Dear media representative,

Welcome to the quarter-finals of the Men’s EHF Cup 2015/16, the penultimate stage of the season before the EHF Cup Finals in Nantes. There were 60 teams on the starting grid this season, but only seven of them can still vie for the winners’ trophy. While the final tournament’s hosts HBC Nantes secured their place at the 2016 EHF Cup Finals on 14 and 15 May courtesy of their Group B win in the group phase, six other contenders face one more hurdle on their long road to Nantes.

Only this last step will determine which teams will meet a cruel fate of bowing out from the race with success within grasp and which enter the competition’s history books by reaching one of the most prestigious events of the season.

Already before knowing the names of all four EHF Cup Finals participants we can look forward to see two of the most powerful national leagues represented in Nantes as “Lady Fortune” set one all-French and one all-German pairing. Besides the hosting club, either St. Raphael Var Handball or Chambery Savoie Handball will represent the French league, while Frisch Auf Göppingen and SC Magdeburg will compete for the bragging rights of being the only club from German Bundesliga in Nantes.

Just three years ago the 2002 EHF Champions League winners from Magdeburg were eliminated by another German rival and eventual winner of the maiden EHF Cup Finals, Rhein-Neckar Löwen. In the very same season Göppingen succeeded in the quarter-finals only to stumble against Löwen in the semi-final.

On behalf of the European Handball Federation, I also welcome the delegations from , BM Granollers and , Bjerringbro-Silkeborg and there is no doubt that either the former or the latter will contribute to an attractive and exciting line-up of the final tournament.

None of the three quarter-final pairings has a true favourite or an outspoken outsider which means we are bound to see a half-dozen thrilling duels and await with excitement which three sides will join HBC Nantes.

I wish all six teams best of luck. There is a lot at the stake in the EHF Cup Quarter- finals and they all are ready to prove they deserve a place under spotlight among the continent’s elite clubs. To all fans in the arenas I wish a lot of fun and enjoyment at the matches of the EHF Cup Quarter-finals.

We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have.

We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season!

The Catalan team only needed to win or draw to be in the next round, but the Denmark’s side was very near to ruin the dream of Granollers.

Palau d’Esports de Granollers, the venue of the team, had the best attendance of the season to help its team to pass the round. Ferran Solé scored the goal that draw the game (24:24) and the Catalans reached the EHF Cup quarter-finals after 11 years.

17 1st ranked Group C BJERRINGBRO-SILKEBORG (DEN) After a three-year international absence, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg are back in the European Cup as one of three Danish contenders and they have high hopes for the competition.

Having signed tall left back Nicolaj Markussen before this season, they have a player in their squad who already has the experience of playing at the EHF Cup Finals, as he finished third with his former team Skjern in Berlin in May 2015.

Markussen replaced Norwegian legend Kristian Kjelling and with a good short-term support in his position, Allan Damgaard Espersen arrived from bankrupted HSV Hamburg in Bjerringbro at the end of January.

Their right back , Danish international at the EHF EURO 2016 in Poland, will go the opposite way after this season as he already signed for German side and another EHF Cup Quarter-finals participant SC Magdeburg.

Bjerringbro-Silkeborg with a nearly All-Danish squad, except Slovenians Peter Pucelj Playing hall and Sebastian Skube, had quite an easy task in their qualification against the Czech JYSK Arena, Silkeborg team Talent M.A.T. For their return to the EHF Cup after a two years absence, Saint Raphael nearly did not make it to the quarter-finals. They snapped their ticket thanks to a better general goal difference to Ystad.

But it has been a hard and long road. Bjerringbro-Silkeborg appeared to be favourites in Group C and secured their first spot early, thanks to a win in France. But Saint- Raphael had to wait until the last minutes of their last game in Minsk to let their joy explode. Before that, they had lost twice against Silkeborg, but also managed to wasted a ten goals advantage at home against Pfadi Winterthur, in a game that finally ended in a draw what meant that a victory in Belarus was compulsory to make it to the next round.

But Saint-Raphael, whose coach had never tasted any European Cup before, managed to come back from Minsk with a two-goals win, eventually qualifying.

To make it through, they mainly relied on their attack, which remains one of the Playing hall strongest points. Raphael Caucheteux, Adrien Dipanda and Aurélien Abily all managed Palais des Sports JF Krakowski to score more than thirty goals in the group phase, hiding the fact that left-back and Rue des Chataigniers usual massive goal-provider Alexandru Simicu was injured. 83700 Saint Raphael France Saint-Raphael still will have to tighten their defence, though, as they conceded more Capacity: 2,000 than thirty goals in half the group phase game, and that Chambery can exploit any opportunity you give them. 24 1st ranked Group D CHAMBERY SAVOIE HANDBALL (FRA)

Chambery are the only team to have finished the group phase undefeated. If you could argue their opponents were not the toughest you could find, they still managed to remain serious until the end, getting their quarter finals ticket two games before the end of the phase.

After beating title holders Füchse Berlin in the third qualification round, Chambery faced Ystad in their first group game and deserved a large home win. For the second game the French struggled against Bucuresti, coming back from Romania with a lucky draw. In fact, the Romanians were the only team against which Chambery did not win, both games ended in a draw. But that did not really matter since both Helvetia Anaitasuna and Ystad could not snatch a point against them.

