It went to a commission bid from Australia. SV Aero £7k Personally, I thought that prices paid for some of the spares were rather high, especially once you add the buyer’s premium. For example, a lot including a Family steering column (nice condition), drop arm, drag-link and steering arms went for £420. Perhaps I’m just out of touch.

OHV Aero £19k

Interestingly, the auctioneer had difficulty getting an opening bid on the side-valve Aero and she sold to the maiden bidder for just £7k. All prices quoted are plus 20% buyer’s commission on the spares and 12% on the cars. I came away with my cheque book intact!

13 Round Up When the Editor joined as a callow youth in 1965, The Bulletin was then edited by one Peter Thompson, our esteemed Librarian and Proof Reader to the Gentry. In those dark days 2-speeders were called “Prims and Barbs” the primitives had no brakes and the barbarians were barbarians. The column that John introduced as Club Noticeboard was then referred to as Round Up. So Rear Deaders , retaining John’s useful addition, it will henceforth appear as this page, containing a motley of news, appeals, notifications and the suchlike pieces. Those Missing F-Types

Having read my article in the September So, let’s start with the straight forward period 2013 Bulletin, Roland Servais asked how – 1948 to 1952 many post-war F-Supers were produced. There were 99 F-Supers produced, all with Getting to an accurate answer is not easy full details of engine number, gearbox because the Morgan Factory records were number and despatch details. basically an order book that was updated as Of those, 51 appear on the MTWC Registry production progressed. In 1946 and 1947 – a survival rate of 51% many entries only show the chassis number and the name of the agent placing the order For 1946 and 1947. with no information on engine number, The total number of F-Super chassis listed gearbox number or despatch date. It is likely is 165, yet only 14 of those cars appear in that most, if not all of those “blank” orders the MTWC Registry – a theoretical survival never turned into Morgans. rate of only 8.5% which is unrealistically This situation is not surprising when you low. remember that, immediately after the Second However, if we exclude the chassis numbers World War, there was a clamour for transport for which there are no engine, gearbox or – a clamour that could not be fulfilled by the despatch details, then the total F-Supers scarce resources of the munitions focused produced in this period was just – 28. The British industry. Orders were placed and true number may be a little higher than 28, accepted, perhaps in good faith by the motor but not by much given the manufacturing manufacturers, but with little hope of restrictions of the period. fulfilment.

In Summary. I believe that a reasonable assessment of the number of F-Supers produced and surviving is therefore:

Period Production Survivors Survival Rate

1938 to 39 50 15 30% (see Sept. 2013 Bulletin)

1946 to 47 Approx. 30 14 46%

1948 to 52 99 51 51%

Total 180 80 44%

This conclusion contradicts the information I presented on page 45 of the April 2008 Bulletin. When I wrote that earlier article I hadn’t considered the idea that chassis numbers might have been allocated without cars being produced. We live and learn.

Reply to John Rowland’s Letter David K Wright

I read your recent letter (March Bulletin) will be aware of the need to drive away carefully concerning rear drum sprocket teeth with great to avoid half shaft breakage - I speak from interest although my current Morgan is a B type limited but bitter experience. 2-speeder. However I do recall my M-type I assume an overall bottom gear ratio of 12.4 for having a low speed sprocket drum similar to that a 3-speeder. This figure includes the reduction of 3 speeders, but the higher low speed gearing obtained from the 18teeth and 38 teeth cross of the 2 -speeder means that the available torque shaft and rear wheel sprockets. at the driving sprocket would be less. At the cross shaft we are only concerned with Nonetheless several aspects of your letter the gearbox ratio and the worm drive ratio. This caused me to repeat the calculations on the chain will be 12.4 x 38/18= 5.9:1 Thus the speed tension and its impact on sprocket teeth. reduction between engine and cross shaft is In starting such a calculation we need to select a 5.9:1 and the torque at the cross shaft is torque figure for the engine, of course this increased accordingly cannot be precise but is rather a ‘likely’ figure. So now the torque is 72 x 5.9Nm =420Nm In any case all of the following calculations can (310lbft) be scaled if other torque values are to be used. Unfortunately ADI has a limited temperature range. John Rowland’s reponse: This is a great article! I think the Bulletin needs more of this sort of thing... perhaps not all would agree.... (?) but there are still some members who regard an interest in Morgan 3-wheelers as essentially a technical matter; and I'm one of 'em. I had absolutely no idea that chain technology had got as far as instrumented chain links...do you have a photo of one? It would be just the thing for the Bulletin. (Show the 5-speeder lot that the proper Morgans have the high-tech edge!) I can now appreciate that the engine torque does tend to concentrate on the first few teeth as the chain leaves the sprocket on the 'tight side'. What is remarkable is that such an apparently crude method of power transmission works so well. I must have done several hundred racing starts, er,...most of them at race meetings, and have never broken a tooth, but nearly all would have been with an SG iron drum sprocket. I have tried to be fair to fine-grain C.I. and didn't want to imply any criticism of Mogspares, but I do prefer the former material. Austempered Ductile Iron is another revelation. What temperature can it stand? I once deliberately drove down a mile-long hill applying the back brake continuously, then stopped, jumped out and jammed a thermocouple probe between a sprocket tooth and a chain roller...the reading was 200C! In the 1970s when racers had to make do with tuned 1930s 'touring' V-twins built up from tired original bits, the poor tensile strength of fine-grain iron was demonstrated quite often. See photo. How thick is that cylinder wall? 3mm perhaps?

THE 7th DUTCH RUN - DOKKUM June 6 - 9 2014 The runs will be held on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th (Whit Sunday) in Friesland and Groningen. Day One we will drive into the province Groningen and the Day Two we’ll stay in Friesland. We will travel mostly on small and quiet roads, have coffee and lunch now and then, and off again through rustic small towns and hamlets. Of course we will make stops to walk through a town, to visit a ‘borg’ (stately old house of country nobility), a hamlet or a mound, see beautiful old waterworks and... We have started our work for the days, but the real programme still has to be made - time enough to make it a beautiful event again! This part of the North of the Netherlands is flat, with amazing lots of water and not crowded at all. When you stay longer: the cities Leeuwarden or Groningen and some isles are nearby and nice to visit.

Hotel De Posthoorn, Dokkumer. D okkumer Nieuwe Nieuwe. The most important thing is arranged: we have found a small hotel within the centre of the small fortified city of Dokkum (14.000 inh.). The hotel has 34 rooms (of which several are in an annexe about 25 metres further down the road). A neighbour is offering us a small parking place, cosy for the three-wheelers, but full is full. Trailers and tow cars have to be parked outside town (distance 350m- you have to pay; or 450m – free, opposite an old peoples home). We stay in Hotel De Posthoorn, Diepswal 21, 9101 LA Dokkum. We have arranged a fixed price for the days and they gave us 20 rooms in option closed on 31 January 2014 Later: ‘on availability’. Bookings must be made DIRECTLY to the hotel, ONLY by email ([email protected]). Arranged prices for the weekend: €380 for 2 persons and €235 for 1 person. Included are: room, breakfast, dinner/buffet in the evenings (Fr., Sat. and Sun.) and tax; there are no further charges. An extra night before/after is €85 (for 2 p.) and €65 (for 1 p.) for room and breakfast only. When you mail the hotel for your reservation: use the code Morgan, give your name, full address and phone numbers (land line + mobile). Note: the hotel can charge for no show. (see www.khn.nl/uvh-en). PLEASE inform us when you have booked (phone 0031-(0)35 6010797 or mail [email protected]), so we know what we have to do for further arrangements. We are looking forward to meeting you!! Janny Hoekstra and Marten Van der Boon

42 A Registry Enquiry Steve Lister The Club Registrar, frequently gets email enquiries from members of the general public: My Father has found an old family photograph featuring he believes, his grandfather, William Wolton, dating from the early 20th century, driving a Morgan Three Wheeler, registration OB 688. I am trying through DVLA to find out when the photograph was taken, thus far without success. From the Birmingham registration it is likely the photograph was taken in the city. In case this registration is known to you or your members I would be very grateful to hear from them, thank you. Edward Wolton

46 FLOGGERY For Sale: Family Four. My late husband Peter Edney and I were both members of the club some years ago though not actively for a couple of years owing to my husbands illness. We had a lot of fun in this little car, but before it falls into total disrepair ,I thought this would be a good time to sell with the spring (hopefully) round the corner. Peter was in the process, and nearly finished, changing the cooling system from air to water before he died in 2008. It is kept in a garage with a cover and I have recently had it cleaned. (See photograph right ). It is on a custom made trailer. Before he became unwell in 2005 we had been on several club runs to France, and he had also been with a friend to France with the car road racing. The information from the V5 is as follows:- Chassis no is 82580, engine size is 998cc and the date of registration is 31.12.32. I have had the car valued by Bonhams who suggest that I might expect to sell it at auction for circa £25,000 complete with trailer but I am sure that, as we had so much fun as members of the Club, Peter would have liked to offer it first to members.
