By Jean Burtin THE SUMMARY IN BRIEF. ound is a 360-degree experience and whether we are attending a Sconcert hall or a motion picture theatre, the full emotional impact of the presentation is the result of a wide variety of sonic vibrations that arrive from every direction. We are now entering the Third Age of reproduced sound. The monophonic era was the first, which lasted from Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877 until the 1950s. During that time the goal was simply to reproduce the timbre of the original sound. No attempts were made to reproduce directional properties or spatial realism. Based on inventions from the 1930s, reaching the public in the mid ‘50s, the stereo era was the Second Age. This stereo sound added two dimensions of Jean Burtin space and has provided great listening pleasure for four decades. Edison and the Lumière brothers worked assiduously to find a way to preserve and reproduce sound and images. The numerous inventions conceived in this period such as the Kinetophone, the Vitascope and the Cinematograph are testament to this and are nowadays consid- ered the forerunners of cinema. Most of these new technologies were presented at public screenings which generated a high level of interest. They attracted people from all social classes, who packed out the halls, theatres and hotels where they were held. This paper presents a review of the newspa- per and magazine articles published in Spain at the turn of the century in order to study the social reception of the first film equip- ment in the country, as well as to understand the role of music in relation to the images at these events and how the first film systems dealt with sound. The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

According to historian Daniel Boorstin, we demand the mass media’s simulated realities because they fulfill our insatiable desire for glamour and excitement. To cultural commentator Richard Schickel, they create an “illusion of intimacy,” a sense of security and connection in a society of strangers. Ian Mitroff and Warren Bennis have gone as far as to claim that Americans are living in a self-induced state of unreality. “We are now so close to creating electronic images of any existing or imaginary person, place, or thing . so that a viewer cannot tell whether ...theimagesare real or not,” they wrote in 1989. At the root of this passion for images, they claim, is a desire for stability and control: “If men cannot control the realities with which they are faced, then they will invent unrealities over which they can maintain control.” In other words, according to these authors, we seek and create aural and visual illusions—television, movies, recorded music, computers—because they compensate for the inadequacies of contemporary society. -

A Brush With the Air Force 42 AIR FORCE Magazine / July 2007 prototype for Corkin was Air Force Col. Milton Caniff was out front with “Terry and Philip Cochran, a noted World War II pilot and leader of air commandos in the Pirates,” but other cartoonists also found Burma. (See “The All-American Air- their calling in the wild blue yonder. man,” March 2000, p. 52.) He became a continuing character in “Terry.” In a famous “Terry and the Pirates” Sunday page from 1943, Corkin opened with, “Let’s take a walk, Terry,” and then delivered an inspirational talk about A Brush With the war and the Air Force as he and the newly fledged pilot Terry strolled around the flight line. The page was “read” into the Congressional Record and reported in the newspapers. Terry, Flip, and their colleagues had a great following among airmen, and the Air Force By John T. Correll the strip had considerable morale and public relations value. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Forces, assigned an officer to as- sist Caniff with any technical details he needed. Caniff produced another strip, “Male Call,” without charge for camp and base newspapers. It featured Miss Lace, who was reminiscent of the Dragon Lady but less standoffish. It is difficult today to comprehend what a big deal the funnies used to be. Everybody read the comic strips. Characters were as well known as movie stars. The strips were printed much larger than present comic strips are. On Sunday, a popular strip might get a whole color page to itself.
