History of the Crusades. Episode 298. The Baltic Crusades. The Lithuanian Conflict Part III. Trying Times. Hello again. Last week we saw Samogitia rise up in rebellion, which in turn aroused suspicions in the Grand Master as to Vytautas' involvement in Samogitian affairs. The Grand Master of the Teutonic Order ended up invading Lithuania, with the aim of ousting Vytautas and placing the Order's new ally, one of Jogaila's younger brothers, into the position of Grand Duke of Lithuania. However, while the two-pronged Teutonic raid into Lithuania netted the Order a bunch of prisoners and caused a great deal of damage, it didn't end up defeating Vytautas, who left Lithuania to deal some devastating blows to Teutonic possessions in Samogitia and Livonia. By the end of last week's episode, both sides had had enough of the destructive conflict, and had met to thrash out a peace agreement. The attempts to broker a peace deal which both sides could accept continued on and off until a breakthrough occurred in May of the year 1404. Interestingly, these peace talks didn't involve Vytautas, who was off campaigning in the Russian Principalities, but the two principal attendees - Grand Master Konrad von Jungingen and the King of Poland Jogaila - managed to come up with an arrangement which involved all three parties, the Grand Master, Jogaila, and Vytautas, reaffirming the Treaty of Sallinwerder, and it also involved the Grand Master agreeing to renounce the Teutonic Order's claim on the strategically important town of Dobrin. Jogaila in particular, was pleased with the Dobrin part of the agreement, and he managed to convince a reluctant Vytautas to agree to the terms of the agreement, which he signed at Ritterswerder in August of 1404.

  • Memories of Statehood in the Defter-I Genghis-Name
570 GOLDEN HORDE REVIEW. 2016. Vol. 4, no. 3 ( 94 MEMORIES OF STATEHOOD IN THE DEFTER-I GENGHIS-NAME Maria Ivanics University of Szeged Szeged 6722, Hungary E-mail: [email protected] The Turkic peoples of the Volga Region lost their statehood for centuries due to the Russian occupation of the Khanate of Kazan and Astrakhan in the mid–16 th century. The memory of statehood among these peoples has been maintained and preserved for posterity through the oral historiography of the steppe. It comes as no surprise then that there has been an effort to create and strengthen the national identities in the post-Soviet Turkic re- publics with the successive publication of the latest editions of national epics and collec- tions of historical stories. Research objectives and materials: This investigation focuses on one such source that forms part of the oral historiography of the steppe, a Genghis-name compiled and re- corded by an unknown author in the late 17 th century. The chapter on Genghis Khan con- tains two stories that depict the various forms of organisational practices in nomadic states. The first was characteristic of the Golden Horde and the Nogai Horde at its zenith; it con- cerns the joint rule of the khan and the beglerbeg. The second depicts relations in the late Golden Horde and its successor states, in which the khan and the four chieftains constituted and led the country together. In the Genghis-name we could set the type of a super complex chiefdom headed by Temir Kutlu Khan with his four kara @ı biy ’s of the clans Kiyat, Kongrat, Cathay, Saldzhut.

Mirgaleev Sh.Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences Kazan 420014, Russian Federation E-mail: [email protected] The article is devoted to Bek Bulat – one of the characters in the Golden Horde history of the end of the 14 th century and one of the first traitors during the confrontation between khan Tokhtamysh and Aksak Timur. During this period, the Golden Horde again faced political instability. Bek Bulat was the first and foremost among the contenders to the cen- tral power. His figure is interesting because at the beginning of his career, he was one of Toktamysh’s military commanders and his relative, but later he betrayed his suzerain. His story helps us to understand Edigu and his supporters. For if Bek Bulat would not be de- stroyed in 1392, possibly it would have been he who would have become the arbiter of fate in the early 15 th century. Tensions between Tokhtamysh’s supporters and opponents were profound. Tokh- tamysh proclaimed the revival of the Golden Horde of the times of khans Uzbek and Janibek, but his adversaries opposed Tokhtamysh’s policy aimed at centralizing power. They wished to maintain influence of clans in order to prevent beklyaribek and vizier’s power to become declarative. To accomplish their goals Tokhtamysh’s adversaries tried to use his confrontation with Timur and came into contact with the latter.

Т. 11 Пространства на паметта DOWNFALL OF THE TWO EMPIRES – TATARS AND BULGARIANS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY Dr. Aleksandar Uzelac (Institute of History, Belgrade) Keywords: The Golden Horde, Despotate of Dobrudja, ‘Demetrius princeps Tar- tarorum’, Aktau Tatars, Prut-Dniester interfluve. The second half of the fourteenth century was marked by decline of the two empires – the Golden Horde and the Second Bulgarian empire. The two states had exactly a century long, turbulent history of their mutual relations before the death of Özbeg (1313 – 1341), khan of the Golden Hordе. His demise marked the end of an era of Tatar political and military influence in the Balkans, sometimes called the ‘Tatar hegemony’1.

The Beginnings Beginnings to AD 2000: A Comprehensive Chronology of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Iran by Iraj Bashiri copyright 2001 The Beginnings Ancient beliefs in the region divide humanity's passage on earth into three cosmic, myhtic, and historical periods. Of the three, of course, only the third or the historical period is real. The other two have cosmological and mytheological values that enhance our understanding of the present-day peoples of the region. One day elemnets of the mythic period might prove to be real but for that we need more solid documentation than is available at the present. For the purposes of this comprehensive chronology of the region, the cosmic and mythic periods are presented in the sequential order preserved in ancient chronologies. No attempt is made at correlating those eras in any form with historical or real time. The Cosmic and Mythic Eras The initial 3000-year battle between the forces of Ahura Mazda (Good) and Angra Mainyu (Evil) leads to the defeat of the latter. The second cycle of 3000 years begins with Ahura Mazda's creation of the cosmic world, i.e., the creation of the sky, water, earth, plants, the sacred white bull, and the cosmic man (Gayomart). Truth, symbolized as fire, permeates Ahura Mazda's kingdom. file:///Volumes/BASHIRISCOM/CHRON/CosMyth.html (1 of 6)10/2/08 1:00 PM The Beginnings Creation continues with Ahura Mazda's creation of the Amesha Spentas or Holy Immortals. Vol. 5, no. 2 УДК 94(47).031 DOI: 10.22378/2313-6197.2017-5-2.344-351 SUCCESSION TO THE THRONE IN THE GOLDEN HORDE: REPLACEMENT OF THE BATUIDS BY THE TUQAI-TIMURIDS I.M. Mirgaleev Sh. Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences Kazan, Russian Federation [email protected] Research objectives: To find out both the principle of succession to the throne in the Golden Horde after the extinction of Batuid family – the ruling dynasty line of the Jochids – and the reasons for the rise of the Tuqai-Timurids. Research materials: In his analysis, the author is based on the genealogical sources and compares them with the Arab-Persian historical works and chronicles. Results and novelty of the research: After the death of Berdibek, the principle of succession in the Golden Horde was disrupted since the Batuid family ceased to exist. The remaining Jochid families had to decide whose line will have had the right to sovereignty. The Time of Troubles of the 1360–70s ended with a Tuqai-Timurid Tokhtamysh’s victory. Replacement of the Batuids by the Tuqai-Timurids was in effect only during the reign of khan Tokhtamysh and therefore it can not be regarded as definitive and generally accepted solution to the problem. In addition to the Tuqai-Timurids, also representatives of the Shibanids will have become khans in the Turko-Tatar yurts in the future. It was precisely the process of disintegration of the Golden Horde and the unsolved problem of succession that led to the fact that hereinafter “any” Jochid could lay claim to the throne in post- Golden Horde yurts.

After a routine meeting with Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and prominent legislators of the Sejm, all eyes turned to Putin to see how he would ease some of the political and historical tensions that have plagued relations between the two nations since the Second World War. First on the agenda were wreath-laying ceremonies in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and, perhaps not surprisingly, the War Monument of the Russian soldiers who were killed during the liberation of the city. Before departing back to Moscow, Putin made a last-minute but meaningful stop at the memorial of Poland’s Home Army, which during Soviet times, was denounced as a criminal organization. Emotions were kept to a minimum, and Poles expecting a Willy Brandt-like genuflection were sorely disappointed when Putin refused to visit the monument for the Warsaw Uprising, which was crushed ruthlessly by Hitler’s Wehrmacht as Soviet troops stood by on the eastern bank of the Vistula river, perhaps deliberately. Analyzing Russian sources, the author tries to answer the question regarding to what extent we can trust the reliability of their information about the impact of Uzbek’s religious affiliation on the anticipated change in his relations with the Russian principalities. Research materials: Russian sources are of paramount importance for the study of the Golden Horde’s history. On the one hand, Russian chronicles contain a wealth of relevant factual material. The abundance of this material can be explained by the fact that medieval Rus’ was subordinated to the Golden Horde, although its numerous and disjointed princes enjoyed considerable autonomy within the Jochid Empire. On the other hand, the accuracy of Russian chronicles’ information should not be overestimated for several reasons. The preserved chronicle collections were often composed several centuries after the described events. Therefore, their information underwent the influence of significant ideological changes. In addition, the authors of Russian chronicles focused on the description of only those events that were directly related to the Russian principalities and their rulers.