Timothey N’Guessan was the best scorer of the team, with 37 goals, while , at only 19, is one of the best surprises of the competition so far. Able to play both on the centre back and the right back position, Jackson’s son proved to be one of the key asset in his team, and his talent will surely be needed in the national Playing hall clash against Saint Raphaël. Le Phare 800 avenue du Grand Arietaz But not only was the attack impressive, but the defence as well. 27 Frisch Auf Göppingen vs SC Magdeburg

First leg Saturday 23 April, 19:30 hrs. local time

Second leg Wednesday 27 April,19:00 hrs. local time

There is a lot of history between both sides, when Frisch Auf finals is eager to step into those footprints. Göppingen and SC Magdeburg clash in the quarter-finals of the Men’s EHF Cup twice within four days. “We would have liked to face an international opponent, but a draw is no wishing well. So we have to grab our chances in this Both clubs won the old format of the competition several constellation,” said Frisch Auf manager Gerd Hofele after the times, both sides are eager to continue the story of German draw, adding: “All other potential opponents would not have success in the EHF Cup – but only one will make it to Nantes. been easier. Our chances to proceed are 50:50.”

Frisch Auf Göppingen (GER) vs SC Magdeburg (GER) Magdeburg’s young coach Bennet Wiegert – as a player part of Saturday 23 April, 19:30 hrs local time the last SCM EHF Cup triumph in 2007 – has a different view: “Göppingen are the toughest of all opponents we could get. Neither Göppingen nor Magdeburg wanted to have an All- The only little advantage for us it hopefully the fact that we German duel in this stage of the EHF Cup, as the goal of both have the second match at home.” was to make it to the EHF Cup Finals at Nantes. Both sides fully agree that “there are definitely no secrets Göppingen, home team of the first leg, bid for hosting the EHF among those two clubs, as we faced each other so often”. For Magdeburg, history repeats itself even more, as in 2013 And as the EHF Cup is the last chance for Göppingen to hope they were also winners of their group (like now), but had to for a title (and an international experience for next season), face another German team in the quarter-finals. After a three year absence from European Cup competitions, the 2011 and 2012 winner of the “old” EHF Cup qualified again for an international competition. The qualification stage with matches against Polish side Gornik Zabrze was anything but a high hurdle for Frisch Auf Göppingen, as they won both duels by an overall goal difference of +19. At that stage, Göppingen had hoped for hosting the EHF Cup Finals, but failed with their bid - against their group phase opponent HBC Nantes.

After a surprising opening defeat at Holstebro, Göppingen were awake and mainly unbeatable on home ground. Winning all three matches at EWS-Arena including the close 27:26 against later-on group winners Nantes, the team of Swedish born head coach Magnus Andersson paved the way to the quarter-finals. After winning the direct encounter against Holstebro by a clear 36:23 the gate was open, but Göppingen needed to wait until the away win at OCI Lions in the final round until the berth for the next stage was clinched.

Not only thanks to their 40:20 against the Dutch champions on home ground - the clearest win in all group matches, Göppingen finally had the best attack of all 16 teams (198 goals) and the best goal difference (+37) of all contenders. But funny enough not Playing hall their internationally experienced top stars such as German World Champion Michael EWS Arena Göppingen Kraus or Serbian EURO 2012 silver medallist Zarko Sesum were their top scorers in the Nördlichen Ringstrasse 87 EHF Cup so far, but the young guns Marcel Schiller (42) and Andreas Berg (36), both 73033 Göppingen left wings and counter attack experts. 31 1st ranked Group A SC MAGDEBURG (GER) Three times (199, 2001 and 2007) SC Magdeburg have won the „old format“ of the EHF Cup, but never, the 2002 Champions League winner qualified for the EHF Cup Finals. At Magdeburg they hope that history will not repeat, as the constellation in 2013 was the same as it is now: SCM became group winner, then had an All-German quarter-final on their way to Nantes, but failed against Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

The way to finally top hammer group C was quite winding: Despite an easy qualification - clear aggregate winner against Hungarian side Csurgoi KK - coach Geir Sveinsson (now coach of the Icelandic national team) was sacked and youth coordinator and former player Bennet Wiegert appointed as new coach. The start in the group stages was highly successful with three straight wins - but then the motor stuck: Magdeburg lost the away matches at Granollers and Aalborg but finally overran Bucuresti by 39:22 to qualify for the quarter-finals. When Granollers tied against Aalborg, SCM even were confirmed winner of this group.

The eleven times German champions (10 times GDR, 2001 GER) are out of the race for the next European Cup season in the Bundesliga, currently ranked only tenth, but in the German Cup the future for last year’s finalist looks bright as they have an easy semi ahead (against Bergischer HC, three days after the second EHF Cup leg against Playing hall Göppingen) and hope to make it to another final. Magdeburg’s “usual” top scorer in GETEC-Arena - Bördelandhalle the EHF Cup is Austrian wing player Robert Weber, who netted in 50 times so far to Berliner Chaussee 32 be ahead by one goal of Danish newcomer Nielsen (49). During the 39114 Magdeburg EURO, young and tall newcomer rose like phoenix to become the boss of Germany the German defence, when they took gold in Poland. Capacity: 7,800 GROUP A Final Table:
