have had. I wanted to let you all know that we are planning to re-start The Black Isle Youth Fellowship fol- lowing the summer break.

Last year was very encouraging, with around 8 young people regularly coming along to the group. All the young people who came had connections with local churches, but we hope that the programme is also accessible to young people who are not from a church background. We would really appreciate if you would pray for the year ahead. Our hope is for the young people who know Christ to grow in their Faith, and that others would come to know Him. We also hope that the Children would be an encouragement to one another in their Faith within their local and school setting.

This term we will aim to hold the YF on the first Saturday evening of the month (although this may change on 3rdNovember due to Bonfire night). We’re going to be looking at the Gospel of John this term.

The First YF will take place on 1st September in Fortrose Town hall from 7:00-8.30 pm. We would also be grateful if you would pass the details on to anyone who you think may be interested. Please use the flier below that can be printed out.

With Kind Regards, Dave and Sally Knight
