British Actor Julian Sands Is Frequently Seen World- Wide in Films, on Stage, and on Television
British actor Julian Sands is frequently seen world- wide in films, on stage, and on television. He trained in London at The Central School of Speech and Drama and has appeared in over 100 films including; The Killing Fields, A Room With A View, Impromptu, Leaving Las Vegas, Arachnophobia, Oceans 13, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. On television, he is best known for his role on 24 but has also been seen on Dexter, Smallville, Ghost Whisperer and Banshee. In 2005, Julian Sands was approached by the Nobel Prize winning playwright and poet Harold Pinter, to prepare a selection of his poems for a special presentation in London. Pinter “apprenticed” Mr. Sands, spending hours sharing his feelings on how his work should be delivered. Every pause, every nuance in tone, had, and has meaning. A bond was established between these two artists- one that gives a distinctive and very personal voice to Pinter’s words. This extraordinary collaboration became the foundation for a wonderfully rich, humorous, and fascinating solo show directed by John Malkovich- A Celebration of Harold Pinter. Performances at the Edinburgh Festival in 2011 and in New York at The Irish Repertory Theatre were followed by engagements at Steppenwolf in Chicago, Herbst Theatre in San Francisco as well as in Los Angeles, Mexico City, Budapest, London, and Paris. This is an evening of Homeric theater with an extraordinary actor, great words, and an audience. Devoid of pretension or glittery trappings, A Celebration of Harold Pinter gets to the soul of the man- poet, playwright, husband, political activist, Nobel winner, mortal. -

Gillespie Peart Warren 1 A message from the 3 Festival’s Chairman 2010 As we approach Festival number 30 - one of the best 2011 things we can look forward to is getting to see a lot of faces who have been around for at least 20 or more years, who, like me, are beginning to show that it isn’t just films that age. 2012 It has been a hard task to find new guests but we managed it again this year – in fact we have some real quality guests in both the acting profession and the 2013 behind-the-screen work. When I, Tony, Harry and Dave Trengove started this event we were thinking it might continue for about 5 2014 years - not 30! So I would like to say that the success of the event, has been firmly in the hands of those mentioned and several other persons (some unfortunately no longer with us). -

Since they didn’t have access to a plotter, plans had to be printed on A4 paper and stuck together, in a circle. The small details of the gate had to Tweet be drawn up from scratch, using photos and video footage. The skeleton of the gate is made up of 18 X-shaped pieces, and the spinning part is made from small planks. 89 The intricate stargate symbols had to be painstakingly carved, from wood, and chevrons first had to be carved from Styrofoam. The back of the stargate, though painted in gray, is totally fake, but the front looks realistic enough, with chevrons locking and everything. Thanks to an inner track, it even spins. Mango wasn’t too satisfied with the paint-job, but all in all this is a geeky masterpiece, just like the Stargate Share home-cinema . Be sure to check the video Mango made, at the bottom of the post. .. Cast Bios David Carradine
‘SON OF THE DRAGON’ CAST BIOS DAVID CARRADINE (Bird) – In a professional career spanning 45 years, David Carradine has more than 200 credits as an actor in film, television and stage. He is the man audiences immediately picture in their minds when they hear the words “kung fu.” Carradine has appeared in 118 films, 32 plays, 27 television movies of the week, miniseries and dramatic specials, starred in three series, and made over 35 guest appearances on various series. His second starring role, as Caine in “Kung Fu,” evolved into becoming one of the most iconic roles in the history of television. In addition to the smash hit series that garnered Carradine both Emmy ® and Golden Globe ® nominations, it also introduced many viewers to Asian martial arts and Chinese philosophy. There were also two television movies,”Kung Fu, The Way of the Dragon” and “Kung Fu the Movie.” Carradine resurrected his Caine character with a second series, “Kung Fu, The Legend Continues,” which he also co-produced. He also authored Spirit of Shaolin, a Handbook of Kung Fu Philosophy and voiced “Caine, The Kung Fu Adventure Online.” A member of one of Hollywood’s acting dynasties, Carradine followed his father, John, a star of screen and stage dating back to the golden era of Hollywood, into the family business. Carradine and his well-known brothers represent the second generation and many of their children make up a third generation of established actors. Affirming his status as an acting legend, Carradine has his own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. -

ANNETTE BENING, DAVID ARQUETTE, MIREILLE ENOS, JULIAN SANDS, JOSH STAMBERG AND MERRITT WEVER OPEN THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES Randall Arney Directs the American Premiere of Joanna Murray-Smith’s Comedy at the Geffen Playhouse Annette Bening, who plays the famed feminist in playwright Joanna LOS ANGELES, February 09, 2010 — Murray-Smith’s comedy The Female of the Species, will be sharing the Geffen Playhouse stage with a diverse group of acclaimed actors: David Arquette (Scream, Never Been Kissed), Tony Award nominee Mireille Enos (Big Love, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf on Broadway), Julian Sands (A Room with a View, Boxing Helena), Josh Stamberg (Drop Dead Diva) and Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie). The production is helmed by Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney and opens on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening (Being Julia, American Beauty, The Grifters) returns to the Geffen Playhouse as Margot Mason – feminist theorist and author of such influential works as “Madame Ovary” and “The Complete Insignificance of Male Sexuality.” Loosely inspired by a real-life incident, The Female of the Species begins with Margot at her country home attempting to pen her next masterpiece in the peace and quiet. Problem is, nothing’s coming. Nothing, that is, except for Molly (Merritt Wever), a former student who is intent on taking Margot hostage as punishment for her mixed message ideology. Enter Margot’s overlooked daughter (Mireille Enos), her simplistic son-in-law (David Arquette), her longtime publisher (Julian Sands) and a disgruntled cab driver (Josh Stamberg) ... and all of a sudden a simple kidnapping turns into a battle over who can throw the first punch and get the last word. -

“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power. -
Phantasmagoria: Ken Russell's Gothic (1986) As Neo-Victorian Meta
Phantasmagoria: Ken Russell’s Gothic (1986) as Neo-Victorian Meta-Heritage Film Christophe Van Eecke (Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands) Abstract: Ken Russell’s film Gothic (1986) dramatises one of the key foundational myths of nineteenth-century British literature: the night at the Villa Diodati when Mary Shelley allegedly had the initial idea for her novel Frankenstein (1818). While the film can be enjoyed as a costumed horror film, this article argues that it is in fact an intricate response to the heritage film genre and to heritage tourism within the cultural and political context of Britain in the 1980s. Russell’s film subverts heritage film conventions and mobilises early film techniques and forms of entertainment from the late Victorian era to comment upon the recuperation of Victorian culture in the heritage industry of the 1980s. To make clear how the film achieves this, four key aspects are analysed: the parallels between the film’s structure and a funhouse ride; the film’s use of the tableau vivant; the film’s engagement with nineteenth-century celebrity cults; and the film’s representation of heritage tourism. Taken together, these elements introduce a complex reflexivity in the film that allows the attentive viewer to enjoy it on several levels at once, both as a heritage horror film and as a neo-Victorian critique of the cultural forces that seek to revive the Victorian in a contemporary context.
